I watched it - yeah, that is pretty quick! As you know living in Montreal, it is not exactly test flight weather up here right now. Now to wait for spring.

Well.. apart from mounting a fuel filler valve and replacing the prop stud (too short) it is ready to test fly now. I am hoping to hook up with smokinRV4 real soon for a delta session. He's just about finished his next Demon, and I have my original, the .15 version, and the .65 version ready to commit aviation.

It's been stupid long wait to fly it, but sometimes life gets in the way, like new jobs and all that. No excuses, but last year was a bad year for me in terms of model project completion, not to mention filling kit orders and anything else not related to gainful employment (which I can assure you SD kits are not). Terrible in fact. But I'm employed so there's something to be said for 2010.

Now the weather is nice, it's time. Could be this Sunday. I need to test fly it before June for sure, in case I finally make it to an RC speed event or something like that..

Wow, its ready. Very best luck with maiden and smokinrv4 too. Glad to hear problems are behind you mjd. Look foward to your flight report and hopefully some vid too would be great.

What colour is under wing? Your fine pics only show top which looks awesome. Love those winglets.

Dayglo tip stripes, large black inset panels. IOW - dark, and noticably different than the top!

I manufacture the kits, yes. I must confess I have been very distracted for a while and desperately need to put together a run of kits. Feel free to PM me to discuss!

mk1 - weather is spotty at the moment, we have thunderstorm warnings at the moment and the 5day forecast is rain.

I solved the prop stud issue neatly, we have a local fastener supplier who happened to have a 3 foot length of M6x1.0 threaded rod on the shelf for 8 bucks. Ta da! Now I can be the local OPS prop stud pimp.

Fuel filler mounted too. Man, what am I to do? I've run out of excuses! Except the best of all: "I'm skeert to fly it.."

If nothing else I will get the shake-down ground runs done. I'll hold it over a catch pan so all the fasteners won't land in the dirt. The ones I worry about are the ones that head for the intake.. but actually everything in the engine compartment is safetied down - 2-56 nuts holding the IMC backed up by short segments of Nyrod, heat-shrink over the tank neck clamp, that sort of thing. I hate the sound of sucking a loose nut into the disc valve at 23k.

Yeah weather forecast for this weekend looks sketchy. More rain means I'll be cutting more grass down at our flying field when it stops raining, as it stands now I've been cutting twice a week, then my own at home. It could be worse I guess, I could live in Brandon, Manitoba or next to the Mississippi, shouldn't complain.

I ruined a real nice K&B 6.5 by letting a little washer get sucked in. If I had safety wired a pipe screen over the intake.....

When the washer got caught between the piston and liner, it threw a really nice spinner never to be seen again.

Since there is no flying today, it's trivia time - did you know that the duck hold the honour of having the longest [insert RCU banned word that rhymes with Venus here] relative to its body size? Specifically, the Argentine Blue-bill Duck - Argentine Blue-bill duck

Now back to the workshop..

Well, we were talking ducks so I thought I'd throw that in..

So anyhow RV4 if you need a longer prop stud for the .65 I'm all stocked up. With the heavy hub on the speed props, the spinner backplate, etc, the studs on both mine are a little too short.

I'll get that thing running tomorrow and apart from shaking it down, I am very curious how the static thrust will stack up against the airframe weight - still wondering if I should make a launcher or just toss it. I bought a length of Unistrut yesterday, I figure I'll cut it to 8 feet (so it fits better in the car), and rig a delta slinger. Bought some heavy latex tubing too. But if it pulls hard enough, someone can just toss the darn thing. I haven't tried this on a ply mockup yet, but I have been thinking that a way to toss these with a bit more speed is underhand - left hand on the LE a ways to the left of the engine, and the right hand behind the TE center section if you can picture it. Like tossing a plank. Tilt a bit to the right, wind up and heave-ho. At least this way you can follow through, the two handed push is pretty weak.

Well, minor progress last night. The rain stopped for the evening, so I got it out and ran two tanks though.

Run #1 - since I removed the needle valve and am running on an IMC, I could only get the setting rough during installation. So it took a few starts and throttle ups to home in on the IMC setting - esp. since I had the end points set very broadly, touchy touchy. But finally got it, much like setting a very coarse needle valve. After 15-20 seconds it rattled the nut on the carb draw bar loose (I knew something had to loosen, that's why we do shakedown runs!) and went lean so I grabbed the fuel line and killed it right away. Retorqued that, and predictably changed the plug.

Run #2 - much better! New Merlin plug (2003HD), very slightly richened the bottom end, filled it up, and a few quick finger-over-the-end-of-the-pipe "chokes" off she went. The IMC works perfectly, I backed it off a hair rich, warmed up, throttled up, and pinned it. I'm running a 8.25x10 Eliminator D speed prop, and it jumps on the pipe readily from where I can quickly richen back a couple of clicks on the Tx. This implies a can run a bit more prop load for flight - time to break out the 8.2x11 and 8.5x11's. The light was fading so I could not get a tach reading.

It is actually quite responsive to throttle, this is with a Jett .90 carb. Drops instantly into a clean fast idle (no need for tickover with a high pitch toothpick), and spools up very quickly into a smoky 2c. And it even runs nicely at mid-throttle settings available, so I can back off and catch my breath.

Running an extra head shim, 15% Omega plus 5oz castor for ~23% total oil. It's hard not to hold a delta without the exhaust firing straight into your stomach, hence the uproar when my wife started yelling from the laundry room in the dungeon: "**** is this stinky glop all over your jeans and jacket and...??!!". So I just called down and said quit yer gripin' and take the Shout to it, pulled up the ladder, slammed the trapdoor shut and latched it. I'll pop home this morning and let her out for a bathroom break and some porridge. (you're right, she doesn't read my RCU posts.. but really, that's how it is..).

The prop is very carefully balanced, and it has a decent Al spinner - but there is only so much vibration damping from these airframes and it's a big single, so it is not perfectly smooth at all rpms, but within reason I think.

I was curious about static thrust - it is definitely > 1:1, but not by a huge amount. Wet weight is around 5 pounds. To be expected with a small high pitch prop. I think it will be fine with a good heave-ho. There's more vertical pull than with .50's and clipped pylon props, and those launch okay, but also with lighter airframes.

Now I just have to carve the cooling inlet in the cowl and refit that - a few minute's work in the evening.

And the weather is starting to clear up. I am definitely out of excuses.. yikes

p.s. this thing is freakin' LOUD

Who's the crazy idiot thats going to launch it for you? There's probably not too many who would stand behind a full throttled OPS 65, pretty intimidating i would imagine.

I have a particular idiot in mind with a bit of experience launching these things and has a .65 of his own.

So start psyching up dude. I'd go out back of the house with a ballasted ply mockup and start trying to toss it upright onto the roof.

A raincoat and earplugs are mandatory to block the oil spray and the racket.

So the plywood mockup is about 2X the weight of the actual...
Good luck with the maiden, can't wait to hear the flight reports.

Good luck with it Mike, be careful with the launch. My 77 is ready to go again after spending the afternoon today taking everything apart to fix a stripped servo. It was -3 last night but is supposed to warm up the next few days. Have fun,

Tom
