Martin B-26 equipped with a tandem landing gear that was used on the B-47

First part is right...but it was for the XB-48...it was a Martin product that also had tandem gear...that's what the mod. B-26 was testing. (not for the B-47 which was a Boeing product )

Actually, the data from the "Middle River Stump Jumper" tests was also used by the Boeing Company for the B-47 as well as Martin's XB-48

Is it diesel in the crankcase to thin the oil in the cold so that the engine would start?  Erich Hartmann said that a captured Soviet soldier showed them the trick.  I can't find my reference though.

In addition to using diesel fuel mixed in the crankcase (as Brian has already said) they would pour whatever fuel they had handy (usually diesel) on the ground, under the engine. They would then set the fuel on fire, to heat the engine and oil, so they could get the plane started. Ever so often, they would lose a plane to fire; but they kept flying when the Germans couldn't get their engines to turn over. A few less planes in the air is a lot better than all the planes on the ground. Thanks; Ernie P.

800mZero -> RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz (1/31/2010 6:41 PM)

wow a collection of good answers! The russians were also famous for using oils derived from animals such as reindeer, they wood not freeze like a traditional motor oil!

Ernie, Deat your questions!

G-Pete -> RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz (1/31/2010 8:00 PM)

Here the stats so far, warbird 51 is now up with asking the question.
Please Gentleman read the rules - you cannot ask a question without "winning" that. The guy who ask the question decided (and post) the next up.

Very interesting to follow that thread - good job Guys! We losing pounds here with all that brain jogging. [:D]

Here you go.  What plane lost the initial competition against the Bf 109 as the next Luftwaffe fighter?

Ah... as in "Ernie and Deat; what are your questions"? Okay; that makes sense. Since you already asked your question, we'll let you go first. The Bf 109 beat out the Heinkel He 112, by the way. The Focke Wulf and Arado entries weren't even in the running. The He 112 was sold to Russia in some numbers; but was never a mainstay Luftwaffe plane. Thanks; Ernie P.

deatonbt -> RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz (1/31/2010 9:16 PM)

You got it.  The He-112 is correct.  I was wondering if someone was going to say He-100 since it was better known.

OK..my 3rd and final question:
What was the "Middle River Stump Jumper" and what made it different? (why did it have that name? )

800mZero did not qualify to ask the question - -therefore all posts afterwards relying on that question is fruit fro the poisoned tree

To be correct and fair proptop should name the winner according to the rules. I strongly assume warbird51 is the next, but only proptop can decide that. When he is not satisfied with the answer of warbird51 - the question is still open until proptop name the winner.

Sorry !!

warbird51 -> RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz (2/1/2010 3:39 AM)

I guess I'm up then. What aircraft company designed the turn and fold retractable landing gear that was used in the P-36 -P-40 series and follow on warbirds? And what was unique about the company that designed it?

wingspar -> RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz (2/1/2010 4:36 AM)

Boeing held the patent for the gear. Curtis had to "pay" boeing for the rights to use it.

As for what Unique about Boeing? I could probably come up with 100 different answers to that one.

This is a flash suppressor for a M2 Browning Heavy Machine Gun, and NOT used on aircraft.

I beg to differ with your reply G-Pete
The item you have shown in the first question is for a .50 Cal M2 Machine gun.
