Got the stabs mounted and the elevators hinged and permanently attached. I am going to redo my trim tabs, and they just dont look "right". Checked the throw...Roy calls for 30 degrees up and 25 down. I have 40 up and about 25 down. Looking forward to moving forward!

I got the elevator pushrod supported in two places before connecting to the servo. Movement is smooth. I built a new fin trailing edge to allow for the elevator control horn to be concealed. Got the fins temporarily mounted to the fuse. I checked the distance from the tip of the fin to the tip of the stab and was rewarded to find that both planes had the exact same measurements. Test fitting of the rudder. I built new trim tabs and I like them better but am not completely satisfied yet.

Well the RCU site seems to be having it's upload issues again! I have finally got up the nerve to make the LE for the fin. I enlarged my BT plans, which show the LE. I have shown my high tech tracing table. Some pix show the template, the shaped balsa LE, with balsa filler, and then mounted on the plane temporarily. I am hoping this will mimick the full scale so the fabric won't "dip" between the fin ribs.

I replaced the clevis on the elevator control rod with a ball joint, with a 4-40 bolt and nut, secured with red loctite. I also routed the steering cable to the tailwheel. And, my wheels arrived from Shaun at Yellow Aircraft. For the price I could not find a better wheel. One is on a Shindin retract and one is on a Sierra retract.

Shindins look pretty nice. I need a set for my Y/A Spitfire and have been trying to decide between Robart, Sierra, and Shindin.

Jeff.
I have a set of Lenny's gear for my upcoming BT project. If you decide to go that route, see if you can specify the axle diameter. If you are going to use the YA wheels, you'll want 1/4" axles, or use a bushing to make it fit the smaller axle. I may try to retrofit a 1/4" axle on mine. Here's pic of my set, which have the 3/16 axles. Lenny is easy to work with and his prices are great.

Well I could not think of a reason to put off installing the stringers. Just a question of what has to happen first. I attached the fin permanently and then extended the stringers into the fin post to add extra strength. I then plotted out the location of the starboard access panel and built a frame around it. Here are a few pix.

I'm sheeting the areas on the bottom of the fuse now, in preparation for the ventral fin. The plans are a bit scarce in detail on this point, so I've referred to my BT plans and some friend's builds on the other site. I've got the center sheeting done and am will be extending the side sheeting in the area bordered by the red rectangle. I've also bought some .003 Aluminum and after annealing it I'll try my hand at making metal fairings for the tail.

I've got one of the fuses sheeted to the point where I can put on the ventral fin. No such thing as a straight line on the fuse!

I had to ask some advice concerning assembling the YA Spit wheels I ordered. I took the advice and screwed one half of the wheel to a piece of plywood, which I then fastened in a vice. I then soaped the rim and threads and screwed the other half, with the tire, onto the secured rim. Worked like a charm!

I love the look of the Sierra gear, especially the nut and cotter pin that hold the wheel on. I did some looking and found some bolts and castle nuts at Aircraft Spruce and Specialty. I then chucked the bolt in my drillpress and held a dremel tool with a cutting disk up to it and cut the head off the bolt. Then I put the castle nut on and adjusted it to the proper depth and cut the curved front and a few threads off the bolt. After test fitting in my Shindin gear I cut some more off. All I need now is the cotter pins and some spacers.

Working on the tail wheel and rudder access panel. I've estimated size from pictures and cut through the stringers. Framed the opening and will install gussets in the corners. I'll make the hatch out of balsa backed by thin ply, countersink the holes and it should look pretty good. I'll have to cover the hatch as I'm making it to make sure that the covering material doesn't mess up with fit. The sheeting on the tail is an area where the plans deviate from the full scale pretty noticeably. I intend to carry the fuse stringers over the balsa, maybe with an extra layer of solartex, to simulate the stringer location on the full size.
I also discovered I'd put the rudder horn on the wrong rib, so I moved them up closer to the scale location. I lucked out and punched a hole in the balsa just in the right place. When this is covered with an aluminum fairing I'll try to make a cleaner exit hole for it.

