Radio shack has a 7.2v 3000mah NiMH battery. I need to replace the one I am using in my Cessna. This battery is the same size, but I don't know much about the quality of their batteries. The price is comparable to others I found online at RC sites. Does anyone have any info on RS batteries, like what is the brand of the battery they use?

Thanks
Bob

I'm gonna hate to burst your bubble... I was buying some NiCads years ago for the company that I work for... in part of the discussion, I asked the sales rep what they do if they have a batch of batteries that won't pass their QA. Their reply was that they sell them to Radio Shack.

I even worked for them for a while, so I got to know their products pretty good.

personally, I don't use RS equipment for any critical items.... I don't trust them. I've seen the inside of too much of their gear....

That's just my personal opinion...

Bob

Before I retired, Radio Shack bought their batteries from the lowest bidder that would meet their specs, which were not all that difficult. I doubt if their policy has changed. Most consumers that buy batteries are clueless about performance and buy on price and convenience.

Actually the 3000mah packs are custom manufactured for radio shack in China. So are the 3000mah packs you buy from almost all other companies.

They work quite well, and though perhaps not to a racer, are indistinguishable in terms of performance from 3000mah battery packs from RC comapanies.

Also,

With very few exceptions, all companies buy their stuff from the lowest bidder that meets their specs.

I have a couple of these 3000mAH RS battery packs, a couple of 3000mAH packs I bought from Tower Hobbies, and some 2000 and 1900 packs. While I can easily tell the difference in performance and run times between the 3000 and 2000 packs, I can't tell the difference between the RS 3000s and the other 3000s.

I think the key thing here is 'meets their specs'. From what has been said Radio Shack's 'specs' are not too hard to measure up to...other companies specs might be a bit harder to meet.

IOW...Me, use Radio Shack stuff, I don't think so.

Well maybe those batteries suck in theory, but in practice, they are great. I get great run times and power from them. Like I said, I have two other 3000 packs...a Peak Racing Powerplant Pro and an Epic 3000.

Now I haven't done scientific tests or anything, but all my 3000s perform the same.

To be fair...the RS batteries were more expensive (maybe not more than then Peak Racing if you factor shipping), but the convenience factor can't be beat. There are five Radio Shacks within five minutes of me and all have these batteries.

For cars and starter motors RS batteries are probably fine. Can't gamble with them in planes that become high speed flying missles when the battery fails.

What kind of failures are you talking about?

Premature drain or something?

I don't mean to make this an argument...I am not a battery expert or anything...but I've never had any problems with my Radio Shack batteries. They give me consistent performance time after time.

I'm running an HPI Super RS4 with a 17 turn double and I get 8 - 9 minutes of run time per 3000mAh battery, whether it be Radio Shack or Peak Racing or Epic. I get about 5 - 6 minutes with a 2000mAh NiCad.

Both the Radio Shack and other brand 3000 batteries deliver awesome and consistent speed. When they die, they die rapidly and deliver linear performance up to that point. NiCads, I've noticed, die a little more gradually, and that last minute is spent sucking wind.

The point of this is not a NiCad vs NiMH argument, but just to express the point that Radio Shack 3000 packs are just as good under the circumstances that I use them as other brands.

I know nothing about airplanes or the demands they place on batteries, but I imagine if the RS batteries perform well in a touring car, they would do just fine in an airplane. It's not like they've ever cut off unexpectedly or acted unpredictably.

Mike
