Chad: You inspired me to make a vacuum former. Now I can make those servo / linkage covers I always wanted to. Im going to use an 8" electric burner for the heat. Burner was $6.99. I threw this little diag together. Rest of the parts was $10 and there is enough to make two or three. Found some peg board that has holes that are 2/3 smaller then regular.

Looks good, give it a go and let us know how it works. Make sure your burner is capable of heating the entire sheet fairly evenly. If you get a hot spot in the middle it may prove to be a problem (and it may not, just have to try it!). Looking forward to an update on your progress, Chad.

Where'd you find the burner? Any more/better description on it? I like it better than an oven....

As for the plastic, I looked in the phone book, found a plastics place, and they have .030 in stock, as well as lot's of other sizes...even have a bunch of old coroplast 2mm, for my SPAD's...

Yes, keep us posted on your progress...I have a 33% Extra canopy to do!!!

There are a couple of plastic supply houses in Rochester that will sell you what you need. I am originally from there and when visiting family I bought quite a bit. I think they usually specialize in plexiglass and signing making material. I found them in the local yellow pages.

For clear applications, try 2 and 3 liter soda bottles, the plastic is tough and really easy to form. and cheap...my favorite part.

I made a vacuform box a couple of months ago. I have had exellent luck using an oven for heating. I place the frame that holds the plastic in a wire rack that holds it about 5" above the regular oven racks. Set the temp to 350. Once the oven it hot, I place the plastic/frame in the oven for about 3 minutes or until it sags pretty good. I use a dowel rod to prod it and test for softness. Once it is soft, use a oven mit to grab it and set it on the vacuum box. It's ready to be pulled off in about 2 seconds. I will post pictures of my setup later this afternoon.
