1. Prepare a 50cm plastic ruler, place it vertically, and use your FPV close to the ruler then photograph it (note: the bottom of the camera screen should be above on the 0mm of the ruler). You should check if the picture can show clearly the millimeter marks on the ruler. If it cannot, you can try to take your camera more close to the ruler and adjust its focus to gain best result; otherwise you should put your camera a little farther from the ruler. If the picture can show clearly the millimeter marks, the maximum length (use millimeter to measure it) of the ruler shown clearly on the picture will be the real definition (term: vertical resolution) of your FPV. Certainly, you also can check its horizontal resolution by this method.
(1) The equipments with definition less then 300mm are low end or "Three NOs"(product without production date, certification or manufacturer name on it), so please check again the license on your product. These products are only use for security gate, MSN video or just a toy. We found many FPV players use this kind of products, which are cheap but its definition less than 200 TV lines.
(2) The common CCD video cameras generally employ PLA or NTSC analog TV standard, the theoretical highest definition of which is 576 TV lines or 480 TV lines. PLA or NTSC analog TV is just a standard; it has no relation to the production technology and product quality. That is, even the best equipments of this standard can not be clear as 570mm.
(3) There are different kinds of products in the market. Most of the wireless video cameras are made in China. And most of European hobbyists’ OSD equipments are made in China and Taiwan. Some are high-end and good quality. Some are low-end and bad quality. Some are flattered by their resellers as 400 TV lines, or even 600 or 800 TV lines. When you meet these profiteers sell these products, you should lodge a complaint to local consumer protection authority.
(4) There are also some equipments with analog lens, which are semi-digital and take
digital circuit as its RF transmission circuit, like COFDM equipments. This kind of products is fairly high-end among common FPV equipments. They are very expensive and only used by some big agencies, seldom used by individuals. COFDM equipment can solve problems rise in transmission (for example, anti-jamming) and ensure quality signals transmission. But it has no contribution to the definition of picture. If I have not mentioned here, there are still many people haven’t known this kind of products.
2. The resolution of the digital video camera often applies index like 1280×1024, 640×480 or similar kind. You can check it from your MSN live chat video, it is maybe digital but with low resolution. The word of TV line is only used for analog CCD or COFDM equipments. For more convenient
conversion, there are also some analog equipments adopt digital equipments’ method to identify their definition, for example, 720×576 (the theoretical highest definition of PLA equipments) is equal to 400,000 pixels of digital video camera.
The operator can feel free to change the definition of real-time video of MMC-1105. It can be 1280×1024 (1.3 Mega Pixels, equal to 1280mm for the ruler) as the highest definition as HDTV. It also can be 1024×768 as the standard definition of HDTV. And it is also can be set as 640×480, which is equal to the theoretical highest definition of CCD video camera.
Many people take equipments with 640*480 or DVD as High Definition equipments. It is totally wrong.
The above is only for reference. There is a famous Chinese saying, “Is it a donkey or horsejust come out and show us for a walk around”.
Anyway, welcome your comments.
