Bill - I hope the rubber band wing mounts are "picture only" items.   Will the center section be permanent and the outer section of the wings removable? If not and I was any where close to the plane I'd end up bustin' the fuses apart. Ya gonna have ailerons & flaps, ailerons only or flaperons? Looks like it should come is some where around 10 - 11 lbs.

Yup - this is gonna be a fun build to follow. Gotta do a build thread.

The illustration above is just a copied and taped together pieces
from the Lt-40 kit manual. The outer wing panels will be removable,
the center section will be bolted to the 2 fuselages, no ruber bands,
but removable for access to the radio compartment. There will be a
spreader I have designed between the two fuselages at the bottom to
keep to much pressure from being put on the wing in a less than perfect
landing. Being a high lift wing (flat bottomed) I don't think flaps will be
necessary but I may just build then in from the start. I spoke with my
old instructor, he's the guy that I have a lot of respect for and is my
maiden test pilot for all of my builds, his take is, flaperons on this wing
platform will cause the plane to be squirely on approach and suggested
if I wanted flaps to build them in as a seperate feature, back to the drawing
board, will likely build in "drop down flaps" instead of using just trailing edge
material, we'll see how it goes, as the build gets underway, I am still thinking
of moving the fuselages closer together and overlapping the props, will see
what it looks like when the other fuselage is in hand.

This one is going to blow the mid of a lot of the guys at the field when I show
up with it.

BTW I think a seperate build thread is in order on this one, in the twin column.

I was just jerkin' your chain on the rubber band deal. I understand starting a new twins thread. RCAdmin (guy named Marc) needs to give us the ability to have a thread be active in more than one forum. That would allow a thread to be active in both "kit building" and "twins". If you hadn't mentioned it I would never look at "twins" for a kit building thread.

What 'cha thinking on doing with the landing gear?

I ran into a Robart hinge point problem - "lack of experience". The elevator was seriously weakened and when I was gently messing with it it broke into 3 pieces. As a result I have decided to revert back to a CA hinge approach.

What are you getting from Balsa USA?

Balsa for the stabalizer and spars for the wing center section.
Didn't have any 5/16th balsa on hand, got everything else though.

I was told by my LHS that SIG was the sole distributor of 5/16" stock. Are you saying that he, uh, gee - LIED to me?

My club is having a mall show next weekend. We display up to several hundred airplanes including those of our planes that we submitted for voting in our "I Built It - 2010" contest. We hope to have heli demos and will have a build going on. I'm thinking that I'm going to leave the LT-40 "in the bones" and display it that way. May even see if there's room to do some covering of the LT at the mall show.

I'm almost done with "re-hinging" with CA hinges. Yea, I bailed.

Here's one of my two LT-40's that I convereted to tail draggers.
I found a cowl from fiberglass specialties that fits, #RCM 1064.

Nice-n-clean LT. Did it need much nose weight?

I have a SIG Smith Mini cowl sittin' around - darn, too big for the LT.

If I did the glass cowls like that I would have to make it look
a little cleaner by side mounting the engines, hummmmm, might
look pretty snazzy on the twin.

Very nicely done graphics, really sharp looking LT, stands out at the
field............

Bill - how about inverted? Couple of Pitts mufflers or something stealthy. Very clean indeed.

I'm installing CF rod controls for the elevator, rudder & tail wheel. Should be able to post a pic (or pics) tomorrow. Sunday - playing road racing driver instructor for a couple of hot shots driving Corvette Z06's. Now there's some serious HP and giggle factor (especially when the client forgets to brake or turn the steering wheel at 100 mph).

I have 6oz. in the nose. Flies great. It's an old O.S. 45 FSR.
I built it to give to my Dad as a second plane.

I can't remember why I didn't invert or side mount the engine, but there was a problem. Maybe I didn't want the extra work.

All the graphics are Painted on and the cowl is aluminum tape left over from my Eindecker build.

Current state: (almost) ready to cover.

All control surfaces are hinged with CA hinges (Yea - I bailed).
All servos are mounted including a mini servo dedicated to the tail wheel - mounted in the wing bay rather than at the rear of the fuse.
All control rods have been fitted and adjusted though the throws have not been established. Need to add a couple of braces for the tail wheel control rod tube.
The all-up weight excluding covering is 6 lb. 10 oz.

I used a Sullivan cable-in-tube for the throttle. The aileron controls are a refit of the previously used threaded-wire-n-soldered-clevis. The elevator and rudder use Sullivan CF rods-in-tubes. The tail wheel control is also a CF rod but in an old Sullivan "blue" tube. This will give a bit of wiggle room that will help absord tail wheel bounces.

