g_mkoch -> Great Planes 25% Pitts M-12s 3D (11/3/2009 5:59 AM)

This is all I know on this plane: http://www.towerhobbies.com/rcwnews/091027-gpma1421.html
Does anyone have any pictures or ETA?

kochj -> RE: Great Planes 25% Pitts M-12s 3D (11/6/2009 6:21 PM)

well if retail is 800$ then I could guess it will be around 450$>???

Wonder if it will have provisions for a can or full length pipe??

50cc pitts

Wingspan: 68.5 in (1740 mm)
Wing Area: 1545 in² (99.7 dm²)
Weight: 19-20 lbs (8.62-9.07 kg)
Wing Loading: 28-30 oz/ft² (85-92 g/dm²)
Length: 80.5 in (2045 mm)
Requires: 7+ channel radio with 8 servos and 50cc gasoline engine.

Ultimate 1.60
SPECS: Wingspan: 65" (1650mm)
Wing Area: 1446 sq in (93m2)
Weight: 12.5-13.5lb (5440-6120g)
Wing Loading: 10-22 oz/sq ft (58-67 g/dm2)
Length: 72" (1830mm)
Airfoil: Symmetrical
While comparing the ultimate to the pits, I can't help but notice the wing loading...
3" of wing added, gives you almost 7lbs added to the airframe???

when compared to the aero-works 50cc pitts, it seem quite heavy...

50cc Pitts Python ARF-QB Quick Build

Top Wing span 70 inches.
Bottom Wing Span 68 inches
Wing Area 1725 sq. in.
Fuselage Length 68.5" (Rudder to front of cowling)
Fuselage length 72" ( Rudder to front of spinner)
Weight 17 to 18 lbs
Engine 50cc Gas
Radio 8 Channels minimum

Now the aeroworks pitts was thought to be heavy, at 20lbs even with ALL that wing area of the AW pitts....
It flew Just fine, but was a bigger plane ....

My guess is that the GP pitts will come in much lighter than the advertised weights.....

cadconversions -> RE: Great Planes 25% Pitts M-12s 3D (11/7/2009 2:53 AM)

Can't wait to hear more info and see some pics. No way it will weigh in at 20lbs. That's crazy - their first cap 580 was heavy but I don't think they will make the same mistake.

nitro wing -> RE: Great Planes 25% Pitts M-12s 3D (11/7/2009 7:43 AM)

Its scary..usually most people cant duplicate the advertised weight and end up over.. [&:]
If they admit to hitting 20 pounds, its going to have a bad hit on sales. Bets, they'll trim that advertised weight to 16.5- 19.5 soon??

kochj -> RE: Great Planes 25% Pitts M-12s 3D (11/7/2009 4:42 PM)

I will have to look at the review of the GP 1.60 size ultimate and see what the weight was on that plane....

With all the newer building tech. of using more plywood and baswood and less balsa, I would think that this one would be
lighter than the older ultimate?....

Glad the link finally went live. Wow, single place canopy and not to bad of a covering scheme. What's everyone's thought so far?

cadconversions -> RE: Great Planes 25% Pitts M-12s 3D (11/14/2009 8:19 AM)

Just watched the video - I believe the weight is up there a little compared to the Extreme Flight stuff - but with that said - I would be very tempted to drop my EF Yak-54 for this plane. Crazy huh? I've just got an itch for 2 winds and round noses.

I thought this was Taildragger21 from KY as well or did you have to make a new account? Pretty good looking plane but will be interested in knowing the real flying weight when they arrive.

Tail Dragger -> RE: Great Planes 25% Pitts M-12s 3D (12/3/2009 8:13 AM)

I'm The Tail Dragger That Used To Fly With You On Realflight (I Think This Is You).Anyways,I'm Thinking That This Is A Pretty Good Looking Plane And I'm Waiting On More Info And Watching The Threads On This Plane.I've Always Liked The Model 12

kochj -> RE: Great Planes 25% Pitts M-12s 3D (1/17/2010 8:34 AM)

I am sure that this one will fly great....

fit it with a BME 58CC or the SOON to be released DA60cc and you have one hell of powerhouse....

Unfortionately, no provisions for a pipe install... WHat a shame....

I may pick up the QQ Beast and see how that fairs with a new DA120cc on pipes....

Can you say "holy hanna! over powered banna!!

