Hi, I've been reading the post here but i was still wondering if I should join the AMA. It seems like a good thing with the insurance and everything. I'm just starting out in r/c piloting, but a "vetran" in r/c ground where we dont have all this to deal with. I want to get trained at a local club but i think i might need to be an AMA member. So if you guys could give me any info about if i should join, or what. I'm 16 so i think it would only cost around $15 with the mag. included.

thanks guys

Most clubs require that you be a member of the AMA to fly at their field, plus if you ever fly at any fly-ins those normally require AMA as well. Your best bet would be to bite the bullet and pay the money for the membership, besides, you get a new magazine every month for it. Besides, you might as well enjoy only having to pay 15 bucks for it as long as you can.

If money is the concern, you can get a membership for $1 without the mag. If the club is an AMA chartered club you will need to be an AMA member. If you are in a hurry, get the membership by phone and have AMA send an e-mail confirmation so you can show it to the club. Otherwise, it will take a couple of weeks to receive your membership. My personal opinion is the mag is worth the extra money, but, that is up to you. Go talk to the club in any case. Most clubs, but not all, will train you for free. You will probably have to become a member of the club and pay their dues.

Welcome to RC aircraft

Bury your plane into a house or car and see what happens. It's cheap insurance incase anything happens. Cars and boats can cause damage as well, but not nearly as much as a plane flying around at 80mph.

J_R has a good Idea in order to keep your cost down.

I'm sure that after you hook up with a club and get to know
some of the guys, ask them for their old magazines when
they finish with them. That way you get the reading material
too.

Before I would send in any money to anyone for anything.
Get all the details on what is required of you and how much it will
cost. THIS QUESTION APPLIES TO EVERYTHING IN LIFE,not just
in this hobby.

Ohhhhhh.......to be 16 again..............

Regards
Roby

Getting the magazine is your choice. Without it IIRC your AMA dues this year (and next?) will be $1.

The reason the ground folks don't have all this stuff that looks like monkey motion is that they only work in 2 dimensions and if they get confused, they can stop and get their head unscrambled. It is impossible to do that and still have a plane when you are in the air. The other consideration is that in the aircraft if the engine quits most folks consider that an emergency while the ground folks just walk over to their vehicle and pick it up.

Join and then join the local club. They should have a program to train you at no charge. If not, look around for other clubs. I would very strongly suggest you spend a weekend at each field that you might be able to fly at before you decide which club to join. The guys at the field tend to be significantly different from those that go to meetings and they are the ones you will interact with.

Get all the financial details from all potential clubs and stack it against your personal feelings about what you saw at the flying field before you make your decision. These folks will become almost like family once you get heavily involved.

Good luck and if you have questions, answers can be found here. Some of them will even be right.

I would also suggest spending the $1 to join. For that price ya cant beat it even the $15 isnt bad either as it does give you a lot of bang for your buck at that price. (Totally opposite huh JR ) I would wait on the mag though until you get a chance to borrow one from the club as some clubs have a library of mags and videos members can check out, and see if there is anything in it that interests you. Some people (like myself) dont feel it is worth anything while others enjoy it so its a personal decision it is mainly advertisements and district reports in my opinion and not much on stuff like construction and tips and other interesting things but again thats my opinion. But with your membership you will have acess to a flying field, a club with members that can help you out, and acess to participate in various events across the country not to mention the insurance especially at your age you dont want to have an accident and be paying for it for the rest of your life.

Unless you will always fly on private property, away from populated areas, then I would get AMA insurance. If your transmitter dies and your plane keeps flying, it could cover several miles before it goes down!
