I am also waiting to see how DaMad's buddy Gr makes out with his design.

-DaMad, did you get that graphite i sent with the servo boards from Canada ok?

-Cheers.

Come on guys! Just buy a servo already. I mean, seriously...why try to learn about things, why try to come up with new ways of doing something, whats the point if something already works.....sheesh. Oh wait.....forgot, that would mean that thing we are all sitting at right now doesn't exist and we would be scratching lines into stones and throwing them at each other to share our ideas. IF IT DOES NOT EFFECT YOU, THEN DO NOT BOTHER US!

Ugh....ok, so. Da Mad, just a quick question. Have you ever used a window motor as a servo? Sounds like a god idea, just wondering what kind of response speed you can get out of it. Only reason I am concerned is because I am a fan of year round bashing. Love snow bashing, and in my car at least, when the motors are cold, they are really slow. Any thoughts?

Thread cleaned up. If you do not have anything positive to say, don't post. Any more trolling and further action will be taken against the instigators. Enough.

soloratov... i have thought about a window winder motor as they are smaller, lighter and designed to go forward and rev.... the older style ones would be better ..the newer ones are cable so the motor output is a plastic drum.... i was told by someone once that winder motors are junk they didnt give any reason so i might have to try it
i would think that since the motor will be "going" continuesly itll keep it warm to work effiently..
cheers

Thats a good point. I guess I also didn't think about the fact that the car would be inside before I used it, so it wouldn't really get cold until it's used. Maybe I will give one a shot as well. Pick one up at a junk yard for a few bucks, worth a shot before moving on to more expensive ideas. I have a lathe so i could always make a new pulley for it.

yeah Mudgy was saying they're not very powerful and not very effeint if i remember... but it was a robot tech head i emailed was saying they are junk and gave no reason why!! lol

oh well its not difficult to replace a wiper motor with a winder motor to try at least..

thats what i like to hear LOL there are many circuits around to try... ive tryed 2 of them and so far so good

lathes are getting very easily avalible these days... i got mine with stand and tooling for around $1800
lathe itself was $1200.. and its the biggest hobby lathe you can get before going into "industrial" size....

but you have proved you dont need a lathe.... just an outside the box mind lol

I don't remember sayin that mate.
I spent 9 yrs as a Auto sparky....
Pwr window motors are good for fwd + rev, but don't have as much grunt as a wiper.

depends on the vehicle it came from, too.
Say, an ol' Telstar (mazda626) window motors had a gear drive (window regulator had a 1/4 segment gear with scissor lift)
they weren't too bad
Of course, I also repaired windows for a RR silver shadow (same age as a HQ Holden)
man if you had your head out the window, these were like a guillotine!!

older pommy cars had shunt motors (wire wound field coils) like Austin 1100's , jags, and the like.
these days they're all permanent magnet field jobs.
You'll have to take a look around the wreckin' yards, and see what's gonna be best.

I don't remember trashin' these motors of any sort; if I did, then I apologise.
My trade background in this area would't let me say they are no good mates.

The job you guys are doing is great research for fellas who don't have the dough for the top notch Jap servo.
The skys the limit once the schem is done...possibly end up with something stronger than the $$$ version.

I have seen our German engineer friends get their jollies by saying "I created THIS machine!!"
An Aussie might make the same thing (no oil painting, mind you) and just say "yeh, it works"

Lol, Mudgy, I may be from the US, but I subscribe to the aussie way of..."yeah it works!" Is there a certain year range I should look for when I go looking for a window motor? Or just look at em and I should know which is a gear type?

Anyway, figured I would get my jab in here for the fun of it......benefits of the day job being at a machine shop.......freebies, liek a lathe that works perfectly and just needed a fresh coat of paint.

Just inherited a small air compressor from my grandfather. Needed one badly.....problem is I have 2 small pinholes in the tank and no money to get a new one. AAAAAAH! Oh well, it works for now at least.

Other two are just workspaces in the basement. Trying to figure out where to put the milling machine....yeah right, i can dream. As the wife likes to say, "Basement=Man Cave"

No worries , mate.

You are the one doing us all here a favour by working out the crap jobs, trial & error to give us the end result = answer.

Good work mate.

Soloratov, Aussies are so far away from the rest of the world, we've learnt to "just do it ourselves" (and a determined bunch, too)

I do remember you saying that you used to be an autospark, but the motor thing might have been someone else.
I must have got my wires crossed there (Pun clearly intended).

Either way, more little useful bits of information as usual and more ideas and things to look for at the scrapyard.....

Dont know if its of any use to you but i know some of the higher end cars (volvo`s mercs etc) have wipers for the headlights.
Could be a smaller package for the unit though i dont know the style or strength of them

Yeh I thought of that too, Troppo, but I doubt they'd be as powerful as a windscreen wiper motor.
Some trucks have them on the headlights too.

Had a brain explosion........have a look for REAL OLD stuff Peugeot, VW, used to be 6V DC
Perhaps a wiper motor from an ol junker running on 12V might speed things up a bit.

Converted a couple of older cars from 6VDC Positive earth to 12VDC negative earth in my time....
Had to replace the wiper motors, bulbs, etc. (and sometimes convert the 3 bobbin regulator if they had generators) with a BIG Diode from a Bus Alternator
We always left the starter motor as a 6V job...would kick over the old donks very well!

The older motors would most likely need a "birthday service" before you could use 'em

6 volt?? that would make things ALOT easier.......
you could leave half the components off the circuit if it was 6volt...
how similar are they in power???
