DLE 35 rear exhaust fits inside the cowl with no cutting/trimming, should be a good match for the BN Citabria....

Bass1,
Fuse is all Sitka spruce and bass wood, used 1/8 ply circles about the size of a quarter, cut and notched over 1/4 sticks. The fuse got very rigid/solid and resist any twisting after these mods.

The top and bottom fuse sheeting also strengthens the fuselage and aids in rigidity as well. Try to keep her as light as possible. They definitely fly well "on the wing" if kept at a reasonable weight. I've seen one weighing in excess of 19 lbs and another at about 15 lbs and the 15 pounder just flies so much nicer and glides and floats like a butterfly!. After all, The Citabria IS classified as a "Light Plane"

Top pic is the 1/8" BN landing gear and wing strut fittings that came with the kit, below it is the 3/16 landing gear and wing strut fittings I fabricated this morning. The 1/16" added to the gear sure helped and still has good damping, flexing characteristics............

When using a fiberglass cowl on the nose of the BN Citabria is it mounted flush to the firewall or does it slide on over the firewall? I have never seen a completed BN Citabria up close and was wandering if I could get some input on this, thanks...........Mike

I fabricated about a 3/4" length built up standoff frame that was glued to the firewall to accomodate a flush mounted fiberglass cowl. It's been awhile but if I recall correctly I traced the outline of the stock firewall and made a cardboard stock template then reduced the size by about 1/16" all around and used that shape to cut 2 -1/8" lite ply formers. I used five 3/4" hardwood blocks to serve as spacers for the two lite ply formes. The blocks were also tapped with a 4/40 tap to serve as cowl anchor points for 4/40 machine screws. I also sheeted the final assembly for general principles. So basically I just added a 3/4" long extension to the firewall about 1/16" smaller than the actual firewall so that the cowl fits over it like a glove and mates perfectly flush (well almost ) to the nose of the airplane. This assumes that your cowl was desinged to be flush fit. Mine is a Nosen "Decathlon style" bought from Fiberglass Specialties. Hope this makes sense..

Thanks Bass1 for the quick reply and I do understand exactly what you did making that extension, you explained the procedure very well, thanks. I ordered the BN Citabria cowl/wheelpants today from Fiberglass Specialties, not the Decathlon Style. The fiberglass cowl that came with the BN kit measures 8" 1/8 wide by 8" 1/2 high by 6' 1/4 long and fits perfectly on the nose. Fiberglass Specialties BN Citabria cowl measures 8" 1/2 wide by 9 1/8 high by 6 1/2 long, so the width is 3/8 wider on the Fiberglass Specialties and 1/4 in. longer which made me wander if the cowl should be butted/mounted flush up to the firewall or slid over the firewall with the extra 1/4 in. Not worried about the height cause it's workable. The green fiberglass cowl/wheelpants and aluminum landing gear in the pic below are the original AA Industries Bud Nosen that could be ordered optional with the kit. The white fiberglass parts are the new ones coming in from Fiberglass Specialties..........

If you already had the stock 'glass pieces, why did you go with aftermarket parts?

Just wondering if there is an advantage to that as I have the stock 'glass for mine as well, though the cowl has been cut for a side mounted ASP which I will be replacing anyway.

Sorry, had to repost having server and font problems, and can't post pics of the kit today for some reason, must be the storm on the east coast causing problems.

Twin-Flyer,
I like the Fiberglass Specialties cowl and wheelpants much better than the original fiberglass parts that came with my BN kit, just my own personal preference I guess. The styling/quality is much better overall and the lower air breather intake is well defined compared to the original parts. The original factory BN Citabria fiberglass cowl is replicated to look like the early full scale Bellanca Citabria, the Fiberglass Specialties cowl and wheelpants replicate later models of the the Champion Citabria which I like and as you know later evolved into the Decathlon style. I have replaced the entire BN Citabria kit with a shortkit from royalhfarms@greatlakes.net  and all wood and hardware. Still have the complete original BN kit and will be placing it in the Market or ebay after my build is complete. The old blue one is the Bellanca Citabria, the red is the Champion Citabria, slight difference in the cowls.

