Did you know that the line from the gas tank to the engine AND the line from the tank to the muffler need to be connected before you fly? Here’s my story:

Perfect day in Minnesota – I snuck out of the office without telling anyone. Temp 45 degrees (above zero), slightly overcast but sunny enough to light up the plane in the sky, wind less than 8 mph, no one at the field but me (that never happens). First flight went fine. Second flight – whoops forgot to connect the line to the muffler and guess what happened, engine died immediately after take off.

This is what I learned:

1. Connect both lines.
2. Corn stalks are not your friend

The bottom of the wing was shredded, but no structural/wood damage at all – I’ll be back flying by Thursday.

this is my first season flying - does this one count as a crash or is it an "incident"?

Any crash you can fix with nothing more than some new skin is an "incident".

A year ago I would have said you're right, 100%, without question. Since then I've bought an OS160 twin cylinder... which is effectively a pair of OS 90 4 strokes bolted to a common crank (yes I know 2x90=180 - I guess it's a shorter stroke on the twin's crank or something). This engine just came with a pair of exhaust headers, and no mufflers (and therefore no place for a pressure line!). I worried over this for quite a while, considered buying a pair of exhausts & mufflers, or a fuel pump etc etc but it turns out that the twins have a fairly narrow carb throat for the size of the engine and that provides enough suction to not need a pressure line! It took me quite a few flights on my (now chronically over-powered) GP Super Skybolt before I was willing to do laps of the field with the plane inverted, but it's never quit on me, even after a minute or two of inverted flight followed by an outside half-loop to pull out. It doesn't even need mufflers for noise - it's actually quieter than my ASP 120 4 stroke with muffler, and what a beautiful noise the twin makes.

Glad your plane's an easy fix - and it sounds like you've learned a cheap lesson about pre-flight checks.

Plane is ready to go and I plan on flying tomorrow. btw, I'll be building a warbird with an inverted engine over the winter. Am I taking a risk on the engine shutting down if it's been installed inverted (88" spitfire, planning on a moki 1.8 glow)?

I have run several two strokes inverted without issues. However, they are much easier to flood and I would recommend on board glow for a more reliable idle.
