Big Bird you said it correct. Starting these engines is becoming a little like religion, pick your style and if you can get it running, its good enough for you! It makes me chuckle a bit when all the theorist come out of the wood work. However these forums are great for head bashing and coming up with solutions fast. Get your motor running!

Hi Guys,
I am trying to help a friend who has a ZDZ 40 with the reed induction.....engine is new. When you turn it over by hand, there was blowback out the carb.....I took off the reed and flipped it over as it was not sealing the way it was. It was hanging open about 1/16th to 1/8th of an inch. Since the reed had been turned around, it seems to start and run much better, but it is still doing something weird.....at low idle, it surges. Like it wants to die, then it does if you don't keep the revs up, but you can't fly this thing if it won't idle well below 2500 rpm. It surged much worse before the reed was turned over. Top end if good, makes good power, but coming down lower than 1/4 throttle, it will slowing start surging. Leaned in the low needle to 5/8th open and it seemed to help quite a bit, but it is hard to restart once it quits.
Anyone have any ideas as to what would cause this thing to surge at idle? It's not a burble-like-4 stoke sound, it runs smooth, then increases rpm, then drops it, and if the idle is low enough, sounds like it is misfireing like the ignition is off, then picks up again........very weird...I am haveing a hell of a time trying to figure this out, and my arm is sore.
Thanks