The Rx is a Spektrum AR7000. Each aileron is on its own channel to allow refined adjustment and flaperons (AILE - right & AUX1 - left), The rudder and tail wheel use separate channels as the one of them would need reversed (RUDD & AUX2). RUDD & AUX2 are mixed at 100% all of the time. The elevator and throttle use ELEV & THRO. THRO is mixed with THRO to provide for a throttle kill switch. The GEAR channel is left open. I tried using the AR6100 mixing the RUDD and GEAR but things weren't working as expected. Thinking that GEAR is all or none in operation. Any way, the AR7000 has more room for the plugins whereas the AR6100 is very limited in space and the connections needed to be forced - not a good situation.

Now all I need is some covering inspiration.

I know what you mean about inspiration. It can be a tough call. What about searching full size planes, like a Cessna 180, or Beavers. These colors would be sort of be for work horse type planes. Take a look around airliners.net, and use the photo search, tons of ideas from real planes. (if that's a direction you want to go)

The airplane looks great, nice clean work. Daren

Just had to add the covering plan for the LT. No actual pics from the effort. I used Ultracote white, true red, bright yellow and black. While flying there is wayyyyy toooooo much white. Need to pay careful attention during flight. As it's moderately powered with an OS 46 FX there's little danger of out flying the covering scheme.

In retrospect the bottom would have been red base for the wing and stab / elevators with yellow tabs on the wing tips. Then stay away from a dominant red on the wing top. Hind sight is 20x20 ...

pic 1/3 - current scheme
pic 4/6 - alternate scheme - bottom is the big change.

Bil this scheme is great.  How did you get the pinstriping and curves in the red?  Was this just handcut on the board?  Very impressive look.

I cut the curved pieces freehand. But first things first. I use a Sharpie to mark the shape on top of the Ultracote. I use dotted lines - not continuous. The backing is pulled off and the piece is laid out on the Hobbico cutting mat (see green matrixed background in the pic). It has enough grip to keep the film from sliding around. It also has no "grain" that affects the direction of the cutting blade. I may tape the film to the mat. Using a new or just "stropped" razor blade (or X-acto #11 blade) the cut is started at one end and with a continous pull the entire arc is cut - without stopping or lifting the blade. If I use a continous line I get too hung up with staying on the line. With a dotted line I just let my eye (attention) move to the next dot and smoothly pull the blade towards it. Before I get to that dot, I move to the next and pull the blade towards the next dot - and so on. Kinda like driving a car on a race track - when coming up to a curve, spot the turn in point, drive to it, before you get to the turn in point, spot the apex point and then smoothly turn to the apex, before you get to the apex point, spot the exit point and let it draw you smoothly past the apex. That's what the pros do

The orange, yellow and red film is combined into a single panel before the panel is applied to the wing as a single sheet of film.

Using chip board also works well for making smooth cuts. Chip board is just 1/16 cardboard. It used to be used on the bottom of pallets and places like Sam's Club or Costco just tossed it out. It isn't used as much these days but when I shop at these places I go into the back of the store and ask for it. They often just let me walk in the area that they bundle the throw away card board and let me have any I find. Keeps your blades sharper longer too. When covering I cover my whole building board and cut on that.

Well guys? Where is your plane?  I maidened mine today. Oh MAN what a sweet bird!  Ground handling is superb, and take off is at 3/4 throttle with not much up elevator, a huge difference compared to my electrics. This is my first glow and first tail dragger. I am just thrilled with it.

I was a bit concerned using the tail gear from the TF P-51 kit, but it worked much better than I thought it would The plane handled well in tall grass. I would not have been able to fly my Apprentice today in that grass, but the LT didn't even care.

My first flight ended in a dead stick in the field, but it floated down and landed on all 3 wheels.  I need to get the engine tuned correctly though before I fly it again. I hate dead sticks when there is still fuel in the tank.

This was my color scheme, just some color added to the base white that ARF comes in. I converted it to wing bolts and tail-dragger rather deal with rubberbands and a nose-wheel in our high grass.

Here's mine. I started with the kit and made mine a taildragger and bolt-on wing from the start. Thanks to this thread it went very smoothly. Here's a few pics from the build (let's hope this upload works...)

1 - Wing with 4" wide fibreglass cloth to support bolt-holes. I also added balsa filler between the top and bottom sheeting
2 - Plywood bayonet tied into center ribs and spars
3 - Slot for bayonet. Also have ply reinforcing on the front of the former, not shown
4 - I also added balsa filler blocks at the nose
5 - Small nylon tubes on the bottom of the fuse to guide the tailwheel cables, installed at an angle

More to come...

More of my taildragger convert...

1 - I made a tiller bar from a large Du-Bro servo horn and used the Sullivan kevlar pull-pull cable for the tailwheel. I had to cut a few clearance notches in the formers for the cables. The rudder uses its own pushrod. This also shows the hardwood wing hold-down blocks
2 - Du-Bro scale tailwheel assembly driven with pull-pull cables.

I used an old Klett plastic landing gear bracket I had lying around, but pretty much any 60-sized bracket will work
