Virtually all of the threads on problems with the YS's here in universe finally boil down to the owner having problems because of low nitro fuel. Most of these problems will go away if we just spread the word that they all like high nitro fuel. They're not sport engines they're competition engines. You can't run one on 10-15% fuel and expect any performance.

Major,

I think performance was not his issue with Alex. Anyway, I agree about the high nitro content for the YSs. 20/20 is probably good enough. I use 30%. But 15% has been run succesfully on this engine also. It is just that the tuning can get a little ineteresting though.

Hey Guys.

I've got a new YS 91 with about 10 flights on it and I'm having the same problems! This is my 3rd YS and the only one I've had a problem with.

Ive always used 30% heli fuel and an O.S. plug. I installed the engine in a WM Dago red, inverted. I had fuel leaking from the carb but it ran great. I took it to the field a few days later and fuel was still leaking from the carb. The engine started great, but would surge up and down at idle and would die.
I richend up the low end about 1/2 turn and it idled great.
I took off made a complete flight and the engine died on final.
I went home, checked high end needle was1 1/4 turns out.
I reset low end to 1 1/2 turns out and ran it with the cowl off. It ran great! No fuel leak! Let it idle beautifuly for 30 sec and punch the throttle. Excelent respose and power with no hesitation.
I put the cowl back on and flew it the next day again a dead stick landing.
I refueled for a second flight and the surging came back. Shut engine down and richened low end 1/8 turn and it seemed to be better. I put on a great flight and a dead stick final along with a strong gust crosswind cost me the airframe.

I don't know If I should try re-tuning the engine or send it in?
Tuning hasn't seemed to work.

Thanks
Jeremy Smith

Just curious,

How long do your YS 91s idle without stopping?

My 91AC mounted inverted in a Pattern plane idles almost all day if I keep fuel jug on it.

It is cowled. has two small openings on both sides (similar to cheek cowl openings), one round for the head (about 1.5" diameter).

Using 20% works fine without any problem. I just switched to 30% Magnum DZ (cheapest for me). Much more power to pull nearly 9.5 pound plane with APC 15x8.

It took a while to get the engine idle well, but never actually had any serious problems with last 5 YS 91AC & FZs.

Jbsmith,

Are you saying that the engine ran without any problem without cowl?
With cowl, you had dead stick? Was the engine heating up?
If your engine ran fine without cowl and dead stick with cowl, it sounds very much like a heating problem.

Alex24,
30% nitro heli oiled fuel made me happy enough as Keith said above.
You can also contact Dave Shadel or Richard Verano at YS Performance for the status of your engine.

I had problems with a 110. It is in the Synergy 90 3d. I have 3 x 63’s with no problems what so ever.
The symptoms were:
1. Engine ran hard after 4 mins of flight and stopped
2. The engine would stop at middle range setting About 3500 rpm
3. top end was erratic
4. Idle spot on
The problems were chased down to:

Cooling. The rear of the cowl was opened up. The slot for pipe exit was extended to twice its length. All the exit holes were enlarged.

Bad return valve. Although it was tight, there was a small air leak. This messed up the mid range as the pressurisation was down. Sign is that there is fuel in the return pipe.

Fuel starting to go off. This caused the top end problems Using 20/20

This was enough to get the engine working properly. Also it was very tight. Now it has had about 1 gallon though it, it seems to be more powerful smoother and runs cooler.
