I am a IT guy and thought this was interesting. Seems like everything comes back in full circle and the dumb terminal is coming back or at least Google is trying make sure it does anyway. And old idea with a new twist. Just wanted to see what your thoughts are.

I just love Google and the stuff they develop. Simple, ya know?

Besides, some of us NEED a dumb terminal

Thanks for sharing.

I'll stick with my PC with my firewall.  I don't want my personal business being spread around the web.  I did the dumb terminal thing at work doing development on Unix systems for several years.  I could protect my files from being snooped but anyone who has administrative privileges can get into those file any time they want.  NO THANKS.

For a netbook I could see it usefulness. Even if there was no on board hard drive you could use a USB thumb drive for storage. I think it'll have it's niche market once released but beyond netbooks I am hard pressed due to security to go beyond that.

I watched bits of a program about Google a while back.
There was the usual blah blah about how it's the best office in the world with its beanbags and lava lamps etc, but then they went on to interview a few people who work there about this whole privacy thing.
They asked pretty direct questions about Google's motives for storing people's browsing history and what they search for.
Of course the answers were all the same - it was so they could provide a better search engine.
Read between the lines - they see what the majority of searches are for, find companies who supply that product, and charge them more to advertise.

When asked if any private information was likely to fall in the wrong hands they of course got all fidgety and tried to dodge the question.
Oh no of course not.
They don't even have access to it themselves.
It's just stored for research purposes and to (again) provide a better search engine.

All in all, even if the program wasn't meant to, it made Google look like a ruthless horder of information, both public and private.

Google tried to make themselves out to be doing everyone a favour by providing the best search engine and didn't see anything wrong with being able to monitor every keystroke of millions of computers, and store that information.

So would I like to have all my stuff that's now on my harddrive stored at Google HQ?
Errrr.......No.

I thought the google OS was tailored just for things like netbooks, but not really full fledged laptops and PCs. They aren't trying to sell it as a Windows/Mac OS alternative, are they?

Isn't this what servers are for?

Stop looking at ThunderbirdJunkie like you don't have a server in your basement, too, shut up

a server??? try 3. one web - just crappy iis stuff for work, one media - streaming out to everywhere in my house, and one game bf2142 and CS but i am not currently playing those games more for lan parties. and yes i know i could run them all on one computer but why would i want to waste three good computers? haha

As for google OS... i like the idea of another company coming into the game, google is going after M$ and M$ is going after google - hence bing. anyways it is going to help out the end user a lot in the end.

In the near future I don't see a google OS replacing Windows 7 or OSX for desktops or heavy use laptops, but it seems like a viable alternative to linux when used on low end laptops and netbooks. Though frankly I'd still pay a bit more and have Windows 7 or OSX and all the features and productivity that come with them.