Worked on fitting a hatch to the tail access panel. Added square gussets to the corners, built them out from the back of the opening with two layers of 1/8" light ply. Then used a paper template to start a pattern for the hatch. The hatch base is 1/32 ply, and it is faced with 1/8" contest balsa. Holes drilled, countersunk in the balsa. Hatch fits for now, will have to do some adjusting for solartex when it's covered.

I've been thinking about the ventral fin, not quite satisfied with the plan spec'd 1/2" balsa. Last night as I was about to fall asleep I thought about making one out of balsa sheet and today gave it a try. I think it will work.
Edit: Weight of the solid balsa rear ventral fin was 7 grams, the new ones are 3 grams.

Thanks Casey! Got a trial fit of the front ventral fin now. I'm thinking I'll cover the ventral fin soon to make the covering chore a bit easier.

Daddysam,
I'm enjoying watching this build...great job! I was wondering what diameter of steel rod you are using for your elevator joiner (I think you said 3/8")? I am using the same set-up for my Ziroli Mustang but I keep having second thoughts that i am using too light a gauge of wire. I don't think it will fail, but i am concerned about fludder if the rod starts twisting. I kinda wish i had gone with a servo per elevator half for the redundancy.

I am using the 3/8" inch joiner the plans called out. I was tempted to use 5/32" because it is so much easier to work with. Making those bends in the 3/8" wire was a challenge for me. The wire seems plenty stout and I would think that the elevator would self destruct before the wire did. I thought about doing the redundant elevator servos like my TFGS Corsair uses but I'd still be relying on piano wire unless I wanted pushrods to exit the fuse and attach to control horns. I hope to fly it in a scale like manner and I think with adequate hinging (threee large Robart hinge points per side) flutter won't be an issue. Only flight tests will show though. Glad you're enjoying the build!
Sam

Hmm! Make sure your assistants 'sorting' doesnt leave you a gift. Mines not allowed in the shop anymore. She thought motorcycle seats were for sharpening claws. Now she thinks the devil lives in the garage.

Sam,
Are you sure you are using 3/8" rod? I think you mean you used 3/16" rod since 5/32" is just a bit smaller diameter. I've got mine rigged up with 1/8" but I'm pretty sure I'm going to take it out and use at least 5/32". Wish I'd do things right the first time...rats! Thanks for replying to my question.

Whoops! Yep, 3/16", not 3/8"! I had to order special steering arms since the ones I had would only fit 5/32".
Sorry for the confusion!
As for my helper, Sgt. Bigglesworth doesn't spend too much time in my hobby area. The kids provide him with lots of entertainment!

Got some more of the sheeting done on the fuse underside and covered the rudders with Solartex. I need to plot out the fuse sheeting at the rear of the cockpit area and then cover the fuse bottom.

Doing some sheeting of the front fuselage. The former location makes accurate placement of the scale access hatches difficult to reference. So I just found a reference point and began measuring from BT's plans and started sheeting. A long process but one that you can see progress on. Here are some pix: Any ideas for a fuel filler/ignition switch location?

One of the issues I'm having with merging the BT plans with Roy's plans is that when I am measuring the access panels and plotting their location on the airframe I need to make sure to leave enough room for the wing fillet. When the fuse was stringered and then sheeted the stringers and sheeting in the area of the wing saddle extended below the wing saddle. I needed to sand that fuse sheeting to the proflile of the wing saddle so I can know for sure how much room is left for the fillet when I put in the access hatches.
So what follows is first the rough cutting of the wing saddle from the fuse sheeting, then because the spruce stringers are a bear to sand, I needed to plot the location of the cutout in the sheeting so I could use a razor saw to cut through the stringers, in order to remove a roughcut section of the fuse side in preparation for sanding (sorry for the run-on sentence).
I took a piece of control rod that was long enough to lay across the plywood fuse inner sides and then sharpened a point with a dremel tool. By holding in vice grips across the top of the ply fuse sides I could get it to line up on the balsa fuse sides. I got as close to the stringers as possilbe and used a small hammer to punch a series of holes with the rod. Then I sawed through the outermost and deepest stringers, and then connected the dots.
I use three different sanding tools: a standard Great Planes bar sander, a 1.5" dowel with sandpaper taped to it, and my favorite, a peice of aluminum stock with 80 grit on one side and 120 and on the other.
