Im starting this thread for all those guys building or just getting started on the Flash this winter. Its a popular plane, so I know alot of you are out there. Post your pics and lessons learned. Mine arrived last week and it will be a couple weeks before getting started.. Its a thunderbird scheme. I will be powering with a wren. I have a super sport, but will probably upsize to the new 160...

I plan to put a header tank someplace, smoke, and lighting, with a semi scale cockpit and a thunderbird pilot. Probably an F-18 cockpit because its longer to fit under the long canopy..
My dreamworks gear from the Elan is a drop in fit with 3 inch mains..

More later, but here is how it arrived...snugly and expertly packed...thanks Ray!!

time to put in an order to Dreamworks for supplies..

Screws for stab horns are to short. 3x16mm in bag, need to be at least 3x20mm to engage nyloc.

Status: offline 		One more! Super Sport Wren will fly the Flash OK, but not great. I have to agree with Raf (more power). 21# (P-80, etc. will fly it fine), 120SE will fly it great, 160?. I inherited a Flash with main and wing tanks. Put my OLD P-80 in it. Gets off of asphalt in 100' (both tanks full) if I let it run to long on the ground. Flys forever on full tanks (can't tell you or you would think I am making it up.)

Status: offline 		Good call on the nylocs.. thats one of those hopefully common sense things, but you never know..... If I go with the 160, I will turn it down until Im comfortable with the jet. I know it will hold up, its just fast as He!! with 30# plus.. I flew one with a 120 in it and it was a sweetie..

I think Im zeroing in on a 20 ounce header tank under the main, and not using the wing tank. I normally fly 6 mins in everything.. I can always add it later..

Question: who has a decent 1/8 scale Thunderbird Pilot?

Status: offline 		Mines already built with over 100 flights but I need someone to cut the wing tips off to send to Dreamworks so he can make lenses for everyone, that way I don't have to be the Guinea Pig for tiptank lights haha.... Have fun with the build, its one great airplane. Booster 130 in mine and its a beast, I love it...

skymac, what are you setup numbers/cg/throws, fuel size/smoke...? It seems the consensus is 365mm for CG from the other threads..

Status: offline 		Here are a couple of photos (hopefully) of the servo mounts and opening in the stab. I have seen a couple that were not trimmed enough and the front or rear of the hatch would stick up.

Status: online 		Doug, your work looks great. Regarding the Bolts for the stab and rudder, the ones in my kit were the correct length. In fact I may trim a little extra off when complete.

Where did you get the spiral wrap for the servo leads. I have not been able to find any that small.

Status: offline 		I don't remember correctly on the c.g. or the throws, I'm in Afghanistan right now but I can probably shoot you those numbers in two weeks once I get home. I personally have mine setup a little aft I believe but I can't remember, with the uat full, you can push it on its tail and it almost wants to sit there but will fall back down on the nose. Im using both tanks and I fly with a timer set at 6 mins at the meets so I can have another full minute of "cool down laps" if the pattern is full, haha.... I have stretched it to 9 minutes when just goofing off and doing alot of slow flight.

I also don't use the excess flap that I see alot of people are using. When comming into land, it finds a sweet spot and grooves in with a nice aoa, around 3*, but I like to fly a flatter approach, so it works well, no crow aswell.

With the Booster 130, the throttle response is so fast that with the full bypass sitting on the ground (not flying) it will try to compressor stall if you slam the throttle. When the airplane was new, I also tried a full throttle run up on the ground and it collapsed the inlet joiner, so we layed carbon around it and never tried that again, haha... f you take the cover off of the bypass the throttle response gets restored to 2 stroke response, but with the full bypass it takes maybe 3/4 of a second longer from idle to full throttle in the air, no big deal to me. IT makes me more comfy when hill climbing with a full bypass and with an open one, temps over 5 flights with it on and off, the avg. was the same within 5*c...

If you have a couple of extra dollers and you plan on keeping your flash, buy the retracts and struts from Todd at Dreamworks. Maybe you will have better luck with the pins but I couldn't keep them from turning, back when I had them installed I just aeropoxyed them in the trunion, It got old quick...

it doesn't look underpowered to me...maybe the air density is different in Pennsylvania.

Status: online 		I still have not maidened mine yet. Kinda lolly gaging around.. Hell I haven't even started the Rhino yet either.
I set my CG at 370 and my throws were a mix between Riches and Gary Arthur's from the other thread. Hopefully I will maiden mine in a week or two if the weather holds up.

Here is Gary Arthur's set up from the other Flash Thread:

CG with gear down, UAT full = 365mm from rear of tip tank
Aileron up 7/16" down 1/2" 35% expo
Elev 7/8" up 7/8" down 25% expo
rudder 2" left/right 15% expo
Flap 5/8" take-off 1-5/8" landing
Crow (ail) 1/2" up

No elev trim required with full flap and crow.

Just watch it when you deploy you landing gear for the first time if you are using the front gear door....whaaa hoooo it will pitch down on you.
I talked to Andy Kane and he recommended a few degrees of up with landing gear deployment, so I set about 0.1" of up...it made all of the difference in the world.

Status: online 		I am just at the point of installing the pipe I upgraded to a Tamjets pipe to help keep the weight down. Is there any need to install any more heat protection than the aluminum tape and shielding for the servo leads that the instructions recommend. I have ceramic blanket and BVM heat shield on hand, just didn't know if I needed it in the back end of the plane. I am only going to use a the top half of the bypass and am using the NACA inlet cut outs. Power for this one will be a Jet Central Rabbit.

Over-kill, if nothing ever goes wrong, but it would be nice to have the elevators working when the pipe is compromised or the back of the plane is on fire.

the alum tape on the stab is a good idea.. I think I will do that inside the fuse.. I will also cover the servo wires with alum tape all the way to the turbine inlet. I have seen what happens if the engine mount gives or something during a hard landing. gotta watch the weight in the back..

I've flown this this thing wide open for 6 minutes, JetCat Teetan SE in 100+ degree weather.

Status: online 		I did not use that much Alum Tape. I just did the stabs. Not the Entire pipe.
I also did the servo wires all the way to the front of the turbine.and the top of the Rudder servo plate
I did put a tube in for the wires where it passes the side of the turbine and wraped the tube in the Alum tape. I believe the tube was from a greatplanes missle kit for one of there warbirds or something I had it laying around for a while.
