"I don't think it's running right. I'd better land"

So I decided to take "one last flight". BTW, don't ever do that. Anyway, flying my Extra around (see my avitar) and it seems like it's losing power in vertical flight. Probably too lean. So I say to my buddy "I don't think it's running right. I'd better land." I get a little down wind to line up with the runway, make the turn to final, and "PUH", it dies. OK, I'm a little low, over the jungle, but if I play it just right I can at least get it close. I'm calm, watch the airspeed, and just then a tree that I saw and was of course avoiding, leaned over about 20', stuck a branch out and GRABBED MY PLANE!!! I couldn't believe it!! It purposely moved in to my flight path and got my plane!!

So the branch went up to the spar in the right wing and it hung there, about 3000' up. OK, maybe more like 40'. Took 2 hours to talk the tree in to giving up it's prize. I had to promise to put another one up there some day. Of course it did give up eventually, but took some extra swats at my beautiful model on the way down. It took more damage on the way down than it did on impact.

Oh well, a motivated modeler could have it up by next weekend. I think it will take me a couple of weeks. Has anyone ever seen an Extra 300S Bi-plane?

Hey Jet,

No freakin' way. You see, I leave for 5 minutes and you crash. That was such an awesome plane. I'm sure you'll get it back in the air asap. I'll be glad to help. Just let me know.

Damn those trees and their automatically extending branches!!

Mike

Remember the scene in Poltergeist (sp?) where the tree comes through the window and grabbs the little boy? It was just like that.

Actually, it was the same tree that Rocky put his big Giles into last month.

I know what you mean about those trees. Look under the the thread "Meet Jack" and look for a blue ultrasport with the wings detatched. I flew "full throttle" "between" two limbs. It looks so easy in the movies. But at least my plane shot through the tree and didn't take any remenants of it. I did not rebuild. The crash that hit the ground after was what did it in for me.
check it out.

Stories like these are exactly why most of us in Alaska are all for the responsible harvesting of trees...even clearcutting when necessary.

These days I look at beautiful pastures and think, "I would cut down all those trees first!".

It's not only the trees that you have to worry about, but the balsa wood magnets that are in the ground. Now get to close to the ground and they will grab your plane also, and we all know what happens then, now don't we????

Which is why we are in large part, unopposed to large scale mineral mining operations. Anything to rid the earth of these obstacles.

You know when you see a land fill and think, "man that's perfect" things are a little out of hand.

Billy, it's interesting you should say that...our only land site locally is our municipal landfill. They made a 250 foot gravel strip for us. Our strip sits on top of countless tons of safely capped asbestos debris! Also has the best view in town...it is up on a hill overlooking the narrows. (What's that...an arm growing out from behind my neck??)

We fly mainly from water though.

Now you have something....
"Billy all you think about is RC planes. Is there something wrong with you?"
"Honey it's the landfill. It has afflicted me! It's not my fault!"
"There's no wind. I must go fly!" - door slams

Seeing your title I just had to tell a joke.

The last words you will ever hear out of a redneck...

"Hey, watch this"

"Here, hold my beer"
