Side by side:

A little higher on the model, but not much. I bet this plane was fun to land

Big radial with the pilot so far back it must have been a tough plane to land. Good thing most of landing strips were in large open fields.

Jmohn...I was trying to figure out which tailwheel retract unit you used.... Not a Robart? (did I miss something?)

I love this plane... I read this forum and bought one from TBM yesterday... its on its way.

Jeff mentioned it on bottom of page 2 . He used a Dubro retractable tail wheel..You may want to try this one its all self conatined and all you have to do is run airlines back to it. Its pretty lightweight and i have used it on planes up to 46 lbs...

Its one from B&D. Its the same one Yellow A/C uses. It has a small cylinder built into the retract...

Ty and Jeff,
I searched the Dubro home site and couldn't seem to find a retractable tailwheel unit....
I am interested in the nosewheel unit though.... is the wire too big for a tailwheel? or do you just bend the wire and rebore the wheel bushing?

Mine was just a simple mechanical tail wheel. It may be an old Dubro retractalbe wheel? It fits in nicely and works great.

I tried to do the maiden on Sunday and had an issue on take off and the plane pulled up and rolled over on it's top. Minor damage to the cowl. I couldn't believe what little damage was done as it looked bad. I found out that one side of the elevator had been bent and is the probably cause of the roll over on take off. I must have bumped it in the car or a the field and didn't notice it. It's all fine now and ready for the second time.

I ended up adding about 6 oz. of lead in the tail and moved the flight pack all the way back to get the CG right. It's still a little nose heavy, but after seeing how easily it took off I may make it more nose heavy

So has anyone flown this plane yet? I have one on the way, and have read about engine choice, gear modifications, weathering, electrifying, but no flight performances. Is this one so new that nobody has got it off their bench, or maybe the weather has been forbidding?

I tried to fly mine and did for a second. I ran down the runway and the plane jumped into the air and fliped over. I landed upside down on the runway. It had a couple scrapes on the cowl (repaired) and that was it. I couldn't figure out what happened until I got back to the pit and saw that one side of the elevator was offset from the other. I must have hit it assembling or transporting the plane. Took off one side of the elevator and fixed it. I am all ready for the next flight now.

I ended up leaving mine a little nose heavy for the first flight too. I don't know if I will get time this weekend to try it again, but will post some information if I do.

Mine is electric: Eflite Power 160. It has way too much power

I looked at the Evolution and it would fit the best and provided plenty of power. My plane came out weighing just under 20 lbs. so anything putting out 3 HP or more should be fine. My electric motor puts out over 3.5 HP with a 20-10 prop.

The only reason I went electric is because I couldn't find a gas motor that would totally fit inside the cowl and I didn't want anything sticking out. The only motors that would fit were nitro and I don't want nitro anymore

The Evolution motor had the lowest profile of all the motors I looked at. The Bryson 2/4 motor also had a pretty low profile too.

All of the gas motors I looked at would stick out a little. Not so much on the Evo or Bryson motos, but all did a little. Only an electric or nitro motor would be clean.

I'm going to stick an EVO 35 on mine and will cut a hole underneath on the cowl if the engine needs to stick out. You are going to need to cut a hole in it anyway, it looks like the cowl forms right up to the sides with no venting so why not have the head and pipes stick down through for air?

I will when it gets here... It just left your state yesterday. But I saw some pictures from UK Warbird Guy on this site of his and it appears to have the Evo GT in it's cowl. I don't know if it is the 26 or the 35.

I picked up the La-7 yesterday from a friend selling the plane.  The Sierra gear and cockpit kit are on the way.  I have two motors I can use, the E-Flite 160 or an AXI 5345/16.

Jeff, can youj show photos of the battery placement?

Thanks,
Kirk
