Hi,
At last perfect weather to have first flight after getting motor to run (thanks Baracuda) the heli seemed to work hard to lift off with training gear on and then when in the air spun in a circle untrolable. I have a 401 Gyro with head holding so not sure why this happened, if anyone has any ideas i would apreciate it. Also after 5 mins the motor was red hot. On the bright side i have had my first flight without a crash.
Stay safe

Your gyro needs to be reversed. Use that little tool they gave with the gyro to change it. Essentially what its doing now is trying to correct drift by turning the same direction as the drift, then trying to correct more since now its spinning not just drifting. This cycle keeps on going until it can't add any more rudder and its just in one big spin.

you'll also need to set the correct control rod length!

not knowing what Tx or heli you are using, i will give a brief run down!

depending on your Tx, if you have a dual rate switch for your rudder channel, set one at 50% gain to be in 'Rate' mode and the other to start with, at around 65% to be in 'Heading Hold' or 'Heading Lock' mode!

once again depending on the Tx/Rx combo, you may need to select the desired switch position on the Tx before plugging in/ turning on the Rx power (be it individual on a nitro or the main pack on an electric 450) so select the lower gain position (rate mode) and spool up gently, observing any movement of the tail (i.e. directional left/right). you should be near the correct rod length from the building instructions so you should be able to get in to a hover at around head height, remembering you'll have to 'fly' the tail! at this point note if there is any left/right movement and land to adjust the rod length accordingly N.B. disconnect servo power when doing the adjusting so you don't strip any threads on the servo gears (bit drawn out but it's worth avoiding the hassle of replacing the servo gears!)

once you have the tail not moving (or as near as) in 'Rate' mode, switch to 'HH' and bring into a hover once again at head height! dial up the gain until it 'hunts' (searching left and right), once there back down the gain until the 'hunting' stops!

et voila! a lot of people pooh-pooh this method, well sir i pooh-pooh their pooh-pooh! seriously i use this method and it has worked fine for me! also remember to try and do it on a still or calm day too!

as mentioned this is just one way, loads of helpful sites around aswell as your LHS that can help you out!

Thanks for the how too,
I will use it next weekend to get it all set. Iit sounds like a useful method. It is nitro Raptor 30. I went down to a club today and they discovered the guy at the shop had put the tail rotor backwards! so this was also making it spin. The gyro as you suggested needed reversing and everything reset. You are also correct in the fact that the push rod is the incorrect size and sticks in one position. this aslo causes the spin so you are correct on everything. I need to purchase a boom mount for the servo and remove the links. Ii will do this next weekend and set it the way you have suggested. Thanks for the great how to and generous info.

nice bird! yeah the tail blades are a big one HA HA HA! the club members probably told you but if you look down onto the rotor disc and the blades rotate clockwise, then the tail blades' leading edge will rotate to the rear of the heli (counter/anti-clockwise for right hand side mounted t/rotor)

cool beans! hope you get it sorted!
