G-Pete -> Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz (1/27/2010 10:03 PM)

Alright guys, over the winter this forum became a little dry and some of the posts heated.

Time for some fun and knowledge.

How it works:

First question – How many blades had an F6F-5 Hellcat Propeller (for an example) – Then it’s your turn to answer. Then who ever asked the question name the next guy who asks the next question – and so forth.

Rules:
Only warbird related questions model or full scale.
Two part questions are allowed.
The time limit between announced winner and your question is 24hrs

Rule change Feb 26 2010

Alright here is my question:
Question #1
What is that and for what is it for?

c550 -> RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz (1/27/2010 11:38 PM)

It looks like a vacuum generator for vacuum powered flight instruments. Just my guess.

G-Pete -> RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz (1/27/2010 11:49 PM)

Sorry nope

RCGuy41 -> RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz (1/28/2010 12:23 AM)

G-Pete,

It's a Flash surpressor for either a machine gun or cannon. Primarily used on night fighters, RAF Lanc gunners had them on their browning 303 machine guns to prevent blindness when firing the guns.

jmohn -> RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz (1/28/2010 12:24 AM)

Is it from a planes engine or fueling system?

Scotsman -> RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz (1/28/2010 12:25 AM)

It's a blast tube for the nose of a P-38M night fighter.

Canuck1 -> RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz (1/28/2010 1:28 AM)

Its a flash supressor for a .50 Cal Machine gun

Alright Bradley - you are the first with the right answer - this one fits 303, .30 and the .50 cal. The 20mm had larger ones.
We looking forward to your question...

RCGuy41 -> RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz (1/28/2010 6:59 PM)

G-Pete,

Thanks, I have a good one.

1. Name this engine
2. Name an aircraft that had this engine installed in

wingspar -> RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz (1/28/2010 7:31 PM)

Looks to be an Allison V-1710 used in such airplanes as the P-38, P-40 and others

Dave

RCGuy41 -> RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz (1/28/2010 7:39 PM)

Dave,

You are correct on both counts, the other aircraft were the P-51A and P-39. You get to ask the next question.

at-6 texan -> RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz (1/28/2010 7:53 PM)

THIS IS AN Allison V-1710-89/91 TO 12 cz. for P-38 P-39 P-40 AND P-63K

wingspar -> RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz (1/28/2010 8:12 PM)

Name this engine and at least one aircraft it powered.

Hint: it wasn't a P-51

RCGuy41 -> RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz (1/28/2010 8:46 PM)

Dave,

You gave away the engine, it's a BMW-801 which went into the best German fighter the FW-190. The engine also went into different junkers aircraft to include Messerschmitt, Dornier, and Heinkle aircraft.

wingspar -> RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz (1/28/2010 8:59 PM)

Good one Brad, your next.

Dave

RCGuy41 -> RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz (1/28/2010 9:18 PM)

O.K.,

I have an RC question; During WWII what was the largest radio controlled aircraft?

Stuka Jon N -> RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz (1/28/2010 9:38 PM)

Boeing B-17 Stuka Jon

RCGuy41 -> RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz (1/28/2010 10:00 PM)

Jon,

Take the bull by the horns, your answer is correct; please sir, the next question is yours.

Stuka Jon N -> RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz (1/28/2010 10:53 PM)

What member from a famous family was killed arming a radio controled B-17 during WWII

ampeater -> RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz (1/28/2010 11:06 PM)

Joe Kennedy

jeffEE -> RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz (1/29/2010 12:16 AM)

I always thought it was an RC B-24 he was killed in. I guess I will have to up-date my brain on that one.

Stuka Jon N -> RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz (1/29/2010 1:11 AM)
