STRCASB Identification: STT003F025 . The docket is stored on visioneer_one's ancient Powerbook

Accident occurred : Friday, July 4, 2003 at ST. THOMAS, VI
Aircraft : Great Planes 'U-Can-Do 3D .60'
Engine : YS 1.20 NC
Pilot: "BigD"
Injuries: Multiple, fatal.

This is preliminary information, subject to change, and may contain errors. Any errors in this report will be corrected when the final report has been completed.

On July 4, at approximately 1420 Atlantic standard time, a Great Planes U-Can-Do 3D nonregistered homebuilt airplane, was destroyed following impact with terrain in St. Thomas, VI. The private pilot was not injured. The owner/pilot was operating the airplane under Title 14 CFR Part 103. Visual meteorological conditions with winds in excess of 18 knots prevailed for the personal flight that originated from Simón Pierre Field approximately 4 minutes before the accident. No flight plan had been filed.

According to witnesses the airplane's tail feathers and aft fuselage were observed to be twisting. The elevators fluttered fairly violently during one high-speed pass. The flight terminated when the pilot attempted a mid-throttle Cuban 8 - at which point the airplane's tail section broke away completely. Damage was severe - the wing and fuselage were crushed and broken in several places. The elevator assembly was not initially found, but was recovered from the brush a few days later.

The St. Thomas R/C Association Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows:
AIRFRAME.. OVERPOWERED
AIRSPEED.. Vne EXCEEDED

OK guys, I'm caught up.

Quit harassing me for 'missing writeups', or crash less

After reading your recent crash reports I have come to the conclusion that you need to lower the ground in ST Thomas. It seems to be so high that is eating your planes. LOL

We're already right near sea level, give or take 20 feet.
Any lower and our engines would be *really* hard to start

Note: Herbert now has this UCD3D wreckage and is planning on rebuilding it and keeping it as spare parts for my wrecked-n-rebuilt UCD. The guy is good!

visioner_one: Yep, been there several times. Stayed at Point Pleasant before they put the underwater observatory on Koki Point. I am jealous. Now if you remove that 20 feet, you can add floats and still keep flying. LOL
