dragonov3 how did you do the fueling system?
I was thinking about two fuel dots one for filling on one side and another with a T from the muffler.

Alex7403: The rod that is exposed between the elevator halves will be covered by the precut balsa that is supplied with the kit. I did not have any problem with fuel soak there on my last chipmunk, so I will do the same thing. Using a pitts muffler helps to divert the exhaust down and away from the plane.
I used the stock tail wheel assembly as it seemed to work great before, so I saw no need to change it.

I am using the slimline excel fueler. I have used these on several of my airplanes, they are easy to install and you only need a two line setup. They are great for cowled in engines. I have one on my H9 Edge 540, GP Ultimate Bi-plane and my World Models Midget Mustang.

Hey Alex, I see that you installed the elevator and the ruder, are you going to cover her with them installed and if so is this not harder to do? Can you remind me what hinge you are using? Secondly, what will you be covering this bird with?

Yes TB I'm gonna cover her with hinges installed.
The hinges are SIG easy hinges (CA hinges) not the GP, I learned to work with them and never had problems.
the idea is to put a stripe of covering on the hinge line about 1/4" from every surface than just cover on it, the problem with this method is the corners which is hard to get into because of the control surfaces but I learned how to deal with it too.
the benefits are huge: if you have a mistake with the control surface you know about it during the building stage and not when the airplane is already covered, second the covering is sealed and you dont have glue on the covering from hinging, you have no knocks from off line hinges etc'.
CA hinges are very good with this method, I learned to do it this way and very happy.

covering I'm gonna do with monokote, I heard ultracoat is better but again I learned to work with monokte and there are several big benefits to it like matching spray paint to some basic colors, trim solvent, lots of colors and some minuses too.

Anyone tried the Robart struts for the CG Super Chipmunk? They look like a nice finishing touch if you want to give it a realistic landing gear look. I will have to put it on my second string wish list.

Hey all! How is everybody doing on their Chipmunk build. I started covering mine today, went to shrink the first large piece of covering on the wing then my heat gun died. Heat gun was about 20 years old lol. Dang it, had to stop covering. Was hoping to get the wing covered tonight. Will buy new heat gun tomorrow and keep moving. Anybody close to having theirs done? Painted wheel pants, spinner and cowl this last weekend. All came out good. Hope to have it complete and maiden it this weekend. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Take your heat gun apart and take a look. Mine had a solder joint break.
I redid the solder joint and it works fine.

Well, I have been flying a lot (a good thing) and working on my Cub, but I am almost ready for covering myself. Just need to tie up a few loose ends and get her ready for covering. I have all my radio equipment and I re-hinged using Robart hinge points, I am still trying to decide what to cover her with. Anybody used the FS canopy, and wheel pants?

I had to shorten the the LG that goes into the wing by 1/4" and did the flap rods to servo so it will move without stress, sanded and started covering the wing, my battery will sit near the D former of the fuselage.

Alex, how’s the plane coming? I am working to get my plane ready for covering. My goal is to have her ready by next weekend, just a few things to get finished before final sanding and covering prep. My biggest obstacle was the flap. I came up with this set-up and hopefully this will work. If the budget will allow, I may do the Robart struts.

Hi TB

As for my Chipmunk I covered and finished the wing, now I'm covering the fuselage (I'll add pictures later).
Total dry weight comes to be something like 6.8 pounds means I might add a pilot figure....
I had terrible problems with the black monokote - doesn't shrink I'm making holes too easy, called tower and they send a new one right away (wow Thanks).
just the blacknot the white, red, orange, blue, just the black.
TB, nice setup for the flaps servo check if its not too high and touching other servos it looks right but better to know it sooner than later.

Alex, I like your color scheme. I am thinking yellow, as the main color, some black and maybe so red. I think I will try UltraCoat for the covering. Now I am getting excited about my plane.

The other day I was flying my Avistar trainer, it dead sticked and when I got to it (a safe landing) and picked it up, fuel was poring out of the nose, I got it back to the pits to find the fuselage flooded with fuel. The fuel line broke at the fuel tank (hens the dead stick).

So now I will be installing drains in all the fuselages where fuel can collect if there is a leak. I am using a small grommet for the finishing touch; I will install this after covering, and then seal it with epoxy on the inside.

I finished the da_n thing OMG everything was a problem at the end but now its finished.
dry weight 7.75 lb dont know how I got there well the pilot is 3 oz and there is a balsa belly pan...
hope to fly it on wednesday there are many things that need after flight adjustment like the ailerons.
the wheel pants I'm gonna install after I see the LG is holding the landings.
The motor I ended up with is tower 75 with 12x8 - 13x6 props.
Radio is Hitec Aurora 9 with total 6 servos, also the ailerons are on separate channels something I wanted to try.
Until now I didnt use the supplied decals but in this case it was asking for it.

Alex looks really good. I just ordered my covering; I am going with the UltraCoat covering. I see you had to put the batteries in the tail section; do you have a hatch for access? I decided to go with a Saito 100 instead of the OS 61, so I am waiting on the new engine, should be here any day now. I will pre balance before covering, and I may do a hatch on the bottom of the tail section for balancing. I am shooting to be ready to maiden my plane the fallowing weekend.

Well I tried to fly it today and the day wasn’t so successful depends how you look at it….
I taxied it and took off lost control and it crashed not severely luckily only the prop was broken.

It behaved as tail heavy (first mistake) and the throws are huge (second mistake).
We lifted it from the wing tips at the spars and the tail went down, when I checked its CG upside down it was perfect but when I hold it up right its very tail heavy.

This pitts style muffler on the tower 75 makes a funny noise like its 25 engine…

Except for my ego and the prop this time everything is fine and fixable, one soul less.
I need to stop flying this way I guess.

Alex, the plane looks great, sorry to hear about the first flight woes. I installed the Saito engine and throttle linkage. Fuel proofed the interior and painted the firewall. Tomorrow I will cover this bird with the help of my mentor. I went with the inverted installation and my use a pitts muffler for the Saito.

Thanks TB, and looks good TB your cowl will have much less holes in it.
I wouldnt use that linkage connection on anything important like elevator or ailerons because its very unreliable.

Well, I finally got her ready for covering, pre balanced showed she was just a tight bit nose heavy with the battery placed in front of the servo tray, so there is room to move it back, or forward for final balancing. This is my first covering job, I went with UltraCote. I had the help of my mentor to get started, and then I finished on my own. I got the wing done short of painting the wing tips and the plastic on the belly. I found the UltraCote very easy to work with; I did melt one of the plastic wing tips, got to aggressive with the heat gun. Some bondo will take care of that. All in all, she is coming together nicely, next on to the ailerons, and flaps, then to the fuselage.
