I am about to fiberglass the underside of a NorthStar I have just completed and I am having a hard time coming across Denatured Alcohol for thinning the epoxy. I have checked local grocery stores and a CVS. All anyone seems to carry is the Isopropyl alcohol. Does the Denatured really work a lot better than the Isopropyl? Does Acetone work just as well because I have some of that lying around? If I am using Finish Cure epoxy that is supposed to be for fiberglassing should I avoid thinning the epoxy at all?

Thanks.

Someone is sure to correct me if I am wrong.

It has all to do with the water content of the alchohol.

There was an extensive discussion on this board I think end last year or early this year. Try a search for it under "thinning epoxy" or "alchohol".

Don't you have a Home Depot, ACE, Lowe's, . . . in town? They all should carry it. I just picked some up today to thin epoxy. I may be wrong, but you should not use acetone to thin epoxy, ethanol(denatured alcohol, etoh), is the stuff to use.

I would avoid thining the epoxy myself especially if you are putting the glass to bare balsa as I find the balsa soaks up more the thinner it is .I use 2 epoxy's one is thin for glass layups and one is thicker slightly thinner than honey for this type of work and glueing balsa to foam where I thicken it a bit with microballons.
I spead the epoxy out with a plastic speader and once it is down roll a toilet paper roll across it to soak up the excess ,this works well for me any way.

I have used denatured alchol and acetone to thin down epoxy. They both almost work equally well but you can't use acetone on balsa covered foam wing because it can seep through the balsa and eat the foam, ask me how I know. I now use exclusively the denatured alcohol from home depot. It thins the epoxy better and it evaporates alot quicker than the acetone does.

when fiberglassing I use a thinned mix of epoxy (almost the consistency of water, just a hair thicker) then I basically stick the fiberglass to the wood with this mixture. The alcohol will evaporate from the wood very quickly (the hotter it is outside the faster it evaporates) once brushed on. Doing this gives me a surface that I can put another unthinned coat on evenly without worrying about the fiberglass sliding or getting airbubbles in it.
