Default Evolution .60NX with Jett Stream Muffler

Evolution .60NX w/ Cleaned up ports and minor crank deburring (stock Timing)
APC 10-8
WC 20/20 with 3 extra onces of castor
Stock Plug
15,500 close to peak (To new to really peak it since this was the second tank)
15,200 comfortably rich to allow a tank to be run through it.
Will have more numbers in the spring (Winter here in WI)!

Compared to stock porting is this an increase in performance or decrease?

I did not run the stock engine. It is now here on rcu. I do not think I lost any RPM since all I did was smooth out the ports, and clean up the crank passage. It could only help. The crank was very rough on the inside passage.

I don't know if it applies to our little engines but when I started working on drag racing V-8's in good ole American muscle cars I was told not to polish the intake runneres as the disruption in airflow helps atomize the fuel for a better burn. I saw your ad for your stock motor and you have it set at a very good price. Let's just say I'm tempted but can't justify it right now.

Allmost all of the RC Car engines have this kind of Clean up work done from the factory. The throttle responce was spectacular.

I remember being told that.†not to polish the intake runners as the disruption in airflow helps atomize the fuel for a better burn†guys even put in dimples and such , but I never believed that. Look at today’s high power monster motors, everything is polished for flow. It was what was thought at the time.LOL

Even though were talking about an engine for an airplane, much can be learned and copied from the High End Car engine manufactures and Modder’s. These are IMO the cutting edge of 2 stroke performance in the 3.5cc size. Take a look at some of these motors. Wait to be sticker shocked!! But the performance is there.

Motorman37, nice numbers with the 10/8 now if we can get a baseline and some more prop readings 10/6 10/7 11/6 11/7 11/8. I have to say this motor looks promising and with great pricing on the motor and parts, modifications by end users become more feasible. I won’t hesitate to modify this motor; parts are so inexpensive compared to other motors.

Good Job Motorman37

I also play with RC cars a little too. You nailed right on the head with the internals of the High end car engines. I will get some more numbers, but it will not be untill spring. I live in WI. It is supposed to go back sub zero in a couple days.[X(] We just had a fluke week with 32+ degree's.

I wonder what this motor would do with an 8.5cc MACs pipe and header? I bet this thing can turn a 10x9 well over 14,000.

But then again, that Jett muffler is a no brainer to tune. I'm turning an APC 10x8 about 1100-1200 RPM less with an OS 46AX and pipe. That would be a significant jump in performance.

Yea, it looks like I need to get one now!

Thanks for the post.

Motorman, do you ever touch the area of the ports where the chrome or nickel plating bond overlaps with the liner? (as in enlarging or raising the ports and sizes) I was wondering if you did that, how you went about de-burring that area to minimize the possiblility of the plating peeling.

Thank you,

Ernie Misner

Ernie,
I stay away from those edges. I allways wanted to though, but did not want to screw up the chrome.

Might work best on an engine with true chrome plating? Let us know if you give it a try!

Thanks,

Ernie

The reason for not putting a mirror polish on an intake port is so the fuel mixture will not strike it and adhere. If the port is slightly bumpy it makes for slight turbulence that keeps the fuel in suspension.
However eliminating sharp edges and unwanted bumps will give up a lot of horsepower. I do it all the time.
Ihave a ported and polished Thunder Tiger GP42 that runs awesome. Of course Ihave never seen a Thunder Tiger GP42 that didnt run good.
Ileave the inside of the liner alone but make some slight mods to the outside. Ever see an Irvine liner? has cuts in it like the RC car guy engines.
I will try to find a photo.

The Evo .60NX is a TRUE "ABC" Engine with a Chrome bore. We are not talking about a Nickel Dipped OS here.

Update

I ran a few more tanks through my Modded NX, and my friends stock NX back to back today. They both now have (3) 16 oz tanks ran through them. The fuel today was 20% again. The plug was an OS#8, after the stock plug blew right off the batt with stock muffler in the stock engine. The stock mufler ran like total crap, and the testing was terminated at the beginning of the second tank. It ran like it was way rich, and you could not lean it out, or it would sag. I killed the engine, and checked the plug, and it ws half dead. i installed a New OS8 and the Jett Mufler. The same Jett Muffler and Sundowner 50 spacer by Jett was used for both engine runs, since we are waiting for the other one in the mail yet.

Stock .60 NX w/stock muffler
APC 10-8 12,800 Peaked the RPM, but the engine acted way rich and was hot. Fried the plug.
APC 11-6 12,600 Peaked the RPM, but the engine acted way rich and was hot. Fried the plug.

Stock .60 NX w/Jett muffler The engine was instantly transformed. I said there, do you believe me now. My friend pitched the stock muffler for the dumpster.
APC 10-8 15,200 Peaked
APC 11-6 14,800 Peaked

Modded .60 NX w/Jett Muffler
APC 10-8 15,500 Peaked
APC 11-6 15,200 Peaked
MA 10-7 15,900 Peaked "Buddy ran for cover as he thought it was going to blow up (Very noisy), and I was not sure myself that it would not myself. I just did not want
to chop my arm up with shrapanel this time. I think I could of squeezed another 100 out of it, but I was not going to chance it.

The conclusion on the Modds are still a little unknown. The engine is stronger by little, but I do not know if it is worth the time to do it. Mine does seam to be a little snappier down in the low speed throttle responce area.

It is about 300 rpm stronger, than a Stock .60 NX. Same day, same Jett muffler, same 20% fuel.

What a bum rap that the supplied muffler is no good for that engine. Is it the same muffler that comes with the 46 or 52?

Thanks,

Ernie

Yep, The same muffler that they shipped with the .40, 46, and .52 also. I think it is just to small and retrictive. I was also running 20% with a 10-8. It might be ok with a 11-7, like the manual recommends and states that it turns that at 13,500. From my experiences with the engine now, I would either run a Jett, Tuned Pipe, or a Tower .46 muffler minimum. I ran the stock muffler to get some numbers for you guys, but also to show my buddy how much of a difference the Jett muffler was going to make. It might work with an 11-7, but I was running an 10-8. To some guys it may be fine, but to me, I thought it really sucked. I am also compairing it to the Jett muffler though.

I think the muffler was an after thought, as in "It comes with a muffler".[X(] I think most people who run this engine will be running tuned exhaust systems anyhow. The engine is marketed to utilize them in both there advertising and in the manual. I wish they would just market the engine without the muffler, since it wasn't worth the time to install it.

Man, that prop will be all kinds of noisy! It rips pretty loudly on my OS 46AX/pipe setup. Maybe a 12x4 or 12x4W

I couldn't stand it and bought one today after my Jett Stream muffler came in. I put 30oz of Ritch's Brew 10% (20% oil 5c/15s) through it letting it bubble along at 13,000 (just below where it hops on the pipe) and then did a couple of quick runs. 84 degrees here:

EVO 60NX with Jett Stream muffler:

APC 10x8 > 15,200 to 15,300
APC 9x10 > 15,700-15,800 with a pinch to 16,050[:-]

Man...... I'm sportin' wood!
