The LA-5/7 did not have a cooling fan.... I' thought it did and you can find lots of statements about the "fan" from people mentioning it but when you really look at it and dig you'll find it what looks like a fan is actually a sliding vent that opens when needed.

This video is the best example I can find of the bit you're talking about. Look at 5:30 - 6:00 in this video.




That Gene Barton Spinner fills the nose up pretty good. I don't think I'll need a fan/vent/dummy motor as much as I like the look of those things. The look will be correct and not leave a huge hole like you might think.

They were more of a shutter, that could be opened or closed as needed. Looks like a fan when it's in it's open position though I guess.

Status: offline 		Huh, imagine that. I always thought it was a fan like the FW-190; even the "blades" looked like they have pitch on them.
Thanks for the correction guys.
Now that you all have stated so, I see in a couple of Google pictures where the vents are fully closed. I should have clued in because it was only in August when I was a local airshow and there were 2 Nangchang CJ-6s on display which have the same cowl vents.

Good to know that Gene's spinner will cover in most of the cowl.

Status: offline 		Regarding installation of the engine on the LA-7, the instructions state to install the engine right on the center of the firewall (i.e. with the propeller/crank shaft directly over the center hole in the firewall).  I plan on using a DLE 35RA engine.  Should I install this engine slightly above the center of the firewall to counteract the tendancy to climb?  Or should I just follow the instructions and put it right on center?  If anyone has had any experience, please let me know.  Thanks   Art M

Status: offline 		I went with the XYZ 53cc twin mostly for smoothness. If I wasn't worried about smoothness, I'd go with the 55. It says right in the instructions and on TBM's website that the model is inherently tail heavy and needs a little weight up front. Might as well be weight that gives you something vs dead weight in my opinion.

BUT... I'm just unpackaging mine and starting the build - so what do I know....

Mine will be heavy. Air retracts, 53cc, smoke system, cockpit. We'll see how it goes I guess.

I have the Saito 325 radial in mine which is quite heavy. I did not require any additional weight to get the c.o.g. correct. I was able to use my flight power packs to fine tune the balance over a few flights to get the bird flying with the feel I preferred. my A.U.W is close to 24pounds. It`s no lite weight but it flies nice and with plenty of speed.

Status: online 		My La-7 flew with the ROTO 35V and now I flying with ROTO 35Vi. I saw it with the XYZ 26, but it hasn´t power reserve. In my opinion if you want to have realistic fly, you should use engine between 30-45ccm. With bigger engine it will be acrobatic special.

I don't want to use control horns that protrude through the other side of the aileron and have simply screwed the horns into the aileron and flaps on one side (hardened the holes with CA, CA'd the screws in even after that). What have you guys done?

For electric I wouldn't worry at all, but mine is gas and I'm kinda wondering if I shouldn't just stick the dumb rod all the way through the wing and go that route instead. It just doesn't look scale. Thoughts?

Status: offline 		Here's what I'm talking about. Nevermind, the picture thing wouldn't work, getting some sort of error.

I've pulled really hard (harder than I should have probably) on the horns and they all seem really strong so I'm going to fly it this way. Mostly just curious if anyone else here has done the same. I would be less comfortable if the ailerons were bigger but I have 40 sized planes with bigger ailerons than this thing secured the same way.

Status: offline 		That is what I did with mine, I used the 3 point Hanger 9 control horns and drilled and hardened the holes, then cut away the covering and glued and screwed them in.   I have done this on other planes and the only problem I have had is removing them :-)     Who knew that the glue actually works!

Status: offline 		Well I got the cockpit done. I probably could have built the plane with the same amount of time I spent on the cockpit, it was fun though.

I'll be surprised if half these parts still exist after the first few flights with a gas motor.

I'll also be surprised if the gunner sight survives past me building building the plane. I'm pretty sure I'm going to forget it's there and set the plane on it while working on something else.

Now I need a russian to pilot this thing!

I wouldn't worry too much how they look on the ground. You can't see them in the air. The wing is "stretched" for lighter wing loading and easier flying so it is not truly scale anyway.
The plane is a great flier but check both wing and stab incidence and get them as close to zero as possible. Out of the mold, the plane will climb.

Status: offline 		If you want a full body pilot you will have to do what I did.
check out my posts on pg. 11
all the parts I used were found on e-bay and I have a list of the accesories I purchased on one of those posts, there are also pictures of WWII Rusian pilots I used to try to duplicate the pilot.
I failed to take pictures of the finished pilot once I had found the right accesories for it but these pictures show what it looked like before I changed the parachute and the head gear.
also on e-bay there is a guy that sells the RUsian pilot uniform insignias in 1/6 scale.
your cockpit looks great by the way.

Status: offline 		Thanks pilot, I'll keep my eyes out on ebay. I went there once and saw one I really like, but it was $120. So... still looking. I don't mind piecing it together if I have to, would be nice if there was a good authentic russian out there but they don't seem to be too popular.

I cant find the parachute right now nor the leather flight cap
you will need the parachute form one of the U.S.navy 1/6 scale and the flight cap from either the 1/6 IJN pilot or the Crazy Dummies 1/6 german pilot, they come up for sale every now and then. you'll have to keep an eye out for them.
