First part is right...but it was for the XB-48...it was a Martin product that also had tandem gear...that's what the mod. B-26 was testing. (not for the B-47 which was a Boeing product )

Actually, the data from the "Middle River Stump Jumper" tests was also used by the Boeing Company for the B-47 as well as Martin's XB-48

Is it diesel in the crankcase to thin the oil in the cold so that the engine would start?  Erich Hartmann said that a captured Soviet soldier showed them the trick.  I can't find my reference though.

In addition to using diesel fuel mixed in the crankcase (as Brian has already said) they would pour whatever fuel they had handy (usually diesel) on the ground, under the engine. They would then set the fuel on fire, to heat the engine and oil, so they could get the plane started. Ever so often, they would lose a plane to fire; but they kept flying when the Germans couldn't get their engines to turn over. A few less planes in the air is a lot better than all the planes on the ground. Thanks; Ernie P.

Ah... as in "Ernie and Deat; what are your questions"? Okay; that makes sense. Since you already asked your question, we'll let you go first. The Bf 109 beat out the Heinkel He 112, by the way. The Focke Wulf and Arado entries weren't even in the running. The He 112 was sold to Russia in some numbers; but was never a mainstay Luftwaffe plane. Thanks; Ernie P.

I guess I'm up then. What aircraft company designed the turn and fold retractable landing gear that was used in the P-36 -P-40 series and follow on warbirds? And what was unique about the company that designed it?

Boeing held the patent for the gear. Curtis had to "pay" boeing for the rights to use it.

As for what Unique about Boeing? I could probably come up with 100 different answers to that one.
