Tony thanks for the picture of my Super Fli in the air. I believe it's the only airborne picture I have of the airplane.

Chicago Classic Pattern Championships...thank you!

Thank you for all of the nice comments! As I said in the pilots meeting, this event was over thirty years in the making and it was a real treat to have so many terrific pilots, friends and families attend. Dave Guerin and I have been working together for about six years and love every minute of it.

SPA/BPA "Contest in a box"- We now have a "contest in a box" including contest flyer, basic promotional methodology, volunteer request for your local club, types of models flyer for your club meeting, custom trophies and the scoring system.

My pal Dennis McFarland, editor of the Hobby Merchandiser, a hobby shop related industry magazine, took a couple hundred photos...and here are a few of them.

First of all let me say THANKS to Rusty , Dave and the Fox Valley RC club for putting together such a fine event !! Lil Dave and I had a wonderful time seeing the old birds flying again like they did 30 years ago.
What a great thrill it was meeting Mark Radcliff !! great guy and he still knows how to move the sticks. I could go on and on about how much fun we had and how many new friends we made as Lil Dave and I talked about it all the way (728 miles) home.
We are now looking foward to Huntsville Ala. BPA contest, and I hope that some of you guys can come down and fly with us.
I also want to say how much fun was to get to talk to Ralph White and his son Nick !!! Hope to see you both again real soon.

That was so much fun!!! As everyone has already said, a HUGE thanks to Rusty, Dave G and everyone from the Fox Valley Club for making this event happen. What a complete and total blast kickin it old school. Still cant get the smile off my face. I really enjoyed visiting with everyone, judging with Mike Wingo and just taking it all in.
Congrats to Tim Reddelman for sweeping Advanced class with only 2 practice flights on the P7 friday evening.

Seeing Mark's '78 TOC model was a real treat. I swear, it was a LOT bigger back then!! :-) Was also a real treat to fly against Mark's P8 for the second time in my life. First time against Mark with the same P8 in my very first Masters class contest in 1981. No one on earth other than Mark keeps models that long. Wish I did....
Great flying Mark, you can still fly old school like a champ!! (even with 2 sticks).

I really hope a few more BPA events pop up. This was the most fun Ive had at a contest in a looooong time!

Just wanted to give a BIG thank you to Rusty, Dave and the whole Fox Valley gang!! I had a Great time and was looking forward to this for quite a while and didn't know if I would be able to make till about Wednesday of that week. I have included some pictures I took Friday and Saturday for your enjoyment. The first few are of Rusty's Beautiful Blue Angel Built by Dave Guerin! Sweet job to say the least. Thats the finish we all strive for but never seem to emulate. Rusty actually let me put what I think was the third? flight on this beautiful masterpiece. Its nice to see Rusty and Dave flying this airplane and not just letting it sit in the corner somewhere. It was Powered by a YS 60 short stroke and had tons of power even without a pipe. Rusty also had a beautiful Calypso powered by a Supertiger S61. And by Rusty's shirt you can guess what kind of Radio he was using !! LOL! Ralph white and son were flying his tried and true Saturn that he used to manufacture back in the day. It was OPS powered and reminded me of one I built as a younger skinnier version of me. Also my good friend George Krailing flew his Comp ARF two meter Integral on friday prior to being a club helper for the meet. A nice Tipo and Atlas and a Phoenix 8 with a Hanno Special that truly honked in overdrive that sounded like it was just loafing.

Mike Mconville and His wife Came with a sweet Taurus from back in the day that had a Evolution 52 and some killer purple fuel line!! (Mike said it was a phase) Mike also brought the long awaited Phoenix7 we've all been waiting for and was kind enough to share with me for the contest. Its on the Horizon web site now with the part number HAN4755. It had all the power you'll ever need with the EVO 60 and Macs pipe combo meal they recommend. Put in the radio of your choice and some Eflight or Robart gear and your good for the next BPA meet hopefully in your area soon.

Well thats about it for me and I look anxiously for the next meet soon or the return of this one next year. I had a great time meeting new people and reacquainting myself with old friends. This type of flying was what I lived for as a kid but was eclipsed by the current style of today and I thought was gone forever. At the time money was an issue (still is ) and changing to the different and always changing aircraft was not in the cards for me personally. I hope we'll see more of these events and see each other again in the near future but for now keep em flying and see you soon.

Rusty Dave and all:
Congrats on a very successful event. Great weather, great site, great turnout, great flying!
I plan on getting a vintage plane ready to compete in the event next year. It was way cool seeing the old pattern planes put thru their paces.
I often said that as much as pattern has changed over the years it still remains very much the same.
Next year!!!!!!

