Mike, is right about the blunt tail surfaces, they are a big issue, and it would be worth addressing that as well.

Sess, it would be cool to see you continue doing a sytematic clean up of the plane with a resulting speed log. It's good that you have a consistent running engine in the prime of it's life.
If uncoweled Q40s with LG have done 200, it's just a matter of time and persistence before you do it.

Bah. The field was a bog today so I stuck with my edf Draken and my Blizzard (awesome speedy sailplane, highly recommend.) I think the Magnum is going on an official hold until next year. Stay tuned!

I got out for a quick magnum flight today, 5'c, hands felt cold, even colder with fuel on them.

Rpm was down on my west50v1, flight count 212.

She needs another set of bearings/piston/liner for a xmas present.

Did you get those parts under the tree mk1? I can't wait for a decent day here. This weekend was/is in the 20's with 30 mph winds. A bit strong for my tastes. Here's a video of my clipped Q500 with Nelson power from last year. Check out 33 seconds in. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvL15OjQjmU

Here's a shot of it against my GP Su-31...................but we won't talk about that 3D stuff here. 10 inch clip, plane must have over 200 flights on it as it was passed between two fellow club members before I clipped, recovered and Nelson-ed it.

Alright guys, finally time for some action. Took tomorrow off as it is going to be 72 degrees and sunny. My buddy is bringing his so far very accurate radar gun, so pictures of the gun will be taken if anything extraordinary happens. I used some Turtle Wax spray and she looks slippery. Updates to follow!

I hear an ATV or something in the background - is that on standby to collect the rubble?

You'll pick up some rpm on that prop when you trim the header. You must have more flights on that Magnum than anyone in recorded history.

Heres the previous old west 50v1 piston,Had a good season out of it, gone through a few.
Some pics.

You can see part of the piston has broken away. Now, where do those broken bits go? I think they are shot out at high velocity from the tuned pipe. Maybe not a good idea to look at the back of the exhaust, bits or a bearing fly at you. I saw no metal debris inside crankcase. I have had individual bearings dissapear from the bearing before. Sent that back to weston but again no sign of bearings in crancase, so i'm assuming they fly out of pipe because they are not in there too rattling around. No bearing loss this time.
Think it has a phenetic rear bearing, is that the right word. Never quite sure if its open or closed face that should face the rear back plate or wether it matters?

Also I've included a pic of a usa 5 cents coin ((I presume its legal tender) Its a coin I kept from when I visted the states once.),
the 50v1 piston and a saito 62a that I destroyed last year, just fo some size comparrison fun

Its interesting to note that the 50v1 piston is only slightly bigger than the 5 cents coin. So something as small as a 5 cents coin pushing the magnum 150mph plus. Ha lets see a lipo that small do the same.!
Maybe I could glue the 5 cents coin to the top of the new piston and get the compression up?

Meh I got in some flights but the tune was off and the Magnum was only puttzing around at 160. It felt so slow it was painful. When I got it down I saw that the needle valve was very loose, and was surely spinning around messing up my top end. If anything, it was good to get the dust off of my Magnum and get re-acclimated to the plane before pushing it further.

Is it the spring tension on the metal clip that creates friction with the thumb thread, high speed needle, that was working it loose? Vibration?

The Nelson doesn't have a spring clip. It is a brass nut with a plastic insert that sort of squeezes the needle valve as you tighten it against the needle valve assembly. The needle valve itself is just a piece of threaded rod. I fixed this issue, so next time out I will need to fiddle with the needle while it is running. And that is not my favorite pastime.

Back in the old days when a 5 cent coin "a nickel" was made of nickel you could probably bond it to the top of the piston and try it, today it's some cheap alloy that world probably melt.
Some day in the not to distant future there will be a batter that size that might do it.
I loved the sound of that thing cranking on by nice to see you babying it.

Ses,
Sorry to hear that your plane was suffering from spring fever.
Every spring seems to be tune up time with our engines.

If you sleep all winter with the engine under your pillow, bad stuff like loose needles can't happen.

Thats too bad about the dirtbike burnouts, no respect...we had someone do a bunch of donuts on our nicely manicured field one year with a couple of what looked like car tracks,[>:] after a bunch of rain we had, a lot of work to fix! I feel your frustration.
looks like a good launch.
