My pup is a joy to fly. Don't misunderstand, it does require your complete atention while in the air, and can be a challenge at times. It becomes easy to see why they don't build airplanes like this anymore. Being a bipe gives it a lot of drag and it will slow and stall very quickly if you pull the throtlle back. On the ground, mine would not make a straight take off run until I added a steerable tail wheel. It has never nosed over because the wheels are out in front that inch or so. The DLE 30 will torque it to the left on take off, so you need to limit the power you apply. It will bounce easily on a landing that is not perfect, so I spend a lot of time practicing. I always fly it to the ground being fearfull of the stall thing.
I like your idea of cylindical weights as long as the mount is secure and doesn't overstress the firewall. If a guy could somehow make the cowl heavier, that would, ofcourse be the best place for the weight. Maybe some of the other guys can chime in here with what they have done.

Throttle variations and nose attitude goes together. No stalls if controlled.

On take off the power should always be applied smoothly. With a tail dragger the tail should be lifted as soon as possibel to make the prop plane of rotation 90 degrees to the trajectory and eliminate the turn tendency.

On appoach there is no risk of stall if you control the speed. Once you flare out you can do either a full stall landing (no bounce) or a wheel landing during which the nose attitude has to be controlled until the tail comes down by itself.

I have 4 oz of weight installed on the inside of the cowl in one of my planes wihout any problems.
The cowl has been reinforced to allow that.

Have fun and enjoy,

Hey Guys,  what do you recommend for sealing Solartex once it has been applied. I have seen several comments that a sealer is needed or Solartex will discolor or retain stains. I am using Solartex, not another product. I don't have an airbrush system, so something in a spray can is preferred.  Thanks!

Kevin

I don't yet know what works well. On my pup I used nothing and it does get stained by exhaust gases. It's no big deal on the pup. It kinda adds to the realizm. I did spray rustoleum clear over the solartex on a astrohog with a nitro engine. Not happy. I have never had any colored rustoleum be attacked by methanol before, but the clear turned into a sticky mess. I had to remove it using acetone. So I don't know what to tell you. Maybe thinned clear dope would work. I do think that anything that would truely seal it would take away the wonderful texture that it has, and then you might just as well use monokote or ultracoat. Maybe it is worth a call to BUSA, they are the biggest US distributor.

Hello,

I was wondering the same thing for Solartex. This is the first time that I will use this product. Does it stick properly or do I need a coat of Balsarite?  Here are some pictures of my project.

Thanks!

Daniel

Gentlemen, I used Minwax "Clear Satin" Polyurethane in a spray can many years ago, it's still easy to clean. My Pup is gas powered.
Solartex really sticks to wood, you don't need Balsarite or anything else. It also stretches over compound curves.

I'd forgotten about polyurethane. It does make a good fuelproofer / sealer inside and out.
Solartex sticks like grim death.

I used a bush on polyurathane the brush strokes are realistic as the Pups where brush painted.
They where very dirty planes , the motors burned caster oil with the fuel much like a two stroke does . There range was limited by the size of the oil tank not the fuel tank. Lol.
With the motor rotating and basicly no exhaust you can think of the mess.

The oil stains on my pup are simulated, that is not real oil under the wing. I used "sight black" a spray used for gunsights and mixed it with the polyurethane and then brushed it on. Sometimes get a laugh when guys try to wipe it off.

Guys,

I have just recently found this thread and am not finished reading all the great info in it. Many of the engine sizes posted are in the 30cc range. I have a CRRC 26cc from another plane I'd like to use. Will a 26cc engine be enough? I ordered the plane on Dec 23 and hope to have it delivered sometime next week.

I've read through a lot of build threads in the past and this one is outstanding.

Wes

I have a Zenoah G26 and it has plenty of power. This isn't an aerobatic plane and the 26 flys it very scale. Good luck with your build

Wes, I have an old US 25cc motor in my Pup. It can do big loops, snap rolls, etc with ease. I only use about 1/2 throttle for just cruising around. The one nice thing about older engines is that they tend to be heavier, which means I didn't have to add any nose weight!

Well, Happy New Year. My plane arrived this morning. I've been reading through the manual (no, really) and looking through the plans. One thing comes to mind. Someone mentioned the servo push rods and the issue of the vibrating rods while the engine was running. Has anyone installed a servo just forward of the tail section to eliminate the length of the push rods? I understand the issue of tail weight that would cause. I have a plane with the servos in the tail that works well.

Also, I'd like to use a tail wheel in place of the skid. How would you recommend connecting that to the rudder servo? Or would you add a tail wheel servo in the tail?

I build slow, so don't expect a bunch of photos right away.

Wes
