I'm fixing to send out for a 96" Wing Mfg B-17 before they close down. But before I had gotten to do that, I saw a 112" B-17 in the "Bombers" forum in RC Warbirds.Com that was built by a guy by the name of John Kang. Does anybody know if this plane was a kit, or possibly a model with available components. Seems like evey kit I seen out there (except the Wing kit) starts at 120"+ Any info about this kit, or any other available smaller sized B-17 kit would be appreciated. (The Royal/ Marutaka kit is too small) Thanks.-Randall

Well, if you want to save a few dollars, I know Bob Holman has a B-17G at about 120 inch span. All wood construction.

And don't forget to mention the Don Smith, American Eagle, and Guillows B-17 kits too.

(haha)

There, I think we covered all the sizes and kits except the 112" John Kang's model I'm interested in.

Hey Randy! John Kang is my flying partner. His 112" B-17 is the fourth one he has built and it is a spectacular flyer. Jon is 69 years old and was born and raised in Korea and was inturned during WWII and was being trained as a Kamakazi pilot when the war ended. He has been in the US for about 18 years and is one of the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet. His B-17 career started with a 73" Royal B-17 that was rebuilt a dozen times before he finally learned to fly it. He built a second one off of the same plans and it's fifteen years old and still flying. We both wanted to get into bigger airplanes so he drug his trusty old Royal plans over to Kinko and had them enlarged until he had a 96" wing. He built that plane and it flew beautifully but was involved in a midair that destroyed the plane he hit and allowed him to limp his B-17 back home. He thought he had it all repaired but if suffered a wing failure and crashed and was destroyed. That B-17 was done up like Fuddy Duddy with the aluminum with yellow cowls and rudder. Not discouraged he went back to kinko and had the Royal plan blown up even further to get the 112" model that is pictured on the RCWarbird site. He purchased four newSuper Tiger motors for it and a new set of Spring air retracts. I talked him into adding split flaps to it and he had the plane ready for flight in two months. He hand built every single piece of it with the exception of the fuselage formers which I cut for him on my band saw. He had cut all of the wing ribs by hand and the plane is covered with Coverite fabric and painted with Chevron Perfect paint. The bigger the B-17s got the better they flew and this plane is the best flying yet. He flies it inverted and does the coolest looking climbing rolls you have ever seen. The four exhaust trails just braid themselves as he climbs and I've seen him do ten consecutive rolls. The plane does them with ease. He probably has two hundred flights on it and in that time has taken a engine and necelle off on a sprinkler that he said he didn't see and has removed the main landing gear a couple of times but he always has it ready to fly again the next weekend. Last summer we went for broke and built a Don Smith 138" B-17 and we hope to have it flying this summer. The build is done and the gear is installed but we still need to install the engines and get it ready to paint. I fiberglassed this model and we plan on painting it in the Sentimantal Journey silver with the light blue rudderand cowl trim. I'd be happy to answer any questions about Jon's plane.

Jack,
Thanks a bunch for the input. Sounds like a very interesting plane. And a very interesting pilot too. John Kang must also be a lot braver and faster then me. Where he can build from a blown-up plan and have it completed in a few months, it would take me two years. I know because I've been there, done that, and don't want to do it again. I was hoping this 112" bird would have been a kit. Oh well. Guess I'll stick with the 96" Wing B-17.

Appreciate it -Randall