Is this event being held in Chicago next year? I too plan to have a UFO to enter in Novice next year if an event is held near Minneapolis again. Chicago was close enough for me to participate. I don't think I could make it to the southern states.

Chicago Classic Pattern Championships...2011!

Based on the positive feedback, I am planning on requesting the Fox Valley Aero Club host the "Chicago Classic Pattern Championships 2011" with the following classes:

SPA Novice
SportSPA sman
BPA Advanced
BPA Masters
Classic TOC

Tentative date- Memorial Day weekend 2011

The Classic TOC is a new event that I am developing with the simple goal of flying the models and sequences of the 1978 and 1980 TOC.

Rusty's Elves have developed a series of high quality laser cut kits of the MAN Akromaster by Keck, Zlin 526 by Bonnema (easily modified to the 526 AS) and the Laser 200 85" by Ulery. Each kit has been re-engineered to modern building and construction techniques, includes high quality laser cut balsa and lite plywood parts and precision cut CNC 1 pound foam wing/stab/fin/rudder parts. The Laser has fiberglass parts available from Fiberglass Specialties, the Akromaster uses a Sig 16" plastic canopy and the Zlin will have an elf created cowl and canopy.

All classes may use retracts and tuned exhaust systems and basically any design through 1988 may be used.

Concours d'Elegance Champion and Runner-Up will be awarded to the models with the best design, construction, finish and graphics as voted by registered pilots and is sponsored by the Classic Pattern-Trader.

Rusty, I like what you are doing very much. Thanks for taking this project on. I hope I can make it next year.
Will I be able to fly more than 1 class? (Toc plane and BPA plane)
Will it be more than 1 day next year? ( hope so!)

You'll love it folks, you really will. Rusty, Dave, and the FVAC crew put on what was like a "Field of Dreams" for classic pattern. At home I'm still bantering on about it like a kid.

Chicago Classic Pattern Championships...Classic TOC Class!

Question- Rusty, can I fly in more than one class...Classic TOC AND another class?

Rusty- Yes.

Typical quote about the sequences from the 1978/1980 TOC- "...the manuevers are pretty simple and may even be less difficult than the current IMAC Basic and Intermediate classes..."

Rusty- Traveling from Chicago to Nebraska is a simple one day trip...in a modern air conditioned car traveling at 70 mph. How about making the same trip in a covered wagon? Now that is a little different experience! Modern airplanes, particularly modern engines make the models fly much better. Flying the older TOC designs with the same motors will be a challenge and improve one's skills in the process.

Example- Last Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning I completed about (25) flights with the Calypso and Blue Angel. I felt more and more "connected" to the models with each flight, particularly the requirement to add rudder very early and managing momentum and power differently. Later Sunday morning a fellow FVAC pilot asked me to test fly his new Comp ARF Integral that was set-up by Jason Shulman powered by a YS 140DZ. I have about 150 flights on my Hacker powered Integral and last flew it about a month ago. Virtually the second I took off I started smiling...the model flew effortlessly, silky smooth, rudder authority...I was instantly reminded of how incredible modern models fly.

The benefit of the all of my classic flights is that I flew better because I needed to fly better to make the classics look the same!

Build a TOC model and a classic pattern model and come to Chicago!

Likewise Mike; wished you'd have had more time on saturday. I'll miss Saturday at Tri-Village but plan on coming out on Sunday (family reunion and Pops 80th B-day on 6/26.)  But I'm feeling that hooked (no pun intended) on RC pattern all over again feeling. I have a Spot-On 50 that I was going to get your opinion on for an entry level ship, but I'll PM you on that. Anyhow, great to see you again and look forward to seeing you in 3 weeks (any chance Larry Ott might come by? Remember Jim (or was it Bill, Bennett?))
See ya soon.
Mark

Larry Ott's working on a plane as we speak. He lives in Denver now but he's back along with Mark Doucy of Indy another old flyer from the 60's. Cool thing is both Larry and Mark Doucy fly Mode 1 like me. That's old school!!!!!
Jim Bennett is out but Mickey sold his Conquest to a guy from Alabama at the contest. Were working on Jimmy and I'm hoping. He was a heck of a stick. See you at the Shoe in a few. Mike Mueller

That's Larry's Dirty Birdy Ron, he used the same scheme on his Tipo also. Was that pic at Busse Woods? If so, I was there and met Larry at that one. I have a few old Polaroids from the RC3 contests in the late seventies that Larry (and Mups) attended too.
