Dud Jett? That is just ignorant...

No 46FX will approach or be near a Jett-50.... Maybe you were not running the right prop.?

There is a reason the the Jett engines are respected-

Sorry I tried EVERY engine and have now settled on a Jett.60 in my F20... tuned pipe, his spinner..it's awesome..I can't imagined what you are saying about it being a "dud"
All I know it's been clocked by radar at 152mph..that's fast enough for me! Hopefully you'll be happy with the combo your going to use. KG

Those are generally light so it might work well-

Most successful threads I have read about the DC F-20 have been featuring the Jett-50, or YS-45 tho...

Keep us posted-

Great thread guys,

I now have a dilema, I am currently building a patriot, need to build the fuse and I am ready for covering and adding the retracts, electronics, and engine etc...

but last night I was suckered into taking home a Direct connection f-20 tigershark kit.

I read in one of the earlier reply's that the f-20 is not as fast as the patriot.

I am contemplating the sale of one or the other.

I need advise! what to do?

....keep 'em both.... ....DC is no longer producing the
F-20, and The Patriot is always scarce....

I had a feeling that would be the advise, I am going to have to invest in another hangar. I am running out of parking spots

Any thoughts on which one is faster? Assuming you use the same engine/prop/fuel combo?

I would think that the Patriot might be a touch faster, due
mainly to the slimmer fuse and the swept-back wing....but
I'm guessing. I'm flying the Cermark .40 size now....I have
the DC and the Patriot in the pile.

A buddy has a patriot with a .50 something on it and fixed gear, and we raced it against my DC f20, with retracts and a YS.45. Mine was running richer than I like so there may have been more in it, but they were pretty much dead even.

Man I gotta repair mine! After reading all these posts it reminded me how much fun my Cermark with an MVVS .45 was, I had a hard time thinking on Monday mornings after flying on Sunday. How did it get hurt? I lost my spinner in flight. I was amazed at how much slower it got. Then I shorted the landing, not adjusting to the slower plane. I basically blew out the back half of the fuse, should be easy to rebuild. Thanks for the motivation. I am currently working on a .25 size Brown B2 "Miss Los Angeles" from an old set of AMA plans. I have been told this little dude should run in the 120+ range. I started this to replace the F-20 but I think I need to have both in the air! I also have a set of DC plans to build from in the future. Long live the Tiger Shark!

John, your F-16 video ROCKS! I also have one of these kits waiting to be built. That movie makes my decision to build the RCM SR-71 next a tough one.

Would the f-20 be a good or bad choice as a first speed plane? How stable is it at lower speeds. Do you have to install the landing gear as retracts? What would the top speed be with a Jett 50?

Dean320,

The F-20 is a good choice for your first speed plane, however, I would recommend starting with a stock 46 motor, and upgrade after you get used to it. They float in quite nice actually, but you do need to have some throttle in it for landing.

The DC F-20 does not have retracts. The Kanghe one does. Get the DC, cover it bright with the bottom a completely different color, as these can get out of your sight very quickly. Use the fixed gear it comes with.

What kind of top speed could I expect from it with the 47 and with the Jett 50?

With a stock motor, I'm guessing about 110-115 mph. 10-20 mph faster with the higher performance motors. Don't hold me to this as there ARE a lot of variables. Perhaps someone who has had theirs radared will chime in.

I think the DC F-20 is a tad "cleaner" with a little less airfoil (wing thickness). It's also an ARC, which allows you to do any mods you want.

You may also want to consider using a stock 61 motor. I did this with my first F-20. A little more work to fit it up front, but a little more speed than the stock 46's.

Try Kanghe, they should have the 60 F-20 and the 40, both in ARF's

The pix on page 8 of the instruction manual shows the stabilizer and the torque rod being prepared.Later in the book it says nothing about installing the stab and elevators up side down where the threaded torque rods point down. If the rods point up they would go thru the top of the fuse to work.
Am I dreaming here??
Also seams like once the stab is glued in, the fuse needs to be notched out a little to insert the rod in place.

The main question is once installed do the torque rods point down inside the fuse?? I talkin bout where you connect the clevices.

Thanx a mil
Walt

You put the rods in AFTER you install the stab..notch the corner and then glue the hinge/ rod holder in your cut out slot with epoxy after the stab is in! Hope that helps.... oh and yeah the rods face down!

That answers it exactly and it's appreciated.
There may be more stupid questions following but I'm quitting for the nite.

Did you mount the stab and fin and then cover it or did you cover and then glue them in??

Dang,Fly,
That's a work of art.I don't think I'd have nerve to put that in the air.Beautiful plane.I'm nervous with my plain/janes and just don't know if I could do that one...Did a fantastic job for sure.

Did you use the torque rods that came with the plane??They seem flimsy.Seems like there would be some slop in the elevator torque rods from where the clevice hooks on to where it sandwiches between the stab and elevators.I'd like to use the ones that came with it but not sure.

Did you use the motor mount that came with it?? I'll probably use it if the Jet 50 will fit nicely between the legs of the mount.Haven't tested the fit yet.The holes are already drilled in the firewall and don't want to make anymore.

Haven't investigated this either but the motor mount don't have a hole in it for the front nose gear to slide in.Instructions say that the bearing has been installed at the factory but I don't see anything in there.

I don't see blind nuts in there for the motor mount to screw to either unless they are buried in the firewall wood.

That's all I can think of rite now as I'm on my first cup of coffee and not thinking real straight.

Thanx for the help.
Walt

One more Question.
Instruction number 14 says to cut away the "bottom" center sheeting to install the servo..The servo should go in the top of the wing, not the bottom..Rite??
Thanx Walt
