I'm curious if anyone has ever tried anything like this. Basically the intention is to build an open-wheel vehicle (one based on a RTR/Kit truck, buggy, truggy, etc.) solely for the purpose of straightline speed on a perfectly flat, level track. The idea I was toying around with was to take a ST like the rustler that has no rear toe-out and run it 'backwards'. So you have the drive wheels in front, rear wheels are used only for steering, motor in front of the wheels and a battery that is pretty far forward in the body. Lower the shocks, probably leave the wheelie bar on to protect the motor and the motor mount in the event of a crash and to stop it from bottoming out. The problem most trucks like the rustler have is they are wheelie prone and unstable when you get up into the 70+ mph range. So a 'reversed' setup like this would be front-wheel drive and have most of the weight in front, not have to worry about wheelies, be more resistant to turning at extreme speed and so on. Anyone ever tried something bizarre like this?

When I got fast in reverse with my slash it wobbles...that might be due to a weak steering servo though.

It will be uncontrollable with rear wheel steering at any mid to high speed.

I agree with rebuilder, stability at high speed will be very hard to maintain with rear wheel steering. With front wheel steering the front of the car has to pull away from it's direction of momentum for the vehicle to turn. With rear wheel steering the back of the car will be swinging forward somewhat (in the direction of the momentum it already has) and it will be very easy to spin out ("J" turns anyone ). You may be able to reduce this with low steering rates or a lot of expo. If all that is needed during the run is very small corrections to the line it may work.

You may run into another problem. Instead of the torque overwealming the weight of the front and pulling a wheelie, it may simply break traction and spin the tires.

Either way, if you try it definitely post your results.

Basically the idea is that I won't be turning once I get up to speed. Only going perfectly straight. Maybe some really small adjustments but the track itself is perfectly straight. Dual rates on the controller if that's what it takes.

Normally you try to build a truck that has 'good handling', ie. that can turn well and at speed if you want it to. But this is kinda the reverse, trying to build a truck that is engineered to go straight and straight only (not turn at all). So that diff and everything would be locked.

Also I should have pleanty of time to get up to speed. Should be able to feather that throttle and keep that front traction good.

With a small servo horn, bearings in the bellcranks, dual rate, and quality ball joints you would eliminate much slop and sensitivity. It should be stable. I am assuming you will lengthen the frame.

It might work with very low ratio steering, and a looooooooooooooooooooong wheelbase.

The biggest problem I see is in the geometry of the front suspension. It is set up to go forward, if you go in reverse, it becomes highly unstable. The caster is set negative to make it want to go strait and it makes it easier to drive. Turn that around and you get th opisite effect. Interesting theroy though.

personally id like to see it done, sounds like it could be a type of vehicle to set record speeds with, etc. you're going in the right direction

Well, so far, everyone has forgotten one thing.... the Rustler is normally rear wheel drive, you flip it, and it is now front wheel drive.......... Sooooooooooooo it is impossible for it to do a wheely....the rear (use to be front) wheels are free wheeling.

I wasnt aware he was trying to do wheelies...........................just to go really fast in a straight line.

who forgot that? and it could still blow over backwards from the speed.

like everybodies said you'd need next to NO slop in your sterring and you'd almost need a locked diff...

imo you'd be better off with a 1/8 buggy with a wing up front and a locked center and no rear drivetrain parts
