Looking great mike.!!

Keep an eye on the weston silcone exhaust joiner. Dont know if you will lock the tuned pipe from moving back and detuning the pipe by it sliding within the joiner with your big block power house.

Notice that some of the Speed Cup planes have big, honkin' automotive hose clamps. I've always felt that an aluminum collar could be slip fit over the pipe and welded, stationed far enough back on the pipe to clear the coupler. The purpose of the collar would be to provide a tie down point for a lenth of music wire. The wire wraps around the cylinder and each end of the wire is threaded through holes in the collar, then folded back.

That little coupler is just there for me to take pictures and go "vroom" with it for now. I have a big thick chunk of blue Sullivan or something coupler that is better for this. And it will get well clamped. The pipe will get a more robust standoff than my last effort too. I had consired pop-riveting a bracket to the pipe..

No prob, & I'll take a look. I was holding the Demon with the engine and pipe loosely fitted just 30 minutes ago, and I was actually thinking about the manufacturer's claim of 3.85hp and wondering what it would be like launching it, esp. solo. I agree on the winter flying issue, I fly my electrics out back my house sometimes though during the winter, because there isn't the same amount of fuss.

Moment of truth...!

Here it is. 3.95 pounds, all the major bits are in there. Down to details.. servo install, prime and paint, cowling, etc. I am quite satisified with the airframe - on the ground so far that is - and am looking forward to this! The mixture control valves are on the way from Conley (the Perry guy) as of yesterday, so other than spare props things are converging on a date not too far down the road it seems.

The fuel system ends up being tight and compact, no long lines here. The tank does not have its bladder fitted yet.

Today is clear blue, calm, very cool, an absoluie stunner. Maybe there will be another.

MJD, nice covering job! This model should be clean as a whistle when you're done. The camera angles make the engine look proportional to the size of the plane.

It still looks more ridiculous in person. But when I heft the model, it feels fine. I am sure the prop isn't the static thrust king of the hill, but it won't be doing nothing either. So with luck launches will be okay.

I just figured how to mount the pipe easily and adjustably, I'll do the same thing I did on the test stand but light - the bulkheads fore and aft of the servo compartment area fall nicely to either side of the fat part of the pipe, so standoffs go there, and an aluminum runner for the pipe to rest upon with a clamp. Or something like that anyways.

I can see it being ready to test fly later next week. Forgot to order spare props ahead of time, must do that.. one bad launch or landing.. doh!

Just making templates for cutting glass, and setting up to lay up the first cowl.

Mike, that thing looks sweet! I been stalled on my version for awhile waiting for parts to get here. It looks like you did a lot to strengthen the airframe, mine is pretty much stock other than adding the extra spar in front of the tank. Should I sheet the open bays or will they be ok as stock? I have some very light balsa sheet back home that i could use and it would hardly add any weight. I'm covering it in monokote.

I have one of the perry remote mixture valves, same as you ordered. I'm hoping I won't need a separate needle because room is really tight. I barely have room for the extra servo.

Too bad i won't likely be around for your flights, would be fun to watch..

Hi Tom,

Once I get through the flurry of completing this, I'll spend some time drawing the mods up properly. If you are going to use film, I would say for the few piddly grams, yeah sheet the thing up. Look at the weight of mine, and I paid only passing attention to weight saving as I went. If you don't sheet, I would at least add an internal web in the rear of the LE sheeting to close the box, and to add some support for the sheeting. It does add add torsional stiffness.

Another needle is not required, the IMC functions as the main metering device apparently.

Maybe one day we'll have three big block Demons iat the field at once, if TokinRVman pulls through with his Webra .80.
