I just threw a new Fox .15 in my shrike, took off, engine died in the air so I landed. Messed around with the needle, took it back up, got into a bad situation and lost sight of it behind some trees.

I killed the engine, pulled up, and hoped for the best.... Whack!

Knowing there were houses behind those trees, I ran to the crash site. It nosed dived into a tennis court, about 10 feet away from a pool filled with kids/parents.

I asked someone what exactly happened, and he told me it went above and around the pool about 10 feet, then dived into the tennis court. I picked up the remains and got out of there quickly before any cops came, and they did later....

Thank god no one was hurt, but I think it's time to get some AMA insurance. People in Virginia love to sue..

Just get with an AMA sponsored club and use their field to make your life easier

I think you would be a fool to fly without it. All it takes is one bad accident and you hurt a lot of hobbyists. If it wasn't for the AMA, you would have fewer channels with a lot more chance for interference and devistating results.
That is only one good arguement for the AMA, there are a lot of others.
What is your gripe with the AMA?

What's your problem with the AMA? It's cheap insurance and the magazine alone is worth the cost.

I live in Montclair VA, near Dumfries/Woodgride. It's about 25 mins away from DC if there is no traffic, LOL!

There is this school about 4 miles away from where I live, and it has a huge soccer field. The field was enclosed by a bunch of trees and I never checked to see what was on the other side.

The closest AMA sponsored club was a good hour drive and was located at Fort Belvoir. After 911, they figured that R/C planes could be used by terrorists and shut the field down
they treat these toys like there full scale f-16s
Tell ya' what. Why don't you come by the club field next weekend. I'll fly one of my "toy" 40 size sport planes at you wide open throttle, say 75 mph. You can duck or run, then we'll talk about whether they should be taken seriously.

Okay? :

I thought soccer fields were a standard size!
That field sounds very similar to one at a local park. It contains a couple of soccer pitches and is almost totally surrounded by trees. The only relatively safe plane to fly in this situation is a park flyer or electric no bigger than speed 400 size. Then the plane can be flown within the confines of the field and therefore be over a known landscape.

Looks like you have two options:
1. Find the nearest AMA site and be willing to travel, or
2. Convert to flying electric parkflyers.

You've no business flying high speed glow planes on public land in a suburban area. I hope you've learned your lesson from this incedent...

Anybody that respects this hobby knows that R/C aircraft are not toys. If that is how you feel, maybe you should go back to paper airplanes and styrofoam gliders. Obviously you have not heard or seen the damage, injuries or deaths that these "TOYS" can cause.
Go back to your sand box, please!