Rcpilot -> RE: Great Planes 25% Pitts M-12s 3D (1/17/2010 12:43 PM)

Just watched the video. I didn't see any 3D there. They flew it on the wing the whole time except for 3 seconds of somebody trying a sloppy harrier/hover in the last few moments of the video.

20 pounds with a 50cc engine? That's gonna 3D like a brick with lead ballast in the nose.

I swore off Great Pains after that 1/3 scale Pitts disaster. Never again.

Gotta give them credit for smooth marketing. Make the video all shiny around the edges and people will buy it......... [8|]

No serious 3D pilot would look twice at this garbage.

Wow, quite harsh considering neither you or anyone has gotten a look at the actual plane yet. I can say that my Great Planes 25% Su-31 is the nicest looking ARF I have every seen. Perfect covering, great hardware, excellent quality and reasonably priced. Did you really watch the video? I see lots of solid torque rolls at 45 seconds in and I wouldn't call that harrier at the end sloppy, either. Take a deep breath.

iflywhenican -> RE: Great Planes 25% Pitts M-12s 3D (1/24/2010 7:41 PM)

I have the GP Ultimate 1.60 and really love it. I hope that this plane turns out as good.

Too early to tell that or not...
Great planes has come a LOOOOONG ways since there pitts aircraft.....
(They have discontinued that one quite a long time ago!)[;)]
Many said the same thing about the 1st Gen 1/3rd cap, but mine flew great at 26lbs..
A Far cry from what the mags were saying there’s weighed in as.. (30lbs)
They have given customers what they wanted when they released there Eagle 580
It is a very nice, light flying 2nd GEN Cap 580 1/3....with provisions for cans....

I don't think this is a 20lb plane.... but it is the same weight range and size as the Aero-works 50cc pittsM12
and there plane 3D's fantastic....But has slightly bigger demensions where they count!

What I can say is this.....
There are many,,,,and I mean MANY ARF aircraft manufactures out there.
And ALL of them can make LIGHTWEIGHT, decent flying planes....
What separates most, is the product backing.....
From what I have seen with great planes is this....
They will give you all the product support till your hearts content....
But if there is a REAL design issue, and OR the product isn't selling as much as they hoped, they will
drop that ARF plane like yesterdays stripper pole sweat!!!

They have always came through for me.

kochj -> RE: Great Planes 25% Pitts M-12s 3D (1/27/2010 4:44 AM)

Another thing to note is this:

Cox released a very nice m12, but it had issues with prop wash (not getting there) with
smaller props mainly, the ones used for Electric....
This was fixed by making a space between the cowl and the fuse, so air could pass thought and over the tail feathers...

I wonder if GP took note of this when they built this one????

Electrics are becoming very very BIG TIME...nowadays and IT seems
that in the past, they have been very good about making Every plane built with
this option in mind......

drbyrnes -> RE: Great Planes 25% Pitts M-12s 3D (1/29/2010 10:22 PM)

I really like the Pitts M-12s compared to an Ultimate. But everyone says the Ultimate is the best biplane out there. I've seen the Aeroworks 50 cc Ultimate and it's really sweet, but it comes in at around 17 pounds I think. Therefore, the 20 pound GP Pitts M-12s seems a little heavy. I'll wait until I hear some reviews from you guys about how it flies. Do you think the new DA-60 would do the job in a 20 pound plane?

cadconversions -> RE: Great Planes 25% Pitts M-12s 3D (1/30/2010 6:13 AM)

Just got the e-mail from tower....they are available. If it's a plane closer to 20 lbs (let's hope not) then a DA-60 (or somthing of that size) would be much better.

devens -> RE: Great Planes 25% Pitts M-12s 3D (1/30/2010 6:25 AM)

20 lbs is a tank if that is correct. I read it had a pipe tunnel. We will have to see. It may be discontinued before you see a DA 60 since they haven't hinted at one yet. I really like the looks of it. I am sure there will be one at e-fest I shound bring some string and my fishing scale! I wonder what the show plane has on it....a fuji? lol

I like it and hope it is for real!!

D

cadconversions -> RE: Great Planes 25% Pitts M-12s 3D (1/30/2010 6:49 AM)

The manual recommends the DA-50. You can download it and a new video now. The second video is more 3D but still not just over the top. Starts off with a really long torque roll right at takeoff. Landings look really easy. I like the look of the bipe and not being a 3D jockey the weight doesn't completely scare me but it does EXTREMELY bother me. HaHa
