Why bother with the bag? If the batteries are going to explode in the bag or out of the bag I would not want them indoors anyway. So forget the bag and charge them outdoors. Do not fall for the gimickry.

I agree with Ed that most of the time a Lipo bag is just an added gadget that probably will never be needed. Just charge in areas that if the Lipo catches fire or explodes there will be no damage. The risk will be minimal especially considering that the pack will likely be only charged a couple times per flying season.

Unfortunately people will charge inside their car and house. Just check out some of the earlier posts on this thread.

I checked out some of the sizes for some of the 3 and 4 cell packs. The 1500 mAH and 1600 mAH packs that are 3 and 4 cells will easily fit across from the switch. Many 2200 mAH packs that are 3 and 4 cells may also fit with minor grinding on the plastic feet on the starter.

If you have a Sullivan battery box or similar the pack sizes will have to be considered further. The 3 and 4 cell packs are thicker and probably won't fit. Consider the size when purchasing.

Thanks for all the comments!

ive been using a 4 cell 4000 lipo that i got from hobbyking for about 2months, purchased a 6" x 3"x 2" project box from radio shack. plenty of power i chagered it after about a month..actually serval guy at my local flying field want to use it everytime im there too. it works great. just respect the charging rules and you will be ok. i wish i had a watt meter to see what the average draw is for a certin size engine..

Well I thought I would show you my new lipo starter. I used a zippy 4cell pack 2200mh at 20c it is 4" long and it is 1.25"sq. Man it has alot of torque and high speed!! It has turned over everything we have tried it on even with temps below freezing. I monted it under and to the side so it grips well when you pick it up, I then put an aluminum shield to cover the battery, in case it gets dropped.

Those brackets that hold the starter to the project box look really interesting. Did you make them yourself, or are they something that's commercially available? I think I'm going to follow your lead since my 12v Pb/acid battery pack just doesn't hack it.

actually they are from the sullivan pack i first bought, but they would be easy to make. i think they are 1/32 thick, i wish i new how to do cad stuff and had a laser cutter or something cause i would make a bunch of brackets, i know i could sell 20-30 sets at my local field

btw the project box is $3.50
and the battery was $44 i think, at hobby king 4s 4000 turnigy pack

its starts 26cc zenoahs no problem

Steve:

It just so happens that I DO know how to do CAD stuff and have a access to a laser cutter (see www.mini-imp.com) Any chance that you can take them off, make a paper tracing of them, mail them to me, and I can do a CAD drawing of them for everybody to use. I'll cut a s*** pot load of 'em and make them available. I have a sheet metal brake and a BUNCH of 0.032" 2024 T-3 aluminum laying around the hangar just looking for something useful to do.

PM me.

Gary

Looks great Duane.  I think I will upgrade my 3s 2200 to a 4s.  It should fit right in

Attached is a .pdf and a .dxf file of the CAD drawing that I just made of the Sullivan starter bracket. This forum won't take CAD format files directly so I had to I add a ".txt". extension to the .dxf file (since .dxf is a plain text format). To use it as a .dxf, just rename the file without the ".txt" extension.

I printed a copy of the .pdf and checked it against the bracket that I have and it matches. So...if people want to make their own, they can do so from this, OR, if I can get 20 people who want sets of brackets to make their own battery box like Stevem9's, send me a PM and if I get enough, I'll have my local laser cutter make them up. I can't tell you the cost, but I can't imagine that it would be over $10 + shipping. I'll get a final price before I commit to having them made.

A couple weeks ago I broke in two new engines:

1) The engines were started 18 times (4-cell Lipo pack)
2) After running the lipo battery was charged
3) About 400 mAH was added to the pack to charge the pack to the original charged state

Based upon the above data it took on the average about 23 mAH per start.

If we assume that we get in the range of 50% of the rated capacity before it is time to charge the battery then my 1600 mAH pack should start an engine about 35 times.

35=(1600*.5)/23

I've been useing a 5 cell A123 2300MA for the last 2 years. The 5 cell A123 is about the same voltage as a 4 cell LIPO. My unit draws 3 amps turning a Saito 180. I fly about three times a week on adverge and recharge about every 2 months. The battery has never gone dead an will turn anthing that I have tried to start. The starter unit is a cheap tower unit, nothing special.

No problem, Steve. I found a Sullivan battery pack adapter in a hobby shop while I was traveling and so I bought it. I just made the drawing from that. Hopefully it will be of some use to people.
