Can I use Hobblite balsa filler on wood prior to monokote to even out any dents and prevent grain from showing through? Or is this going to put me in a major bubble situtation since the air gases etc, can be absorbed by wood? Ive only covered one plane some dents and wood grain showed through and now looking for better finish on some wood floats. Thanks for your help

My filler of choice is the NHP "Micro-Fill," it is micro balloons mixed in an aliphatic glue. If the "Hobbilite" filler can be thinned with water I would suppose it's effectively the same thing.

And using the "Micro-Fill" I have no problems with covering, provided I wait long enough for it to dry completely.

If you want to mix your own, Prather sells the micro ballons dry, you can mix it in whatever vehicle you like - epoxy, water-based urethane, Elmer's, or even Ambroid.

HTH.

Bill.

Yes, you can use the HobbyLite filler before covering. I use it for dents/dings or small gaps between mating parts that aren't perfect prior to covering. You can also use some water and your covering iron to swell out dents with steam. The only thing I caution you on is that the Monokote does not adhere to the filler as well as it does to the wood. In my experience, it does not cause any more bubbling. Don't try to fill the entire plane with the stuff- too much work, and not worth it. Just sand your grain down to a 220 grit, and that hides the grain quite well. Hope this helps.

I have turned my iron up & ironed the bare wood before covering , seem's to me to give a smoother finish to the plastic coverings. MAX H.

Max:

I thought up there in South Dakota you had a festival that lasted through all three days of summer.

Two weeks , tops , Bill. Most people don't pay much attention to it though as it runs the same time as mating season & most are busy !! MAX H.
