Status: offline 		wow dv i like the look of the sprocket on that diff,fairly solid looking set up.

also that suspension set up looks awesome,they look like great a-arms. what way is the weight going so far?

you should get a nice spread of power and good handling from that diff in any aplication you use it on.

man my beetle is very heavy and the engine is 7.5hp plus and i am running "still" the same diff now for the last year,untouched and not even inspected,last time i checked it for greese was when i fitted the elcon balldrive system was over 5months ago.

just a testament to how tough they are.

Using some stainless steel fittings a mate got for me a while back and I filed them in the "It'll come in handy" box.

That is probably a good thing that the stainless T is heavy (like in heavy duty) as I can imagine there is some stress at this point. That a ingenious setup for the rear suspension, are you planning to use similar shocks setup as in the front ?

Only the ones from the other day before I started on the swingarm mount.

The wheelbase is about 700mm though.

Cracked open a couple of laptop batteries last night after watching those "hack" videos on YouTube.
Inside there's 8 nice batteries, a bit bigger than AA's.

One of the laptops hadn't been charged for over a year and each individual battery inside it still held 3.9V!
Gonna put them on charge and see what they get up to.

Could be a good battery source

Adds to the effect.


Seriously though, it seems that almost all large batterypacks of any kind contains smaller batteries.
There's a lot of good, cheap sources for powerful and rechargeable batteries out there for us cheapskates.


Just gotta get a voltage regulator of some sort to bring it down to 6V.

Status: offline 		Hey DVP, I hope you're planning on using a dedicated charger for lithium chemistry batteries! I've got quite a few of those lying around as well but have never used them. I felt the need for a voltage regulator, voltage cutoff, and explosion hazard next to my gas tank was not worth the extra capacity.

Whatever you do, be careful, because we need to see some more home creations coming from Australia...

What do you reckon about shocks at the front of the whole setup, like where the red clamp is in the picture.

I'm not sure how stiff the shocks you have are, but in the position you have the clamp I think it should work well. If you find that the suspension is too soft, you could always lengthen the part of the beam that extends from underneath the engine a bit.

The motor is definitely sitting too high so that will have to be changed.

Found a bearing holder that suits the diff.
Just need something for the sprocket side.


And wheelbase and track width measurments.
A bit too short perhaps.

Aiming for 700mm wheelbase

Work just fine. Be interesting too! Don't over spring it. and if need be, don't be afraid to make the lever arm longer or shorter. Nothing says those rear shocks can't be all the way at the front of the car on a long lever arm if need be.

Preferably in the direction of travel. Normally, the rationale for leaning shocks is soften ride, make them more progressive, compensate heavy or light springs to suit the build. etc. a 100 pound spring, at a 45 degree angle, feels like a 50 pound spring. So it's also a tuning thing. The springs only job is to hold up the car and set ride height. Dampening is everything else.


In a perfect scenario, at full suspension extension, the spring reaches zero load at the exact same instance the suspension finishes extending. And is maximally crushed when the suspension is at maximum compression. Or there abouts. It's a trade off.

Yea. Here's the deal. That will work. how far do you want to take it? And how much work do you want to add?

The more you push the lower shock mount forward on the frame, the more easily it will compress as it goes through it's travel, so what happens is that it moves stiff initially and then gets easier. I'd work the mounts so that when compressed the shock and chassis are at a 90 degree angle, allowing the most mechanical advantage for the spring.

Usually less than I end up doing, so that's not really something I worry too much about anymore.....


I thought of another thing just earlier when I was out for a drive.
I might attempt a cantilever setup similar to Vassilis'

This way I could have the mechanism set up permanently and change/modify the shocks as I go.
