This is a feeler and kind of a question to see what you guys thought about a Sailcar...

http://home.att.net/~rcsailcars/index.htm

Just to get a feel about what you all think? Please post thoughts, questions, feelings, comments of any sort.

The reason I am asking is because I am a student at San Diego State University and I am consulting the RC Sailcar site/business and want to see if there is any sort of interst in this type of product...ALL INFO WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!

I think they're cool, but we don't have either the place to sail 'em nor the breezes!!!!!

They look cool, and I can even think of a couple places locally to sail them (defunct KMart parking lots), but I bet I would be doing it solo.

I made a sail car once. It was pretty easy to do. Two sticks in a cross, three left over airplane wheels, various airplane parts and I just borrowed the mast and main sail rig from one of my boats. It was fun to do and didn't cost me a penny.

I also have a Dumas DN-Iceboat sitting in my closet waiting it's turn on the buildiing board.

That's cool...Except with the Windjammer, it's going to cost a couple of bucks, because of the controls, servos and all. Did you notice if other people had any interest in the sailcar? Or is this idea just ?

INPUT PLEASE (from anyone)

It is a neat idea, but it looks as if it would be more fun to run them in races. Perhaps one of the RC sailing organizations would adopt the format. One you need to do is get a review of the car in a magazine or two. With exposure comes sales...

Magizine review = Great Idea as well which magazines specifically?

RC Universe has reviews for all types of RC. The person you would need to talk to is Larry Eddy. You can send him a private message by clicking on the following link: Larry Eddy

One organization is AMYA (American Model Yachting Association) www.amya.net They have links to other sailing organizations.

Others can be found by searching on the net for RC sailboat organization, or something like that. If that doesn't work, start your own association.

Good luck,
Dave

A while ago I made a landyacht with a friend of mine. Lots of fun but the biggest problem was finding a site that was big enough and was not sheltered from the wind.

My land yacht was made from extrusions from commercial aluminum door frames, go-kart wheels/tires, and a plastic laundromat seat. It didn't have brakes. How stupid was that?? The 25 sf sail was sewn from rip-stop nylon used for windbreakers. The whole thing cost less than $75 in the '70's.

It would do about 35-40 mph on the beach at low tide with an on-shore breeze of 15 mph. It had rudder pedals with push-rods for steering. You could spin it on packed sand, but it would flip on a paved lot. Riding with one wheel up was the most fun.

The big mistake I made was to arrange the steering linkage so pushing with the right foot made it turn left. When I started flying full-size planes, I was the worst taxier the instructor had ever seen. No problems in the air, but a real mess on the ground.

Roger

I once made Coroplast SnowSkie thing with an .049 in it. I waited all summer till January and not a hint of snow. I took it apart for the servos and reciever. It snowed in February. :
