I'm looking for a remarkable pilot....

1. His first flight is reputed to be being stunted by Ernst Udet in a Bucker Jungmann. (To clarify, he was stunted by Udet, just not convinced it was his first flight.)
2. His last 'flight', to date, was in a F35 simulator.
3. In between he achieved a feat that will never be surpassed.
4. In 1938 he saw the demonstration of the Focke-Wulf Fw 61 helicopter flown by Hanna Reitsch inside the Deutschlandhalle. He subsequently met and got to know Reitsch.

Correct of course Makmov and you are up.

A few notes on Eric Melrose Brown

1. His first flight is reputed to be being stunted by Ernst Udet in a Bucker Jungmann. (To clarify, he was stunted by Udet, I'm just not convinced it was his first flight.) Brown son of an RFC pilot and fluent in German got to know Udet and other Luftwaffe pilots in the 1930's. He was in Germany at the outbreak of war, fortunately near the Swiss border and was escorted there by the SS.
2. His last 'flight', to date, was in a F35 simulator. See his interview here: http://www.key.aero/view_feature.asp?ID=7&thisSection=historic
3. In between he achieved a feat that will never be surpassed. He flew 487 different aircraft not counting variants (a full list can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_aircraft_flown_by_Eric_%22Winkle%22_Brown. he also achieved the feat of 2,407 carrier landings!
4. In 1938 he saw the demonstration of the Focke-Wulf Fw 61 helicopter flown by Hanna Reitsch inside the Deutschlandhalle. He subsequently met and got to know Reitsch.
5. In his earliest operations he shot down two four engined aircraft, which he was subsequently decorated for, before his squadron was disbanded following a torpedo attack. He shot down two FW 200 Condors flying Martlets from HMS Audacity before it was sunk by a U boat. Only two of the pilots survived the sinking.
6. He was one of the few pilots to fly the Arado Ar 234 Blitz bomber. as commander of the 'Enemy Test Flight' he also flew the the ME 262 and 163
7. Towards the end of the war he assisted in the interrogation of the Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp Commandant and his assistant. (Josef Kramer and Irma Grese) he started ""Two more loathsome creatures it is hard to imagine" and described the latter as "The worst human being I have ever met". He also interviewed Wernher von Braun, Hermann Göring, Willy Messerschmitt, Dr. Ernst Heinkel., Kurt Tank and top Luftwaffe fighter ace, Erich Hartmann.

Some other notable achievements....

He was key in developing RN carrier operations, he was the first to land jet on an aircraft carrier and promoted the steam catapult and use of the angled flight deck.
As a test pilot with RAE Aerodynamics Flight he made major contributions to the understanding of compressibility, leading to his involvement with the UK supersonic programme,

A quote on the P-51 Mustang "The Mustang was a good fighter and the best escort due to its incredible range, make no mistake about it. It was also the best American dogfighter. But the laminar flow wing fitted to the Mustang could be a little tricky. It could not by any means out-turn a Spitfire. No way. It had a good rate-of-roll, better than the Spitfire, so I would say the plusses to the Spitfire and the Mustang just about equate. If I were in a dogfight, I’d prefer to be flying the Spitfire. The problem was I wouldn’t like to be in a dogfight near Berlin, because I could never get home to Britain in a Spitfire!"

One of the most amazing characters in a time when it seemed commonplace.

Over to you Makmov!

Okay, keeping with the Pilot theme.

Name the Pilots

1. shares a distiction with only each other.
2. Both flew together initially.
3. Niether saw the end of WWII.
4. Both were awarded the highest title of their country, however they were from the same country the title actually was different from each other when each had recived their award, which had to do with the timming of the award being giving out.

There had been a book and movie that feature one them; however, neither actually belonged to the group from which the title of the film or book were taken from. And, it is a common error that they were mistaken for being part of such said group, which was an enemy nickname for the group.

They were both free agent fighters, a privilege only bestowed on the most aggressive pilots.

As a free agent they were not sent out on specific sorties but were allowed to roam the skies for any targets that could be found.

Are these perhaps French pilots? Thanks; Ernie P.

The Normandie-Niemen Regiment (Russian: Нормандия-Неман) was a fighter squadron, later regiment (of three squadrons) of the French Air Force. It served on the Eastern Front of the European Theatre of World War II with the 1st Air Army. The regiment is notable for being one of only two air combat units from an Allied western European country to participate on the Eastern Front during World War II, the other being the British No. 151 Wing RAF,[1] and the only one to fight along the Soviets till the end of the war in Europe.
The unit originated in mid-1943 during World War II. Initially the groupe comprised a group of French fighter pilots sent to aid Soviet forces on the Eastern Front at the suggestion of Charles de Gaulle, leader of the Free French Forces, who felt it important that French servicemen serve on all fronts in the war.
The unit was the GC3 (Groupe de Chasse 3 or 3rd Fighter Group) in the Free French Air Force, first commanded by Jean Tulasne. It fought in three campaigns on behalf of the Soviet Union between 22 March 1943, and 9 May 1945, during which time it destroyed 273 enemy aircraft and received numerous orders, citations and decorations from both France and the Soviet Union, including the French Légion d’Honneur and the Soviet Order of the Red Banner. Joseph Stalin awarded the unit the name Niemen for its participation in the Battle of the Niemen River (1944).

Yak -1s at first but I am pretty sure the ended up in 3s.

ah, maybe your are right I have several sources say just Yak 1s and another souce that said they at least flew Yak-3s at some point.

To behonest hardcore information is murky at best, so maybe I have incorrect information. They were as horrible about keeping records as the Germans were good about it.

The first was downed in a Yak-1 in an 8:1 battle with Bf 109s, who also had a first ever score...

I knew if anyone would figure it out you would Ernie

Yes, the only two female aces of WWII.

Lily was the first female fighter pilot to score a victory.

Katya as she was known was awarded,  October 1 1993 with the title Hero of the Russian Federation.

Lily as she was known was awarded May 6 1990 with the title Hero of the Soviet Union.

Often mistaken for the Night Witches, which was actually a female bomber group that the Germans nicknamed the Night Witches.

A little background info I dug up last evening. Thanks; Ernie P.

Lydia Vladimirovna Litvyak, (Лидия Владимировна Литвяк, (Moscow, August 18, 1921 – Krasnyi Luch [1] August 1, 1943), also known as Lydia Litviak or Lilya Litviak, was a female fighter pilot in the Soviet Air Force during World War II. With 12 solo victories [2][3] (but some authors say 11 [4] or even 13 [5][6]) and either two [7], or four,[8] shared gained in 66 combat missions,[5] she is one of the world's only two female fighter aces, along with Katya Budanova.

Yekaterina Vasylievna Budanova (Cyrillic: Екатерина Васильевна Буданова), also known as Katya Budanova (Катя Буданова), (6 [2] December 1916 – 19 July 1943), was a female fighter pilot in the Soviet Air Force during World War II. With 11 air victories [3], she was one of the world's two female fighter aces along with Lydia Litvyak.

Actually, I totally missed them at first. The clue mentioning Stalingrad reminded me. When I checked the other clues, they all fit. Sometimes, that old tree/forest thing is true. A very good question, makmov. Thanks; Ernie P.
