I just built up my second venus---first one took the plunge a couple months back. Anyhow, I had an OS70 FS on it the first time propped 13x6 and it was a good setup. It was strong and good vertical and fast but just not fast enough. I decided that the four stroke was not exactly what I wanted out of the venus the first time around and I wanted more speed so I opted for the two stroke and put on the 61fx.

WOW----I love it!! I am at 5lbs 14oz total weight at recommended CG I had to add 3/4 oz of tail weight right in front of the tailwheel bracket, 3/4 oz to the right wingtip to counter the muffler lateral CG and put the battery under the tail pushrods to get it to work. I used a Hayes motor mount because it was slightly lighter than the GP and mounted the motor thrust washer at 4 1/2 instead of 4 15/16 to bring it back a bit and still leave room for the fuel lines. I mounted the motor inverted and put a Dubro 12 oz fuel tank in to compensate the bigger motor (stock tank is slightly more than 9oz). I am getting about 10 minutes of full throttle flight out of it. I also glassed the wing joint for more strength.

This sucker is awesome. POWER POWER and MORE POWER!!! FAST FAST and FAST. I started with a 12x6 prop and broke the motor in there then flew it with the 12x6 for a few tanks. I then went on to an 11x8, 11x9, 11x10, 12x7, 12x8, 13x6, and 13x8 prop testing and I ended up at 13x6 with the stock muffler and no baffle. I used APC and Master Airscrew props for the testing. The 11 inch props were all Master Airscrew standard black nylon and they were not good right from the get go--I did not even bother trying the APC in 11 inch. The 12 inch props in both APC and MA were good and the 12x7 was the best of the three loading up the motor well. The 13x8 was just a bit too much load and slowed the RPM's a bit and the 13x6 was the best. APC vs. MA in the 13x6 did not seem any different with taching and performance so I will use either one (I left the APC on as I tested the MA first).

I am taching the 61fx with the 13x6 props at max ground rpm at around 11,900. I have not yet gotten a 12,000 rpm reading on the ground, but I have only about two gallons through the motor so it is not fully broken in yet. I wanted to wait for this testing but the 61fx was running so well I could not resist.

I suppose I cannot really say what the venus fly's like with total weight down near the 5lb mark because my first venus with the four stroke was up in the 5lb 9oz mark. I suppose I also can't comment on how it is with a smaller two stroke as far as power and speed because I have not been there either. What I can say is that the 61fx on the venus is AWESOME. My buddy has a YS.63 he is putting in his venus and after he saw my 61fx he was drooling and debating a switch. I think for now he is going to finish building with the .63 just to see how it does.

Knife edge is awesome and fly's solid with a tad (not much) up elevator. Inverted requires about one of the painted stick notch's on my Futaba 9C down elevator to maintain level flight.

As far as wing loading and all that with the extra weight over the OS70fs I had on it and how it flies. Not much different at all. One thing it does do is torque to the left more (of course) but it is only noticeable if I nail the throttle on a take off. Other than that it makes for very easy left turning hammer heads. I debated mounting the motor dead center on the fuselage. I just didn't. It may have helped but it's really not a big deal as it is. I can tell during landings that there is a little more weight there, but the landings with the 61fx and no flaps are no less graceful than they were with the OS70fs. I am now going to do a bit of messing around with getting the flaps right.

I had a dead stick with it today and I had a ton of glide. I actually under estimated it and could have done a couple sharp turns or slipped it before I landed but I was in a tail wind and about 100 yards out when the engine quit and on a small runway. I did not want to risk it. Of course the engine quit at full throttle so I had a lot of speed to go along with it. The glide when prepping for a powered landing is not much different than with the 70fs. It does sink just a tad quicker and requires a bit more on the elevator.

Moral of my story is that the 61fx is an awesome combo with the venus. I truly love it to bits. My goals with the airplane were power and speed in the excess. I am pleasantly suprised that the 61fx was not much different in flight characteristics than the OS70fs. And since the 70fs is a recommended engine from GP and the 61fx with the extra weight fly's about the same as the 70 with even more power than I think it is a winner.

Now if anyone knows where I can get a muffler for the 61fx that produces more power and won't hit the wing, or knows of a diverted I can redirect a tuned pipe above the wing I would be even happier.

My brother bought one with the new OS 50 SX, would that be to weak?

I think it will fly great with this combo.

I have seen one fly with an Irvine .53 and it had loads of power. A 50 SX will most likely do very well indeed.
