I don't think they cover an incident where the saftey rules are not being adhered to.... you may want to check the AMA website.

I don't know for sure, but I was told that the AMA insurance is only good IF you are flying at an AMA sponsored EVENT ??

You put it well. OK, so they may be toys, but don't let the wives know, unless you buy them toys too. Mine is an educational tool to show the effectiveness of airfoils versus the effects of gravity.
Gravity usually wins! LOL :

Some people may call them toys, but they are actually machines. I would hate for some idiot to kill someone with one model, then screw it up for everyone else. I myself, and almost everyone at our club calls them airplanes, not toys. IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE RECKLESS, WITH OUT AMA, AND INSULTING, WHY DON'T YOU SWITHCH TO RC CARS, SMALL ELECTRIC ONES? WRXlovr!

Lets not get carried away now. They are toys. Yes they are machines, but as I said before, so is a jetski, and I think pretty much everyone can agree that a jetski is a toy. I don't see why you would be offended about a r/c plane being called a toy, and being scale replicas, there are plenty of planes that are designed as "fun fly's"-keyword fun.

I am not WRXlover, I am only fighting for the toy cause, not the non-ama cause.

Also, the comment that "people like you make the hobby unsafe." That is just a stupid comment, and you would have been better off keeping that to yourself. If you read around here, you would see posts about 1/4 planes that slammed into houses, with baby's sleeping 2 feet away. and planes that lost control that were trimmed out and nosed dived into parked cars 10 miles away. It happens, we lose control, let models get out of range, lose battery power, etc. It happens, it doesn't make the pilot a bad person.

Hundreds of people every year are injured on or by jetskis, which ARE toys, just like R/C planes. I think if you really stepped back and took a look at it, R/C pilots are more cautious than any other hobby/sport. You won't ever see on the news that some drunk R/Cer went out and maimed 5 people, yet that isnt the case for boating, atving, and other large toys.

Jet skiers and ATVers are sportsmen, aren't they? I mean they do have "sports events" don't they? Just like we may own a Pontiac Grand Pri, but we don't race it every weekend. AIGS: All In Good Sport. Ha, I made an acronym! Now I am king. :

I'm not upset about the toys, thats just my opionion. Where my fight is for AMA, AMA ownz. With out them, the sport would never have gotten very far, in fact probably these forums wouldn't even be here! And this thread would not exist! I am a firm believer in the AMA!

I am constantly being asked by friends and family to fly near parks and such close to home. I always refuse, it just takes one little thing to go wrong to cause alot of damage. We all have seen or heard of people who recieved 20-30 stiches from putting their hand through a prop. You multiple that by the speed of the aircraft and it does not take a rocket science to say you are headed for trouble.

I don't care if the plane is goine 45mph or 100 mph. Anyone on the recieving end will not be in very good shape.

It is obvious that MScooling has learned this lesson and that WRXlove is going to cause all of us alot of problems

I forgot to mention the reaction of the people as I went to collect the remains.

After franticly asking if anyone was hurt, the first guy I came up to asked me how much I spent on the plane.. Considering I just destroyed my plane, I was pretty pissed off at him for asking such as thing.

Now, if you went up to a car wreck, and asked the owner how much he bought his car for, wouldn't you think he would get kinda pissed off?

The really sad thing is that not only did that guy ask me for the price, but 4 others did also! In fact, it was the only thing they asked me. As I went to go get the keys to the tennis courts, they guy at the counter asked me how much I paid, and wouldn't give me the keys unless I let him see my radio. Yea, I think i could have choked him at the moment....

I guess they had no clue how bad the incident could have been. To them, it must have been a toy!

Folks, I have learned my lesson and never intended to create a flame fest among fellow hobbyists.

Fly happy, and fly safe!!

Just know that the AMA does everything it can to protect us as hobbyists, and the people around the areas we fly in. without it we probably wouldn't have as many airfields and clubs. Joining the AMA and a local club is the best investment you can make in the hobby. If you have kids insuring them for a dollar each is good advice. Have fun flying and remember joining the AMA is the responsible thing to do.

I keep reading "I always check around the field" and "I would never fly near people" as excuses not to get AMA insurance.

What you must understand is this: Take your airplane, fill it with gas, and time how long it can stay in the air wide open throttle.

Now imagine: If it loses radio after you first take off....how far do you think it can travel assuming it goest straight? Accidents are just that. Unplanned of course, but accidents happen. I personally would not want to be sued if my plane hit a person or a car on the highway or a house...

to each his own, I am not pushing AMA on anyone, just trying to educate a little.

If there was any alternative to the AMA, I would join. Yes, I do belong to the AMA and fly at a AMA field. The AMA use to be about modeling. Recently, it's somehow become a poorly run business. As for insurance? Read the fine print, my umbrella policy is twice the coverage for about the same cost. And it covers someone hurting themselve on my property.

The modern AMA would never survive in a competitive business environment. A prime example of "Misusing funds" is the boat pond at Muncie. All brought to you by an organization purporting to promote model aviation. Give me a break! In it's current state, the AMA is nothing more then a model tax. If model aviation magazine is so great; Then why aren't there more independent (non-member)subscribers?

Thank the AMA for the frequencies that we're using... Without their push, we may have been out to pasture with the FCC.... AMA is definately not a joke... IMO
