I picked up a 4*40 prebuilt kit at a swap meet and don't know where the CG is. Anyone have the CG on this plane? I thought of ballancing it at the spar behind the leading edge but the wing is not the original build up wing. It's foam with balsa sheeting. I mounted an OS 40 FX and it seems real nose heavy. This is my first low wing plane, whats the best way to ballance it (ie: a little nose or tail heavy, or just right) ??? I'm used to flying my 40 size trainer that is a little nose heavy. I know that works for trainers but not sure on low wings. Thanks for any response.

I am building a 4*40 right now. Will check my plans when I get home. Not sure how much this will help though if your wing is not the original. If you don't have one, get a Great Planes CG Machinne......they are great. I think the plans call for it to be balanced upsidedown. Very slightly nose heavy would be the way to go if not "just right". Avoid tail heavy. Some of the 3D guys go a little tailheavy I think, but as a general rule, stay away from tail heavy airplanes.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, that would help knowing how far back from the leading edge Sig calls for the CG. I do have a GP CG Machine and I know I have to flip the plane, unlike my first two high wing trainers. I have the building and flying instructions for the 4*40, and where the sheeting ends on the leading edge looks real close to the original built-up wing. I bought the plane from an estate sale we had as a member passed on. From the amount of stuff he left behind, I'm sure he know what he was doing when he built this foam wing. I only had to cover it. I have been through this Sig 4* 16 page instructions and can't believe I can't find a CG measurement in it. Unless I'm overlooking it, it must be on the plans.
Any input on how the foam will fly differant welcomed.

Balance point range per plans is 3" back from the leading edge
plus or minus 3/16" in front of or behind that point. Hope that helps with your effort. Keep us posted.

Thanks a bunch Scale Dreamer. I couldn't wait, had to try my first low wing flight. OOOOOOOOOOOOOOh the fun I had. It was windy, mostly down the runway at about a 25-40 degress angle side wind. I taxied it down, turned it around, gave it about 1/4 throtle and saw the tail come up before I pulled the throttle back. Turned it around again and said, "What the heck", gave it half throttle watched the tail lift and punched it with a little elivator. Took off like a dream. Had very little adjustments to make. I love this plane. I pulled off two rolls when I only planed on one.
I honestly thought the low wing plane would be more difficult. I have a Spitfire 40 ARF I repaired, after flying this 4*, I cant wait to take it out.

Yeap, 3 inches from the leading edge which is also the main spar. JT
