I am an AMA memebr for alost 20 years now. I belong to two AMA chartered clubs and have attended events at many others. The basic set of rules set down by the AMA is pretty much common sense put down on paper. The safety level still varies from club to club even if charted by the AMA. I fly at a "bandit"(non-ama) field as well sometimes and have seen both good and bad examples of safety at these fields as well. Safety is everyones responsability. The idea of inflicting injury to another human being should be enough motivation for us all to keep the hobby/sport as safe as we can. The idea that we might lose our field to fly in should also be a factor in how we conduct ourselves in our hobby. As for the AMA, you can take it or leave it, the safety concern should not be ignored either way!

Been lurking for a while, but I finally found where the action is!!

Toy airplanes? I think what most of us would like would be a little
appreciation for our hobby from non-participants (and maybe a little respect). Twenty years ago bicyclist were a big joke in their helmets and funny shorts; enter Lance Armstrong. Now everyone has a bike and helmet and yes, (unfortunately) those funny little shorts.

AMA? My club is not AMA. We carry our own insurance, this protects us and the land owner of our current flying field. Our safety rules (many are unwritten, just agreed upon) make most clubs look like free-for-alls. We do drink beer at the field, but don't let it interfere with your flying (or is it don't let the flying interfere with your drinking, can never remember). The mag is ok, there is more to the hobby than rc. The area AMA club apparently has some political issues - don't need that.

SAFETY? Once lived in a college dorm that would not let people keep their bicycles in their rooms. Why? Someone once caused a lot of damage with one. Even after the hall was used as a rifle range, people were allowed to keep firearms in the rooms. Go figure.

WRX? Well, he's into RC airplanes - could be potential to be an alright guy. Have to wait till I meet him.

WRX, you know as much about the AMA as you do about public relation's.nada , I can say this from experience, remember the obscene pm you sent me. Your a 17 year old mouthy punk, please tell us what possessed you to make a statement like that about the AMA,you have no experience with them at all, something else while I have your attention, your daddy's money and success is a reflection on him and the medical industry, not you by no mean's.

I am a ex farm dweller and now trapped in the city. I too would love to be able to live where I fly(Or fly where I live). I would also return to full size craft if I had a strip. Just too lazy to drive to my good paying job from 30 miles out instead of my 5 minute commute now. Maybe in the future though.

If at first you don't succeed try try again, this time you might get him or them. Drop it , its not worth the publicity.

WRXLovr: I fly those "non toy" real aircraft. 130,000# C-130s. In the operational world we balance risk (your "toy" landing in a parking lot and totalling a new SUV) with the benefit, not flying at an approved field and without insurance.
What would you have done if your 5 year old were at the pool? Bet you'd be more than a little p!@#$ed
