Status: offline 		Thought I would let you guys know in case you need some hinge glue and your LHS still has some left. Went to the LHS yesterday to buy some Pacer Hinge glue. Was told told that they had 2 bottles left and they can't get any more!! No reason given to the hobby shop other than it is now listed as a discontinued item from the supplier! Last year the main man. of CA went under. There is an alternative supplier for that but they also made 15 minute epoxy which no other supplier (that I am aware of) makes. I don't know if there is a similiar product for the hinge glue so I bought both bottles to continue my winter projects. Whats next, can't buy covering?!?

"...Use 30 min. epoxy, white (aliphatic resin), or ZAP Hinge Glue..."

I haven't tested aliphatic resin but I'd bet it works as well as the Hinge Glue. Up to now I have been using ZAP's product because, well, the bottle said "Hinge Glue" on it, yet suspicously it had very (very very) close similarities to aliphatic resin. When I first entered the hobby I bought two bottles of after-run oil because the bottle said "After-Run Oil" on it. I know better now!

Anyone up to doing a test for different glues and reporting results?

Status: offline 		Just bought a bottle of Pacer Hinge Glue. I'v never used it before, and when I went to read the instructions on the back of the bottle, that's where they had put the price tag with sticky back. Try as I might, I couldn't get it off without destroying the instructions. Is there any big secret to using this stuff, or do you just apply and let dry?

Status: offline 		I've never used "hinge glue", but I've had good success with canopy glue, Gorilla glue, and Elmer's Pro Bond (same as Gorilla glue). So far (30+ years) I've not had a hinge failure. Had every thing else fail, but so far no hinge problems.

Status: offline 		PMW isn't the Elmers version of gorilla glue called ELMERS ULTIMATE? I also see they have a new NANO glue that is similar, I tried it and it didn't seem any different than the ultimate to me.

I believe the gorilla swells more, but its much more expensive.

What ever any of you try of this type of glue do some experimenting first on scraps. It isn't pretty but it has its uses. I had a buddy that just dumped a BUNCH in a project and it TOOK OVER THE PLANE !! ahahahah I think he actually was mad and blamed me ! Its a good glue to learn about before you dump a pint of it out ! I actually babysit it as it expands.

Status: offline 		I don't know about the swelling but http://www.elmers.com/homerepair/ultimate/instructions.aspx covers its use. Would appear to be roughly equivalent to Gorilla Poly. I agree about testing on scraps.

Here is the text of the document:


Pacer Technology Hobby Hinge Glue (PT55) is a maximum strength formula used to bond all hinge materials. Not for use with Styrofoam. Parts can be handled in 30 minutes.

PROPERTIES: Appearance – Yellow liquid with sweet pleasant odor.

USE INSTRUCTIONS:

Remove cap and install Z-End (PT18) extend tip. Hold tip directly to hinge slot or hole and squeeze bottle to gently force glue into place. Wipe away excess. Insert hinge and wipe off excess glue. Parts may be handled in 30 minutes. Clean up Z-End with water before glue dries in tip.

STORAGE AND SHELF LIFE

Recap for storage. Protect from freezing. A one-year shelf life can be expected.

SAFETY AND HANDLING PRECAUTIONS

Mild skin & eye irritant with direct contact. For eye contact, wash eyes with water for 15 minutes & get medical attention if irritation persists. Wash skin with soap & water after use. Do not ingest. Small ingested amounts may have no effect; with large amounts seek medical advice (contains vinyl acetate polymer emulsion).

You are correct about the Elmers. I'm not sure why I thought it was Pro Bond, but I just checked a new bottle I just bought. It is Ultimate. And I also babysit the glue until it does its thing. However, I've found that if you let it swell out the hinge holes, it is pretty easy to trim away with an X-acto blade. But that is certainly not the best procedure, just someting to remember if it swells after you walk away from the project for awhile and come back to find it wasn't completely cured. Thanks for the correction about the Elmers.
