Default 20YR OLD CURARE FLIES AGAIN

I recently traded a 20 yr old curare for a cmpro discuss glider. The curare was originally painted in a yellow and green scheme and showed
quite a bit of hangar rash. After a complete rub back and way too much filler I painted her in the original colours. Apparently this model has
quite a bit of history - was built for a gentleman in Darwin Aust, competed in the 89/90 Nats in Western Australia before being brought
down to South Australia where I picked it up.

Flew the curare last week and it flies like a dream - fast and smooth. Still mucking around with the elev/flap settings but hopefully
will fly it again early in the new year.

To everyone building one keep up the great work - the curare is a unique model.

Next build will be an Arrow with OPS60 once I get my bench cleared

Good to see another classic pattern plane flying in Adelaide,

What Club are you flying at ? , I am at CMFCI.

If you need Arrow help:-> let me Know , I am part way building one, Hopefully will be finished soon.

Having Two Arrows in Adelaide would be very cool.[8D]

Very nice. Do you have a photo of the bottom of the aircraft that you can post, please?

I am considering using the original scheme and I don't think that I have ever actually seen the underside.

FB,

Found it, thanks. It's not what I imagined. Kindof a puke green. [:'(]

Hey Mitch,

I kind of have to agree with you about the color of the bottom of the plane, but you'll have to admit. There is absolutely no way anyone will confuse the top of the plane from the bottom while it's flying....

Hi,

But it proved to be a winning puke green color...

Are You going to make Your Curare green on underside wing+stab with red-white-yellow stripes?

Hi Mitch
sorry don't have any pictures of the bottom of the curare at the moment. Next time
I take it out I'll get some pictures of the bottom and hopefully some video. I didn't go
with the puke green colour - just repeated the orange underneath which seems to be
reasonably visible.

Johnkpap - I used to fly at the Strath model club but I now fly on private property
on Hindmarsh Island (live in Victor Harbor) . I'd love to see your arrow as I only have a fibreglass fuselage - no
wings. Are you going to use retracts on your arrow - if so what type ?

Great to see there are still some builders in SA - I was beginning to lose enthusiasm due to all
of the ARFs at clubs. I still prefer a well built kit over an ARF any day !. And yes it would be great
to see 2 arrows in SA - maybe we could fly a bit
of formation at some stage !!

Hi Nevster

Glass Arrow Fuse !!! Where did you find that one ?

My $5.00 wing came off one of those .... I bought it at last years Holdfast Auction with a $50.00 Blue Angel

An Arrow wing would not be hard to make, I Should be able to copy the belly pan (I plan to make a second wing with Flaps and air spoilers anyway) I will have Retracts in this one :- see Arrow Build Thread

Yes there are still a few of us around in Adelaide who don't spend $$$ on ARF Over the past 2 years I have built the following from plans

Red Zepher
40 Super Kaos
60 Kaos Crashed faulty "New" switch..Bought from a local B%$ Hobby Shop (Ill use a old one next time its safer LOL)
Sidewinder
Airbourne Terra
Jensen Das Ugly Stick...Having Lots of fun with this one

Currently Building :-

Arrow
Flea Fli
Aussi Challenger II :-Airbourne

PM Me and we will see if my wing fits your glass arrow

Hi John,
I thought this might get you itching to fly your Blue Angel.
I have it as a model on Aerofly Professional Deluxe.
It's really hard to get a screenshot while flying knifeedge though !

Hi,

I captured some pictures from video F3A World Championship 1975 in Bern where Hanno Prettner and his Curare placed 2nd. What is interesting is that his Curare was painted light blue then, it was orange color later. Some pictures below (not so good quality) if someone should want to paint a Curare in this paint scheme.
Video where I captured the pictures is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkbwksqIRdk

Thank you Bo, an excellent video. I like this color scheme. It looks like the puke green color from the photo above may have been used in this scheme. If so, it looks much better in these pics.

Edit: or is that just the lighting/video capture from the stills (I think so). Either way, the blue is an option to the orange and would still be authentic.

Hannolikely changed from blue to orange for better visibility in the air. The light blue plane is probably lost in a blue sky.

Hi,
Maybe so, his plane before Curare, Super Sicroly II, had same light blue color also as his Curare in 1975. In 1977 when Hanno Prettner won F3A WC his Curare was orange.
Personally I had some of my F3A planes orange color just for very good visibility. Here is one of my planes from middle 1970th: Mach 1. Orange on botton of wing and stab, white on top of wing and stab with orange leading edges.

Great video Bo! It's a treasure...

Does anyone have any idea what the object attached to the tip of the stab and elevator on Hanno Prettner's Curare could be? It's visible on the still showing a closeup of the tail - it seems to have attracted the cameraman's curiosity as well...

Best regards,

George

I was wondering the same thing. My guess would be that it ensures (visually) that the trim is at neutral prior to takeoff. ???

Yep, visual trim indicators, had the same sort of thing on Sicroly as well. My best guess as to why he didn't use them on later versions is simply with all the travelling he was doing, any slight knock would give a false indication, and some interesting moments on the first flight 'out of the box'.

Another interesting fact documented in this lovely video is that Hanno Prettner seems to be the only competitor shown using a tuned pipe exhaust in the 1975 World Championship... if anyone else was using one, I haven't seen it.

Some shots of the Super Sicroly showing the flaps/airbrakes and the "neutral checkers" mentioned above.
