Accident occurred : Sunday, June 1, 2003 at ST. THOMAS, VI
Aircraft : Sig 'Somethin' Extra'
Engine : Tiger Shark .53
Pilot: "Jens"
Injuries: Multiple, nonfatal.

This is preliminary information, subject to change, and may contain errors. Any errors in this report will be corrected when the final report has been completed.

On June 1, at approximately 1210 Atlantic standard time, a Sig Somethin' Extra nonregistered homebuilt airplane, was damaged following impact with terrain in St. Thomas, VI. The private pilot was not injured. The owner/pilot was operating the airplane under Title 14 CFR Part 103. Visual meteorological conditions with winds in excess of 15 knots prevailed for the personal flight that originated from Simón Pierre Field approximately 8 minutes before the accident. No flight plan had been filed.

The pilot attempted a low-speed descending knife-edge turn into the wind with a snap to level, but didn't have enough airspeed to complete the turn, and struck the ground. The right wing was damaged, landing gear torn off and the fuselage crushed in several spots.

The St. Thomas R/C Association Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows:
OVERCONFIDENCE IN PERSONAL ABILITY.. PILOT IN COMMAND
