When I learned to fly I started with a nice shiney LT-40. It was sooooo nice. One day after I had soloed I took off and it veered to the left toward the trees. I over corrected and paniced. After a few loops it smashed nose first into the runway full throttle with an OS 46FX. The fuse was demolished. Next came the Dura-Plane trainer. Squirrely but it flew OK. After a few cartwheel landings there was epoxy all over the wing. While I was learning to fly I bought an Easy Sport 40 stick kit. I've always loved to build things but I had no clue how to build an airplane. It took about a month building a little here and there. The worst part was constantly CAing my fingers to the balsa. You would think I'd learn after awhile. Then I found the SPAD page, spring of 99 I think. I decided to build six GPS Zeroes for a combat demo at our fun-fly. The completed airframes were given out and four guys finished them in time for the demo. Then I built a Dominator. If a woman can download instructions and figure it out you guys have no excuse.
As for the newbies and balsa or plastic it's up to them. The only difference is the ground bouncing factor. The LT-40 is a floater, the Dura-plane cheap and a little squirrely and the Debonair flies just as well as the LT-40 but it's plastic. I think the Deb could be put together faster than the LT-40 ARF and is definately easier to fix.
SPAD people admire the beautiful balsa planes but some just don't have the patience, time or money for that. I have other hobbies and lately just don't have time for any lenghty building projects. Tattoo and I have about 15 or 20 ready to fly airplanes so I haven't built anything for awhile. We have been all over the country flying and there has never been anyone at any field that put down a SPAD to our face. It's too easy on the internet for folks to stir the pot just to irritate. Meet that person at the field and it's a whole different story. They have all been a great bunch of R/C folks.

I swore i would NEVER get in to another debate about SPAD(especialy here on RCU where the Balsa Nazi's hang out)

But as usual i have something to say.
First i live in Australia where there is:
no list of suppliers,
no 21/2 gutter pipe,
no 2 or 4mm coro,
in fact very little SPAD anything thats similar to the USA YET i built and learnt to fly on a DEB about 18 odd months ago, my first instructor told me how bad it would fly and why dont i go and buy a nice ARF trainer...... so i found another instructor.

NO one can tell me how hard it is to build and learn on a SPAD because i know from experiance thats BS, if i can find all the material, scratch build from the plans and fly all within about 9 weeks any one can.

even now 18 months later my planes are still uglly on the ground but they fly as good (and sometimes better) than the high$$$ balsa versions at the field and when there both 100' in the air you cant pick the balsa from the SPAD.
Not only that there so cheap i give them away if some one wants one

Soooo call me a SPAD evangelist i dont give a rats, as long as i can build and fly within my budget.
(wave hands in air)
Sooo bothers and sisters get down on your knees and pray.
The SPADvangelist is coming to town Alelujh. send all your donations to 1800 SPADINCONGRES and help save the rare endangered balsa tree from the anti-SPAD balsa hethans

So many people coming together as one... it brings a tear to the eye. Maybe SPAD can save the world from evil Balsa builders... Anyone like some Kool-Aide?

Nitro-Woman and Sassy; you go girls... you've got me convinced, if Oprah flew planes, she'd SPAD... talk to the hand. :

"I'll **** thee, So that thou'lt remember me, Ne'er will I surrender!"

Look who’s back! The incredible self inflating Mr. Jim.

Jimbo, the term is "Talk to the hand ,cause the face ain't listening". For you this statement is most appropriate.

Kool-aide might work for some, but for you, not using the words “I”, or “Self” in conversation would be just as effective.

That's it. It's easy for someone to fling insults at you when he doesn't have to look you in the eye. That's what the internet has proven so effective at, allowing all the closet jerks to "come out" so to speak. I'll bet 90% of them are sweethearts in person...

You're right, 90% would act nice in person.
It's calld "two-faced". And the word "act" is used intentionally.

It's like a tough guy act. It's usually exactly that. An act.

Here's an idea: Everyone just ignore Jim entirely, he is feeding off the tension he creates by his posts. If you don't give him more material to use he won't be able to play.........imagine that!

Because this thread has degraded into lobbing stones at one another and doesn't seem to offer any legitimate spad info I request it get shut down Mr. Moderator. I started the thread and I am now tired of the direction it is heading into..........

My last word on the subject: Spads are gaining popularity for some obvious reasons. Those who still snub their nose at new designs and building techniques are missing out on a new and exciting part of the hobby....THEIR LOSS! Their negative comments will only spur the Spadders to create more amazing Simple Plastic Airplane Designs...... Let's move on.

Where is that cat Dean?

Don't get it?
Go back and read... ok, now go back and read ... the whole thread .... with comprehension.
I am not anti-SPAD, I'm "anti-SPAD as the cure all to non-existant balsa-blues".

Jim aka. "closet jerk with no life". :

ps. The one point I can agree with is that the online experience is different than that at the field. My comments in both places are the same but at the field they are taken for the good natured ribbing they are meant.... unlike the walking on eggshells environment around here... don't criticise SPAD even in jest, that's unholy. :

You pegged it Nukes.

Different behavior in public than in "the closet" is living a lie.
You'd be surprised how many people live such lies. It is to their own detriment.

This kind of lies and cowardice go hand in hand.

"need their own field" Good idea, only then you wouldn't get to see the looks on their faces after the crash. (hehe)

I hate to see any plane destroyed, nice ones or a piece of flying junk, but sometimes you can't help feeling sorry for the plane and not the pilot. It seems arrogant people the world over suffer from some internal lack, maybe insecurity or lack of self confidence/self esteem caused by something during childhood. The arrogance is just an effect from some other deep seated cause. It's just an act. The superiority exists only in their mind.

Kurt Tank

You're right, time to move on. It's starting to bring out the worst in a few of us. Wouldn't want too many who live the lies mentioned above to be flushed out of the closet and exposed.
