Found this pic while searching for photos of my favorite high performance experimental, the Glasair lll.. This particular example with a turbine engine conversion, is the sharpest plane I have ever seen setting on the ramp!

Is the nose (front half) of that plane pointing up or is that an optical delusion?

The reason I asked was because I built a model of the original Glasair from a 3 view and wing plans from Stoddard Hamilton.
Maybe I could use part of my plans and extend the nose on a new version of the model.....That's why I cares...Ron
And, yes, it is HOT!

I would say it's an "optical delusion" sebo. I can't imagine the airplane has up thrust. I think it's a combination of the angle of the photo and the fact that the airplane sits with some positive AOA on the ground due to the long nose wheel strut. Probably has to to have that for prop clearance! Definitely a wicked looking machine.

Sebo,
Tell us about your experiences with building the Glasair lll. How long did the building process take? Impressions about it's flight characteristics? There are quite a few used 3s on the market. My goal is to someday own one of these beautiful aircraft!

Randy,
Mine wasn't the Glasair III. It was the original.
It took me almost a year. I had to draw the plans and then go from there. I had to create a canopy, cowl and wheel pants from scratch also.
This was a design and build from scratch aircraft. I did a build article for Model Airplane News many years ago.
I like the way it flies. It has an undercambered wing and wants to float on landing.
Maybe the models you are refering to don't have those kind of wings. I used the plans from the real plane...had to scale them down. That was a real job too.
I would recommend one of the used 3's if they aren't too expensive. They aren't an acrobatic plane. Just pretty much fly in circles and do touch and goes.
Where can I find one of these used models?
I still have mine and it flies great. Did drop a wing on a stall one time and had to repair the wing. That was a long time ago.
Still have the plane and it is flyable.
Ron

Sebo;  I don't know if you guys are still around flying the Glasair, but I've got to correct one thing.  The full scale was truely an acrobatic plane.  I built three full size, from the TD I to the model III which was pressureized and twin turboed. I didn't quite finish this one as the owner stoped paying my wages.   At the airshow in Arlington, the III climbed straight vertical and did a tail slide with full smoke.  The G rating on the TDI which I built and owned and flew for 300 hours was 9g's. It would do anything you  wanted depending on the engine size of course.

This could of been different in the scale down models, but if they were a true copy with the wing design, aerobatics would not be an issue.  My TDI approach was 70 mph, and stalled at 56 mph with full flaps.  The model II and III  had a larger rudder and a little longer fusealarge with a fuller canopy and had much better characteristics.

After one year, I modified the LG to a tri-gear.  The engine was a 150hp with a fix pitch and I constantly could cruise at 200mph at altitude.  A good pilot could make this plane do anything that he wanted.  I lost mine in a takeoff crash when the canopy opened at about 500 feet.  We servived but with some major injuries.

Just thought I throw this is for kicks and giggles.  I wold buy a III anyday, but it would really have to be inspected with a fine tooth comb  as some builders didn't have much expierence with glass and most of the wing inards and not exposed.

Happy Flying

Ron

My model still exists and is flyable. I built this plane when the Glassair first was introduced to the market. It doesn't have the rounded and graceful lines that the scale plane does but it does fly nice....haven't tried anything but rolls and loops. Afraid to try to put it into a spin for fear of losing it.

My full size kit was # 97 off the line.  It was pretty basic with lots of metal work.  Cost me $7500 for the complete kit.  A couple of years later they supplied all the meal work complete and punched out.  What a difference.  Glad your still flying you model.  It must of been hard to copy from the plans and transer all that to a smaller size.  What did you end up with on the wing size etc.?  What engine did you put in it and the wgt.?  If I knew how to post pics on this site, I'd send you mine sitting at Oshkosh in 1984.  It started out as a TD, then I converted it to a tri-gear after I wipes out the landing gear.  It was a terrible design.  Going down the runway, if I made to many small corrections, the gear would start to spread out further and further.  then I got into some soft sand and all hell broke lose.  Towed it home on a trailer and did the conversion.  No more gear problems.  I hope to fly it next spring if I can get enough stick time.  I'm going to put in a DLE 20 with smoke.  This ARF is the better version of the TD, it's got the wing extensions and longer fuse and bigger rudder.  So I'm keeping my fingers crossed.  When I get started[, I'll try to post on the progress.

Regards,

Ron
