Status: offline 		This thread is dedicated to the Dave Platt T-28 Trojan aircraft.

Please join us in the building of these fine aircraft used by many US Navy and US Air Force pilots during their flight training. We hope to share what we know while learning from you during our construction process. We also want to thank the Oklahoma Museum of Flying for allowing us the access to photograph their full scale T-28 build project for our use for scale details. Here is a new item from Sierra Gaint Scale.

Status: offline 		which platt model he had one in rcm in the late 60's that became the early platt/pica 1/6 t-28 and I think he has a larger current one.pica had a 1/5 t-28 but do not think platt had anything to do with it's development as he had sold the company before

Status: offline 		The Pica formerly Dave Platt, was the 1/7th.  The one Dave Platt has now is the 1/6th scale.  You must buy the plans, cowl and canopy, and cut the parts out.  I had a custom cutter cut my complete kit.  Will get sarted builing in the next week or so.  The 1/5th was put out by someone else.  Not sure who.

Status: offline 		This is a Platt 1/6th scale I modeled a few years ago. I cut the kit and added the dive brakes. I'm glad to see Sierra has made retracts as Dave's gave me all kinds of headaches.

Here's the info I got from Sierra about the retracts

We now have a set of retract for the Platt T-28
They are $650.00 for the three gear set.
We have a couple of sets ready to go now.

Should know in a week when I will (hopefully) be starting mine

I can see this being a great thread... also on Daves website he mentions lengthing the wood for the retract attaching... just something to keep in mind

How did you do the dive brake, canopy and how did you hinge your control surfaces.  I'm starting on my Dave Platt 1/6th scale this weekend.  How much did it weigh.  Did you add any right trust.  Platt does not call for it, but plenty of down thrust.  I measured at least 5 degrees.  How did you compensate for the short nose moment.  I built the Pica T-28 and had to add 1 1/2 to 2 lbs nose weight.  I really don't want to add weight if I don't have to.

I,ve wanted a 1/6th T-28 for years and plan on ordering parts from Dave for a future build, I,ve also considered the Vance Mosher 1/6th T-28.
I,ve simply got to many projects on the go right now to take on another one.

Status: offline 		HI Boyd, I built the Platt T-28 about 6 years ago and it ended up at 22 lbs.I built the model just as Dave's instructions called for. I don't remember but didn't he show offset on the rudder? If you look at the images you can see that there was no extra weight that was used. The dive brakes were drawn on the plan constructed from there. I hope these images help. I did build 2 of the original 1/8th Platt T-28s before the plans were sold to Pica but that was back in the 1970s and don't remember if I had to add nose weight.

Thanks for the pics.  Excellent detail.  I have already bought the retracts from Robart.  I did not know that Sierra had put some out.  I hate to spend another $700.00 at this time.  I will power mine with the FUJI BT-50EI (46.50cc).  Is the dive brake connected to the flaps?  Neat idea on the gear doors with the wire to retract them when the gear comes up.  I noticed that your cylinders are close to the engine.  Have you had any problems with the heat mealting them.  I intend to put them on mine also.  Do you have any pics on your sliding canopy?  What are your hinges made of.   Thanks for your help.

It's under the build section, go to wing and there will be a photo with a caption labeled "The hardwood gear rails need to be lengthened to add strength"
I think Daves plans show a shorter set of gear rails.

Status: offline 		Boyd, The dive brakes are on a seperate servo and not connected to the flaps.The Williams Bros. Cylinders were far enough away from the SuperTiger's that there was no problem with heat. An image of the rails for the canopy is enclosed. They can be purchased from Dynamic Balsa. As I remember all the hinges except for flaps were Robart. Platt has a pattern for flap hinges and I made them out of 1/16 G-10 Phenolic.

Thanks.  You have been a great deal of help.  I went to the build site Larry showed me.  This has some good info also.  This will be my first at such a degree of scale.  Although I build scale, I have not gone to this much length to accomplish a better looking scale model.   It won't look as good as yours, but I'm not out to win any scale contests.  How did you do the rivet detail?  I may try this out.

Status: offline 		Boyd, I did the rivets on the T-28 with drops of Rc56 glue from a syringe. The scale spacing was determind and I cut an 18" strip of 1/32 plywood and marked off the spacing with a ruler. The plywood strip which will bend around curves is then used to mark where the glue drops go.

Thanks for the info.  What is the Rc56 glue?

Larry,

I noticed on the build thread for the T-28 it recomened the nose gear for the Robarts for the nose gear to be the 640RS which is the 105 degree.  I chose the the 642 HDRS which is 95 degrees.  The reason I chose this was that the plans show the nose gear in the fully retracted position to be at 95 degrees.

Also, the mains are recomended to be the 635 RS which are the 90 degree.  I chose the 636 RSLP which is 85 degrees because the wing dihedral is approximalty 85 degrees. 

I'm not sure why  they recomend theirs as apposed to what I chose.  I would be interested in why they did this. 

You will have to adjust the angle in which you put both gears in anyway.  Just a thought,

I have never used Seirra gear before, but it looks like they put out a very good product.

One thought, not pro or con, but with the Seirra gear is specific to the model.  Robart is generic.  It can be used for just about any model if you choose not to build another T-28.

My experience with Robart in the last 15 years has been very good.  They have a great technical support and can custom make your gear.  I had them build a nose gear for my Skypirate which is from a Claud McCollough plans.

I want to thank the Oklahoma Museum of Flying, Larry Butler and Steve Keesey for their donation of a 3 foot by 2 foot (3/32 inch) phenolic piece for the hinges.  This was a left over from thier building the realt T-28.  It is used for the casing of the wing tanks.

Thanks for the info but I wanted you to know that the Avenger we are building at work has Sierra retracts and the workmanship is par none. Excellent and I would reccomend them to anyone. The pix that Darrell sent me looks awesome, and I know the detail and moveable parts will work with little or No drama.
Will keep you posted on when my Trojan is here (better be for xmas )

When you get the retracts from Sierra for the T-28, let me know your thoughts.  Although the gear is specific, I will always have a T-28.  Once I decide to build a particular model, It will alwasy be a staple in my hanger.  So when I decide to built another one I will get the Sierra's.  As I had indicated earlier I wish I had known about the Sierra gear because I would have bought them to try them out.  But since I just laid out $700 for the Robarts I did not want to switch.  Besides, I'm starting the project this weekend and the wing will be first.  I could not wait for the gear to get here.  Thanks for your thoughts.
