uciflylow -> SPAD! What makes these coroplast things fly so well? (4/1/2002 8:17:42 AM)

I just flew my newly built SPAD today, that's simple plastic airplane design, and I can't beleave how well it flys!

Does the flex in some of the parts make them fly so well? Does the wing actualy undercamber in flight? Does it flex up some and give a dihedral effect?

This plane is made from gutter pipe and coroplast and will fly hands off, I culdn't beleave how well this thing flys.

I just wondered if anyone else has any theories as to why this plane flys so well.

Cactus. -> SPAD! What makes these coroplast things fly so well? (4/6/2002 11:40:30 PM)

we got some very simple combat deltas www.rcflyers.fsnet.co.uk but they fly so well, i got a kit, and now they springing up copies all over, they dont glide too well tho.
i think the small size and weight has a lot to do with stability. either that or correx is magic

Enjoy while you can. Some fly great and others are junk. Just good cheap fun. My Bi-plane is the only remake that has improved or flew the same. ( my remake flies better) Have fun no rules apply. Matt

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "enjoy while you can". Do you mean that they are short lived due to the way they are flown?
They are the most fun I have had in RC for cheep ever. In combat it hurts a lot less to lose a plane you have a day invested in than a week.

aftcg -> Did you build the spad? (4/7/2002 11:22:23 PM)

I am thinking seriously about spads. I'm really intrigued how the seem to go together quickly and it seems to me that plastic would hold up better than wood any day.
I enjoy fun flyers and I believe they're being made with spads too.
Did you put this one together? Is it complicated? Do you need any special tools? Do you have much experience with wood kits?
I'm not much of a builder although I've done many repairs (yes, I crash on a regular basis - trying to learn 3d flying). If only takes a day to build a funflyer spad, I've got to try one.
Let me know how does for you - by the way, what kind of plane is it?

swampgas -> SPAD! What makes these coroplast things fly so well? (4/8/2002 3:34:43 AM)

Spads are simple and cheap! Little time and money. When you get one that flies right you push it hard. They don't make good lawn darts. Just fewer pieces to pick up. I build with wood and coroplast. The plastic is great but balsa is too. I enjoy building and flying. No special tools needed for spads. Matt

uciflylow -> SPAD! What makes these coroplast things fly so well? (4/8/2002 8:01:05 AM)

I have lots of experence with wood kits, matter of fact I have a Midwest Citabria that I'm working on now. The SPADs are very quick and easy to build. I plan on going over to a members house and help him build his first in the morning. I beleave I could build one to fly starting at 7am and fly by after lunch!
I think wood kits are much prettier and lighter for the same size wing span. For combat the spad is great due to the ease of construction and low cost of components involved in the construction process.

What's a Spad? At first I thought it was a semi scale WWI Bipe. Someone post a pic!

Scorpionjack -> SPAD! What makes these coroplast things fly so well? (4/9/2002 4:15:37 AM)

SPAD's are just pure fun! I just ordered another 4 full sheets cut Corosplast 4MM from http://www.harborsales.net/ Free Shipping for (16) 24 X 48 Sheets in Color(Thats 16 Wings for $35.! These things are springing up everywhere and I even got the real Old Farts interested(65-77). So interested I have 8 of them for them now. Thanks to Tattoo : ).

uciflylow -> SPAD! What makes these coroplast things fly so well? (4/9/2002 4:55:25 AM)

We built another today! They are sooo quick and easy to build! BTW this fella is around 75.

Ollie -> ? (4/9/2002 5:02:24 AM)

It isn't about fuel economy. It isn't about top speed. It isn't about range or endurance. It isn't about load carrying ability.

It is only about enough thrust and lots of controlability.

a correx delta for slope soaring, seen one go and now im building one to go fly off the dunes in evening sea breazes.
look great at night, the video on this site is cool

Phil

Delta combats what a great idea. I must have one. Can’t believe with an airfoil of only 4 mil it gets much lift. Perhaps that’s why it doesn’t float. Have you seen any constructed with a thicker airfoil?

With a plane like this I would mind people sticking a blade of grass and tickling their ear while I fly. ha ha

Cactus. -> SPAD! What makes these coroplast things fly so well? (4/10/2002 12:16:53 PM)

yes i have seen, look at my link in the last post :p its constructed from 2mm correx and is for light slope combat, wouldnt take an EPP glider wacking it. but it says on the site bigger 4mm correx versions have been built, and i would guess these are very tough.
i was going to build a new combat delta coz if you look in those videos on the rcflyers site all that stuff i did killed it after a few weeks, on the new one i was going to build it as normal, then add a top sheet to make airfoil shape, but it really dosnt need it, just extra weight anyway.
if you want to build a mugi its www.mugi.co.uk
if you want a correx combat delta the page is at www.rcflyers.fsnet.co..uk
also has pics of others built, tho i still dont know why one has been built with 4 surfaces... 3 and no mixer makes sense....

Modern airfoil design practise is for airfoils designed with the assumption of two dimensional flow. Most of the airfoil performance data is taken in windtunnels where the flow is made to be as two dimensional as possible. Low aspect ratio deltas operate in their own tip vortices where there are major components of spanwise flow over the whole wing. Under these conditions the intent of the airfoil designers does not apply and neither does the wind tunnel data published for the airfoils. To my knowledge, no airfoils have been designed for or measured under the conditions that model deltas produce. The only recourse, so far, is the trial and error approach to airfoil selection for low aspect ratio deltas. All we have to go on is a consensus of which airfoils seem to work best of the ones that have been tried.

The differences in airfoil performance in model deltas are not easy to see because so much of the performance is determined by the low aspect ratio and sweepback which dilutes any differences in various airfoils' affect on performance.

what is it you do ollie? you know far too much about what air does. we dont need an aerodynamics forum, just an ask ollie page, i even seen you recomended for answers :D

Unstable -> SPAD! What makes these coroplast things fly so well? (4/10/2002 8:34:41 PM)

just a though.... has anyone tried a spad twin??? it would make an excelent trainer for twin flying.... practice engine outs without worry :)... if someone has tried it please post a link... if not I may jtry that after I have some more flight time under my belt

Ollie -> What I Do (4/10/2002 8:43:15 PM)

While I'm waiting for the glue to set up, I prowl the aerodynamic forums looking for questions I think I can shed some light on. Sometime I spout off more than I really know and people like Mark Drela and Chad Northeast are kind enough to set me straight. My participation in these forums has turned into a compulsion that I haven't been able to break.

Cactus. -> SPAD! What makes these coroplast things fly so well? (4/10/2002 8:51:56 PM)

good thing you dont use cyno hey :D
i ment what do you do/did for a job, sommit that requires a white coat ( minus the straps ) comes to mind lol
i know a fair bit, more than most in our club i suspect, but for me its visual in my head how things work, i couldnt put number to things and thats clear in most of my replys, my C of G finder for deltas is my fave :D so simple lol damn, it uses numbers lol but simple for most halfwits to understand

This one was built using wiffle ball bats for the fuselages...the designer reports it's rock solid and flies great on two O.S. .15's

Ollie,

I, for one, hope you never lose your "compulsion" to respond to this forum. I appreciate the technical accuracy and detail in your explanations. And if you do lose that compulsion, e-mail me!

Regards,

Al

Not a twin spad, but a very easy one to build. I have found that it flies great as a glider or electric. If going electric though, add a couple carbon fibre spars. You can easily put one of these together in a night.