I have an old kit that was purchased at a swap meet. It is partially complete and needs finishing. I was wondering if any of you might have a suggestion on how to do the windows for the Bud N. kit. I have never tried to form plastic before. Does the side glass just screw onto the sides?  Also I screwed up and glued the upper portion of the front wind screen to the center section of the wing. (It had broken off and I thought it was suppose to be glued to the cnter section.}  Is that something I should try and redo. I can't  think of a reason to remove the center section of the wing. Thanks..

As far as the side windows, I did mine this way http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9084867/anchors_9085959/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#9085959. The windshield was cut from a template on the plans and you have to wrestle with it to form it and glue it to the fuse. A hair dyer helps soften it to make it a bit easier to bend and form. I have to change it out every 2 years or so as it starts off hazing in the bends, then the hairline cracks eventually start, and finally it just splits open at the bends. Nature of the beast I guess not having an actual form fitting windshield vacu-formed and shaped from a plug. No big deal though. I'm getting use to the routine.

loserr,
When assembling the fuse/cabin parts which consist of 3 layers, FA's, FC's (ply) and FB's, I made the outside layer FB's overlap the side window cutouts all around the windows by 1/8 and glue the side windows from the inside up against the 1/8 overlap for a nice flush fit, thats how I'm doing mine anyway. Using clear 3 mil from Balsa USA for the window material  and going to give it a light dark tint with Rit Dye black..... http://shop.balsausa.com/category_s/183.htm  ,     http://balsausa.com/#/accessories/4551518701

Bass1,
Is the covering scheme on the top of your wing similar to this? Really like your cover job and want to replicate it on my build.....

73, Yes that's the exact scheme on the top of the wing with the stars on the underside. The underside stars on mine mesure 7 and 3/4" point to point and seem to be about scale size. Speaking of BUSA, When I was building mine I was searching for an "N" number decal with that typical rear slant that you see on most Citabrias and the decal sheet from the Citabria Pro from Balsa USA is pretty darn close to perfect size. For $10, it was a good buy and looks pretty darn good as long as you trim the excess clear decal nice and close to the numbers. Also used the checkerboard patterns on the decal sheet for the pants and fuse front. Not quite the perfect scale shape but it's close and the price was right. The tail stars and Bellanca logo that I used were cut from 21st century fabric and I used an ultra fine sharpie and art store stencil for the word"Bellanca".

Hey Gary!
Not rushing the build as we got a long building season up here in northern Maine about 5-6 months of snow on the ground till spring! Thanks for selling me your BN Citabria last year, gonna try and have it ready to go for this summer. Post some pics of that 40% you were telling me about!

Here ya go buddy.

She is 42% and a 14' wing span. ZDZ 210 for power.

Highlight of the year was being invited by the AMA to fly her as part of the RC demo at the Cleveland National Air Show. It was a blast.

At some point, when I get a few other things out of the way, my intentions are to change her identity. I attend both giant scale and war bird events, and I would like to take this plane to both, so here will be her new identity.

It will take some physical mods as well as new paint, but it will never be static judged, so I will make some compromises. I plan on changing the tail, and redoing the gear, but I think I will leave the wing tips go for now. Another thing is the cowl. If I can find a 42% Champ cowl for her it will be nice. If not, I'll go with the cowl I have.

Paint will be fairly easy. I can tape off the red on her now, and shoot over the rest with white Klass Cote.

I hope to have it converted by next fall for the 2013 Monster Planes / 12 O'Clock High event in Lakeland Florida.

LOL!!!!! Thanks buddy.

The kids love this plane, and the parents got a kick out of the pictures. I love seeing them all enjoy it so.

What do you think of the conversion plan?

dunno, always loved that Greg Koontz scheme, maybe you should sell it to me and find another one that is white! If I ever get to that level I would be very proud for sure!

I know what you mean. She is a handsome devil as is. Looks soooooo cool with the smoke system filling the sky with billowing white trails.

I like the challenge of the makeover as well. Although not as attractive, she would be one of a kind IMO. I have never seen 'Bug Smasher' modeled in any scale, much less this big.

She flies like a dream. I can picture the grin that would be on your face with your hands on the sticks.
