With the new requirments of grill propane tanks I now have one that can no longer be filed. Any thoughts or ideas as to convert it to an air tank.

You can buy a conversion kit to do just that, Check with the major hardware stores - they should carry them.

You gave it all away. You should have left it alone and let people figure it out. I really thought it was going in the Chipmunk!!

Isn't it illegal to do this? I know it is illegal to convert an old freon bottle to compressed air. Something to do with ASTME codes or something like that. I could be off base.

No not a paint tank. Just a big air duster for that quick shot of air. I got a small compressor with no tank.

The propqne tanks can be re-certified, the valve is changed, the tank is X-rayed for flaws and thin spots, if it passes the x-ray test then the tank is pressured up to 600PSI, it then sits for 48 hours and if the pressure doesn't drop a new certification number is stamped in the tank. The outside of the tank is sand blasted using glass beads as they don't remove metal - just paint and surface rust. The tank is then painted using epoxy based paints for durability. One of my companies does this, we do about 60 tanks a week.

I was always told it was illegal to do this because the tanks are not coated on the inside and will rust from the inside out. A aux. tank for your compressor is a great idea just go to wally world and get one made for the job. BE SAFE Just my 2 cents worth
